Condair RS II Steam Humidifier Installation Manual

Installation Overview

This section provides a general overview of the installation requirements for the Condair RS II steam humidifier. It details the placement of sensors, ductwork connections, and steam line routing.

Diagram Description: The diagram illustrates the setup involving a return duct and a supply duct. It shows the placement of a 'Humidity sensor or humidity controller' in both ducts, and a 'High limit humidistat (external safety loop)' connected to the supply duct. Pressure specifications are noted: Pmax 6.03" wc (1500 Pa) and Pmin -4.02" wc (-1000 Pa). The diagram also indicates the required 'Calculated absorption distance B' to any obstruction, or minimum distances if B1 is unknown. The steam line routing is shown with requirements for it to be 'As short as possible', with 'Adequate upslope (min. 10°) / downslope (2.0°)', 'No restrictions', and a 'Condensate trap at the lowest point'.

Steam Installation

This section details the proper installation procedures for steam and condensate lines to ensure optimal performance and safety.

Installation Notes:

  • Use original Condair steam and condensate hoses or approved copper (MED-L) or stainless steel (min. AISI 304) pipes. Other materials may cause malfunctions. Do not use copper steam lines with reverse osmosis or de-ionized water supply.
  • Initially, route the steam line upright for at least 12" (300 mm) above the humidifier. Then, maintain a minimum upslope of 10° and/or a minimum downslope of 2° towards the steam distributor.
  • The condensate hose from the steam distributor should lead down to the humidifier with a minimum downslope of 1.2°, via a condensate trap (min. hose bend diameter Ø8" (Ø200 mm)), and connect to the unit's top connector.
  • Important: Fill the condensate trap with water before operating the unit.
  • Keep the steam line as short as possible, adhering to minimum bend radii: 12" (300 mm) for steam hoses or 5x internal diameter for solid pipes. Account for pressure loss from elbows.
  • Note that steam hose length can change with temperature and age.
  • Secure steam hoses to the steam distributor and humidifier steam outlet with hose clamps. Connect solid steam pipes with short steam hoses and clamps.
  • Caution: Do not overtighten hose clamps on the steam humidifier connector.
  • Install condensate drain (full size T) at the lowest point, ensuring proper slope for steam lines upstream and downstream of the T.
  • Steam lines made of solid pipes must be insulated to minimize condensate formation, which reduces efficiency and moisture supply.
  • Avoid reducing the steam line's cross-section, as this can cause excessive pressure increases and scalding risks. Ensure the steam line remains open throughout its length.
  • Steam hoses must not sag to prevent condensate accumulation. Valves in steam lines are not permitted.

Diagram Description: Diagrams show various steam line and condensate line routing configurations, emphasizing minimum clearances (e.g., min. 12" (300 mm)), bend radii (Rmin. 12" (300 mm)), and the use of condensate traps. One diagram shows a maximum steam line length of 13 ft (4 m). Another illustrates the connection of the condensate line to a funnel with a trap, noting the minimum downslope and air gap requirements.

Water Installation

This section covers the requirements for connecting the water supply and drain for the Condair RS II.

Water Supply:

  • Connect according to the diagram and applicable local regulations.
  • Admissible water temperature: 33.8 to 77.0 °F (1 to 25 °C).
  • Admissible mains pressure: 30 to 80 psi (2.1 to 5.5 bar), hammer-free system.
  • Water Quality: Use exclusively untreated drinking water, water from a RO system, or de-ionized water. Do not use additives like corrosion inhibitors or disinfectants.
  • Conductivity: 1 to 1500 µS/cm. Water with conductivity less than 1 µS/cm is aggressive; blend if necessary.
  • Hardness: 0 to 12 grains/gallon.
  • Silica content: 0 to 12 ppm.
  • pH: 6.5 to 7.5.
  • Chloride content: 0 to 50 ppm.
  • Connection material must be pressure-proof and certified for the water type.
  • Important: Flush water lines thoroughly before connecting.

Caution: The humidifier connection thread is plastic. Tighten the adapter and union nut by hand only to avoid overtightening.

Water Drain:

  • Connect according to specifications and local regulations. Ensure drain pipes, funnels, and siphons are accessible for inspection and cleaning.
  • Drain water can be up to 140 °F (60 °C) normally, but may reach 212 °F (100 °C) in some cases. Plumbing materials must be rated for at least 212 °F (100 °C).
  • Lead the drain line to the funnel with a constant downslope (min. 1.2°). For units with two steam cylinders, use separate funnels.
  • Ensure drain lines do not slip out of or bottom out in the funnels. Maintain a minimum air gap of 1" (2.5 cm) between the drain line end and the funnel.
  • Recommendation: Install the funnel with an 8" (20 cm) lateral offset to prevent damage from rising steam.

Diagram Description: Diagrams show water supply connections using G 3/4" or 1/2" NPT adapters, specifying pipe sizes, pressure, and temperature ranges. They also detail the water drain connection, including the drain hose diameter (Ø1.18" / Ø30 mm), downslope requirement, and the setup with an open funnel and trap, noting the recommended offset.

Unit Mounting

This section provides guidance on locating and mounting the Condair RS II unit.

Locating the Unit:

  • Install the humidifier ensuring minimum bend radii for steam hoses (R=12"/300 mm) or pipes (R=5x internal diameter) and the required upslope/downslope (10°/2°).
  • Mount onto wooden studs or equivalent using 1/4 x 2" lag bolts and washers.
  • The back panel retains heat (up to 140-158 °F / 60-70 °C). Ensure the mounting surface is not heat-sensitive.
  • Install with sufficient space for maintenance access. Maintain minimum clearances as shown in the diagram.
  • The unit is IP21 protected; install in a drip-proof location and comply with admissible ambient conditions.
  • Do not mount to hot or very cold walls, or near vibrating components.

Mounting the Unit:

  1. Mark attachment points 'A' and 'B' using a level.
  2. Install 1/4 x 2" lag bolts at 'A', leaving heads extended 1/4" (5 mm) for hanging.
  3. Remove the front panel(s) by unlocking the screws.
  4. Remove side panels by pulling them forward and then downwards.
  5. Carefully lift and hang the unit on the installed lag bolts.
  6. Install additional 1/4 x 2" lag bolts at 'B' through the rear panel into the mounting surface.
  7. Align the unit with a level and tighten the lag bolts.
  8. Reattach side panels by pushing them upwards into clips and then back until they stop.
  9. Reattach and secure the front panel(s).
