Terminology

The following terms are used throughout the manual and are standard terminology among detectorists:

  • ELIMINATION: When the detector does not emit a tone or display a Target-ID for a metal object passing through the searchcoil's detection field.
  • DISCRIMINATION: When the detector emits different tones for different types of metals, or "eliminates" certain metals. This feature allows the user to ignore undesirable objects.
  • RELIC: An object of interest due to its age or association with the past. Relics can be made of iron, bronze, or precious metals.
  • IRON: A common, low-grade metal often considered an undesirable target. Examples include old cans, pipes, bolts, and nails. However, some desired targets like property markers can contain iron.
  • FERROUS: Metals made of, or containing, iron.
  • PINPOINTING: The process of finding the exact location of a buried object.
  • V.C.O. (Voltage Controlled Oscillator): An audio method where both audio pitch and volume rise with signal strength, improving the user's ability to interpret target size and depth.
  • GROUND BALANCE: The detector's ability to ignore the earth's naturally occurring minerals, sounding a tone only when a metal object is detected. This detector has proprietary circuitry to eliminate false signals from severe ground conditions.

Pre-Assembly

Unpack your detector to find the following contents:

  • 1. Control Housing: The main unit with the display and controls.
  • 2. Armrest Assembly with Screw and Lock-Nut: For securing the detector to the user's arm.
  • 3. Searchcoil: The primary detection component.
  • 4. Middle Stem: Connects the control housing to the lower stem.
  • 5. Lower Stem with Bolt & Knurled Knob: Connects the middle stem to the searchcoil and allows length adjustment.
  • 6. S-Rod with 2 Screws: The main shaft structure.

Tool Required: #1 Phillips Screwdriver

Assembly Steps:

  1. Remove the screw from the Armrest.
  2. Slide the Armrest over the end of the S-Rod.
  3. Attach the Armrest with the Screw and Lock-Nut.
  4. Attach the Control Housing to the S-Rod using two screws (install the back screw first). Note: The Hand-grip fits under the Control Housing; peel back the Hand-grip to expose the front hole for attachment.

Assembly

Caution: Forcing the Middle Stem with the Cam Lock raised may create a burr on the camlock. If this occurs, remove the burr with a knife to allow insertion.

  1. Position the S-Rod upright.
  2. Rotate the LOCKING COLLAR fully in the counterclockwise direction (unlock).
  3. Ensure the INTERNAL CAM LOCK is flush with the inside of the tube.
  4. Insert the MIDDLE STEM into the S-ROD, with the SILVER BUTTON pointed upward.
  5. Rotate the MIDDLE STEM until the SILVER BUTTON locates in the hole.
  6. Twist the LOCKING COLLAR fully in the clockwise direction until it locks.
  7. Repeat steps 2-6 on the LOWER STEM.
  8. Using the BOLT and KNURLED KNOB, attach the SEARCHCOIL to the LOWER STEM.
  9. Adjust the LOWER STEM to a length that allows a comfortable upright posture with your arm relaxed and the SEARCHCOIL parallel to the ground.
  10. Wind the CABLE securely around the STEMS, leaving slack at the bottom.
  11. Connect the CABLE PLUG to the housing. Do not twist the cable or plug; turn the Locking Ring only. Use minimal finger pressure to start threads and avoid cross-threading. Ensure the Locking Ring is fully engaged and tight.
  12. Tighten both LOCKING COLLARS.

Note: An optional Extended Lower Stem (TUBE5X) is available for taller users.

Batteries

The detector requires a single 9-volt ALKALINE battery (not included). Do not use ordinary Zinc Carbon or "Heavy Duty" batteries. Rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride batteries are recommended if using rechargeable types.

The battery compartment is located on the back side of the housing. Slide the battery door to the side to open it. Push down firmly on the bottom of the battery for easy removal.

Battery Life:

  • 9-volt alkaline battery: 20 to 25 hours.
  • Rechargeable batteries: approximately 8 hours per charge.

Battery Indicator:

The battery icon on the display has three vertical segments and an outline segment. The number of illuminated segments indicates voltage:

  • 3 segments: 8.1 volts or more
  • 2 segments: 7.1 to 8.0 volts
  • 1 segment: 6.5 to 7.0 volts
  • No segments: 6.2 to 6.4 volts
  • Outline Flashing: 6.1 volts or less

Speaker volume may decrease as battery voltage drops. Low speaker volume is apparent when the outline flashes.

Battery Disposal & Recycling:

Alkaline batteries can be disposed of in normal waste or recycled. Non-alkaline batteries should be recycled. California requires all battery types to be recycled. Refer to local municipalities for specific requirements.

Armrest Strap (Optional Accessory):

An optional arm strap is available to help secure the detector against the arm during vigorous swinging. The detector can be used without the strap without compromising balance or stability.

Quick-Start Demonstration

This demonstration helps you understand the detector's basic functions.

I. Supplies Needed:

  • A Nail
  • A Gold Ring (try several sizes)
  • A Large Silver Coin

II. Position the Detector:

  • Place the detector on a table with the searchcoil hanging over the edge, or have a friend hold it off the ground.
  • Keep the searchcoil away from walls, floors, and metal objects.
  • Remove personal metal jewelry (watches, rings).
  • Turn off nearby lights or appliances that emit electromagnetic interference.
  • Pivot the searchcoil back.

III. Power Up:

Press the [POWER ON/OFF] button.

IV. Wave each object over the searchcoil:

Notice the tones and Target-IDs for each object (assumes default DISC setting):

OBJECTTARGET-IDTONE
Naillower (e.g., 10-35)LOW
Gold Ringmedium (e.g., Mid 50's)V.C.O.
Larger Gold Ringmedium (higher than ID for smaller gold ring)V.C.O.
Silver Coinhigher (e.g., 80-99)High

Note: Motion is required for detection. Sweep objects flat over the searchcoil, parallel to its plane.

V. Press [MENU] twice to activate the DISC selection:

  • While sweeping the Nail back-and-forth, press the [+] button to increase the DISC setting.
  • Continue pressing [+] to increase the DISC setting.
  • Observe that the Nail will be eliminated from detection at a certain DISC setting (typically when the setting is 40 numbers greater than the target's ID). When the Nail is eliminated, the IRON segment will flash, but no tone or Target-ID will be indicated.

Caution: Passing the nail at different angles may yield different ID numbers.

VI. Repeat Step V while waving the Gold Ring and Silver Coin:

  • Notice that the Gold Ring may be eliminated.
  • If the Silver Coin's ID is greater than 80, it will not be eliminated. If its ID is less than 80, the tone will change from V.C.O. to High Tone as DISC is adjusted.

  • Hold a metal object motionless over the searchcoil.
  • Notice that motion is not required for detection in Pinpoint Mode.
  • Move the object closer, then farther away from the searchcoil.
  • Observe the changing sound and depth values.

The Basics of Metal Detecting

This metal detector is designed to locate buried metal objects, addressing common challenges:

  1. Ignoring signals from ground minerals.
  2. Ignoring signals from unwanted metal objects like nails.
  3. Identifying buried metal objects before digging.
  4. Estimating object size and depth to facilitate digging.
  5. Eliminating electromagnetic interference (EMI) from other electronic devices.

1. Ground Minerals:

Soils contain minerals that can interfere with metal signals. The Eurotek Pro has a preset ground elimination setting, requiring no user adjustments.

2. Trash:

For coin hunting, you may want to ignore items like aluminum foil and nails. The Target-ID and sounds help decide what to dig. The DISCRIMINATION feature allows elimination of unwanted metals.

3. Identifying Buried Objects:

Objects are identified by a 2-digit Target-ID on the display (scale of 1-99). Higher numbers indicate more conductive targets (e.g., silver coins), while lower numbers indicate less conductive targets (e.g., iron).

4. Size and Depth of Buried Objects:

A 5-digit bar graph indicates relative depth. More bars mean a deeper object. A more accurate depth reading is available in Pinpoint Mode, which does not require searchcoil motion.

5. EMI (Electromagnetic Interference):

The searchcoil's magnetic field can be affected by electromagnetic energy from sources like cell phones, power lines, and microwaves, causing erratic beeping. The SENSITIVITY control can reduce susceptibility to EMI. If erratic behavior occurs, reduce sensitivity.

Headphone Jack:

A 1/4" headphone jack is available. When headphones are connected, the speaker volume is disabled. Use stereo headphones with a 1/4" plug.

Using Headphones:

Headphones improve detection of weak signals, extend battery life, and allow clearer hearing of subtle sound changes, especially in noisy environments. For safety, do not use headphones near traffic or other dangers. Use cables shorter than three meters.

Operation and Controls

Powering Up:

Press the [POWER ON/OFF] button. The detector powers on. A "[Discrimination Mode Indicator]" (d) appears momentarily, indicating Discrimination Mode. Motion is required for target detection. Default sensitivity is 7 (scale 1-10), and default volume is 7 (70% of maximum).

How to Work the Controls:

The control panel features:

  • [POWER ON/OFF] Button: Powers the unit on/off.
  • [MENU] Button: Press to select menu items (SENS, DISC, VOL) for adjustment.
  • [PIN POINT] Button: Press and hold to activate Pinpoint Mode.
  • [+] / [-] Buttons: Adjust settings for the active menu item. The active item is highlighted on the display.

Discrimination System

Target Detection:

Sweep the searchcoil back-and-forth over the ground, keeping it parallel to the ground. Searchcoil motion is required for target detection (except in Pinpoint Mode).

Target-ID:

When objects are detected, a sound is emitted and a 2-digit Target-ID (1-99) appears on the screen, indicating electrical conductivity. Higher numbers mean more conductive targets. The display shows the Target-ID of the last detected object. The Eurotek Pro offers fast response, allowing detection of closely spaced objects, though the displayed Target-ID may change rapidly. The Target-ID times out and disappears 3 seconds after the last detection.

Examples of coins and their typical Target-IDs are shown on page 14.

3-Tone System:

The detector uses three tones based on Target-ID and DISC setting:

  • No sound: Metals eliminated from detection (DISC function).
  • Low Tone: Targets with an ID less than 40.
  • V.C.O. (variable pitch and volume): Targets with an ID between 40 and 69, or targets between 70-79 when DISC setting is greater than or equal to the Target-ID.
  • High Tone: Targets with an ID of 80 or greater, or targets between 70-79 when DISC setting is less than the Target-ID.

The tone can vary depending on the programmed DISC setting.

Discrimination and V-Break™™:

The DISC control eliminates targets with IDs less than or equal to the set value (up to 69). For DISC settings above 69, targets are not eliminated but their tone changes to V.C.O. This range acts as the V-Break™™ (Variable Tone Breakpoint). The highest DISC setting is 79.

Illustration Description: A graph shows Target IDs from 0 to 99. With DISC=0, all IDs produce sound (Low Tone, V.C.O., High Tone). As DISC increases, sections are eliminated (NO TONE). For DISC settings above 69, the range shifts from High Tone to V.C.O. For example, with DISC=79, IDs 1-69 are NO TONE, 70-79 are V.C.O., and 80+ are HIGH TONE.

The Target-ID and Audio-ID systems operate independently. A deeply buried target might produce a low tone but have a signal too weak for a visual Target-ID.

Depth Indicator

In Discrimination Mode, a Bar Graph illuminates with the Target-ID, representing the distance from the searchcoil. More bars indicate a deeper object; fewer bars indicate a shallower object. The scale is calibrated for coin-sized objects at maximum sensitivity:

  • 5 Bars: Deeply buried coin, or a large, very deeply buried object.
  • 1 Bar: Shallow coin, or a large object more deeply buried.

Mode Selections

Iron Identification:

The Eurotek Pro classifies ferrous objects by size and signal strength, with Target-IDs between 1 and 39. To eliminate all ferrous objects, set DISC = 39. You can also selectively eliminate objects with IDs less than a chosen value (e.g., set DISC to 14 to eliminate IDs less than 15).

FeTone™™, Adjustable Iron Audio: Volume settings 10-20 adjust the volume response for ferrous metals.

Iron-Indicator: The IRON icon flashes when ferrous objects are present, independent of the discrimination setting. This indicator is useful for relic hunters, alerting them to iron even if it's discriminated out.

Pinpoint Mode:

Press-and-hold the [PIN POINT] button to enter no-motion Pinpoint Mode. "[Pinpoint Mode Indicator]" (PP) is displayed. In this mode:

  • No searchcoil motion is required.
  • Any metal object induces an audible hum.
  • Target-ID and Discrimination are not possible; all targets are detected regardless of DISC setting.
  • Audio feedback is V.C.O.
  • Target depth is displayed.

Pinpoint Mode is used to precisely locate detected objects or trace the outline of larger objects.

Pinpoint Depth Indicator:

While [PIN POINT] is held, a 2-digit number shows target depth (calibrated for coins). Maximum depth reading is 25cm or 9 inches. This can be affected by electrical noise or weak signals.

Pinpoint Retuning:

To retune, quickly release and immediately re-press the [PIN POINT] button. "[Retuning Indicator]" (E) indicates the detector is retuning to the incoming signal level.

How to Pinpoint:

Position the searchcoil 2-5 cm (1"-2") above and to the side of the target. Press and hold [PIN POINT] and slowly sweep the searchcoil across the target. The sound indicates the target's location. Sweeping side-to-side and listening for the loudest sound helps pinpoint the center. A loud sound over a wide area indicates a large object.

Narrow It Down:

To further narrow the detection field, position the searchcoil near the center of the response, release [PIN POINT], and quickly press-and-hold it again. A response will only occur when the searchcoil is directly over the target. Repeat to further narrow the zone.

Consider Purchasing a Pinpointer:

A handheld pinpointer is a useful tool for precisely locating unearthed objects, reducing digging time and hole size. Teknetics offers a robust and inexpensive pinpointer.

Other Features

Overload Warning:

If a metal object or highly magnetic soil is too close to the searchcoil, the detector will "overload." An overload indicator will appear on the screen, accompanied by a rapid, repeating mid-tone warning sound. The detector will not function under overload conditions, but it will not be harmed. Raise the searchcoil or move to a different location.

Unit of Measure (U/M):

The depth indicator in Pinpoint Mode can display centimeters (CM) or inches (IN). The default is CM.

To change U/M:

  1. Turn the detector OFF.
  2. Press-and-hold [PIN POINT].
  3. Press [MENU].
  4. Continue holding [PIN POINT].
  5. Quickly release and re-press-and-hold [PIN POINT] to toggle between CM and IN.
  6. Release [PIN POINT] when the desired U/M appears. The setting is saved.

Memory:

To store current settings (SENS, DISC, VOL):

  1. Turn the detector ON.
  2. Select desired settings.
  3. Press-and-hold [MENU] for 8 seconds.
  4. Release [MENU] when the three menu selections appear at the bottom of the screen.

The detector will resume operation with programmed settings upon power-up.

Reset:

To return all settings to factory defaults:

  1. Turn the detector OFF.
  2. Press-and-hold [MENU].
  3. Press [POWER ON/OFF].
  4. Release [MENU].

The 2-digit number displayed after reset is the software revision number.
