Dishwasher Safety

Your safety and the safety of others are very important. Always read and obey all safety messages provided in this manual and on your appliance. The safety alert symbol (⚠️) indicates potential hazards that can cause death or serious injury. Safety messages will be preceded by the word "DANGER" or "WARNING".

WARNING: When using the dishwasher, follow basic precautions, including:

Grounding Instructions

For a grounded, cord-connected dishwasher: The dishwasher must be grounded. Plug into an appropriate outlet installed and grounded according to local codes. Improper connection can result in electric shock. Consult a qualified electrician if unsure about grounding.

For a permanently connected dishwasher: Connect to a grounded metal, permanent wiring system, or run an equipment-grounding conductor with circuit conductors and connect to the equipment-grounding terminal or lead.

WARNING: Tip Over Hazard. Do not use dishwasher until completely installed. Do not push down on open door. Doing so can result in serious injury or cuts.

Quick Steps

  1. Prepare and load dishwasher.
  2. Add detergent for cleaning and rinse aid for drying.
  3. Select a cycle and option.
  4. Start dishwasher.

Dishwasher Use

Step 1: Prepare and Load the Dishwasher

IMPORTANT: Remove leftover food, bones, toothpicks, and other hard items from dishes. Remove labels from containers before washing.

Rack Loading

Ensure nothing obstructs the spray arm(s) from spinning freely for effective water spray to all soiled surfaces. Make sure no items block the detergent dispenser when the door is closed. Load items with soiled surfaces facing down and inward towards the spray for better cleaning and drying. Avoid overlapping items like bowls or plates that may trap food. Place plastics, small plates, and glasses in the upper rack; only wash plastic items marked "dishwasher safe." To prevent thumping/clattering noises, load dishes so they do not touch each other and secure lightweight items. When loading silverware, always place sharp items pointing down.

Step 2: Add Detergent

Use automatic dishwasher detergent only. Add powder, liquid, or tablet detergent just before starting a cycle. Fresh detergent yields better cleaning. Store detergent containers tightly closed in a cool, dry place.

The amount of detergent depends on soil level and water hardness. For heavily soiled loads or hard water, more detergent is needed. For soft water, use less to prevent etching. Fill the Main Wash section of the dispenser as shown, and the Pre-Wash section if needed, according to your water hardness. Amounts shown are for standard powdered detergent; follow package instructions for other types.

Step 3: Add Rinse Aid

Rinse aid is essential for good drying performance. Without it, dishes and the interior will have excessive moisture, and the heat dry option will not perform as well. Rinse aid prevents water from forming droplets that cause spots or streaks and helps water drain off dishes after the final rinse. Check the rinse aid indicator; add rinse aid when the indicator drops to "Refill." To add, turn the dispenser cap counterclockwise, pour rinse aid until the indicator window is full, then replace and turn the cap clockwise to lock.

The factory setting of 2 usually gives good results. For hard water or spotting issues, try a higher setting by turning the arrow adjuster inside the dispenser.

Step 4: Select a Cycle and Options

Choose your desired wash cycle and any options. Cycle length varies based on selections; some can take up to 3.5 hours. Refer to the "Cycle and Option Descriptions" charts for details.

Step 5: Start or Resume a Cycle

Run hot water at the nearest sink until hot, then turn off the water. Push the door firmly closed; it latches automatically. Select your wash cycle and options, or press START/RESUME to repeat the previous cycle. You can add an item before the main wash starts by opening the door slowly, adding the item, and closing the door firmly. Lights will stop flashing when the door is properly shut. Press START/RESUME; the cycle will resume after a slight delay.

Cycle and Option Descriptions

This information covers several models; your dishwasher may not have all described cycles and options.

Dishwasher Features

Split & Fit™ Utensil Basket

The silverware basket can be separated and placed in various locations in the lower rack. Load flatware and utensils into both sections or just one, depending on your load. Use silverware basket lids for optimal spacing and cleaning.

Cup Clips

Located in the center of the upper rack, these clips hold lightweight plastic items, cooking utensils, and knives in place.

Folding Tines

In the front right corner (upper rack), folding tines provide convenient loading space for large, bulky items like pots, pans, and mixing bowls. Gently push tines out of holders toward the center rack and lay them down.

Stack-Rack & Cup Shelf

Fold down the extra shelf on the right-hand side of the upper rack to hold additional cups, stemware, or long items like utensils and spatulas. The Cup Shelf on the left or right side serves the same purpose.

Adjustable Upper Racks

The upper rack can be raised or lowered to accommodate taller items in either rack. Full-size dinner plates can fit in the upper rack if it's in the lower position. Always unload racks before adjusting. To adjust, press both rack adjusters and lift/slide the rack to the desired position.

SilverWare Blast

This feature focuses cleaning power on your silverware.

Removable Upper Rack

Allows washing larger items like stock pots, roasters, and cookie sheets in the lower rack. To remove: Roll the rack partially out, remove the plastic push tab rack stops from each track by pushing inward on the ridged area, then pull the rack straight out. Support the track while removing stops. To replace, reverse the steps.

Dishwasher Care

Cleaning the Dishwasher

Clean the exterior with a soft, damp cloth and mild detergent. For stainless steel exteriors, use a recommended stainless steel cleaner and polish (Part Number 31464). Clean the interior with a paste of powdered dishwasher detergent and water, or liquid detergent on a damp sponge after the interior has cooled.

A white vinegar rinse can remove white spots and film. Use 2 cups (500 mL) of white vinegar in a glass or dishwasher-safe cup on the bottom rack. Run a complete cycle using air-dry or energy-saving dry. Do not use detergent. Vinegar is acidic and frequent use could damage the dishwasher.

If the dishwasher isn't draining well, check and clean the drain air gap, if equipped.

Storing the Dishwasher

If not using the dishwasher during summer months, turn off the water and power supply. For winter storage or use in seasonal dwellings, have the dishwasher winterized by authorized service personnel to prevent water damage, especially if exposed to freezing temperatures.

Troubleshooting

Try these solutions or visit our website for FAQs to avoid service calls. For assistance in the U.S.A., visit www.maytag.com; in Canada, www.maytag.ca.

PROBLEM SOLUTION
DISHWASHER DOES NOT RUN Ensure door is closed and latched. Verify a cycle is selected. Check power supply (circuit breaker/fuse). If other lights blink and unit won't run, call for service. If START/RESUME light blinks, press START/RESUME and close door within 3 seconds.
DETERGENT REMAINS IN DISPENSER OR TABLET ON BOTTOM OF TUB Check for obstructions blocking the dispenser (e.g., cookie sheets). Ensure detergent is fresh and lump-free. Verify cycle completion (green light on). If not complete, press START/RESUME and close door within 3 seconds.
CYCLE RUNS TOO LONG Cycles can run up to 3 hours for water/energy savings. Ensure water heater is set to 120°F (49°C). Cooler water delays the cycle. Some options (e.g., Heated Dry) add time. Try Insta Wash cycle. Run hot water at a nearby faucet before starting.
DISHWASHER NOT DRYING Plastic and non-stick items are harder to dry. Towel drying may be necessary. Use rinse aid with Heated Dry option. Proper loading affects drying. Glasses/cups with concave bottoms can hold water; unload bottom rack first and place these items on a slant.
WILL NOT FILL Ensure water supply is turned on. Check float for obstructions. Check for excessive suds; if detected, the dishwasher may not operate or fill properly.
WATER REMAINS IN TUB / WILL NOT DRAIN Ensure cycle is complete (green light on). If not, press START/RESUME and close door within 3 seconds. If connected to a food waste disposer, ensure the knockout plug is removed. Check drain hose for kinks. Check drain or disposer for food obstructions. Check house fuse or circuit breaker.
HARD WATER (WHITE RESIDUE ON DISHWASHER INTERIOR OR GLASSWARE) Liquid rinse aid is necessary. Use correct detergent amount. If residue disappears after soaking in vinegar, adjust detergent/rinse aid. See "HARD WATER" section. Ensure water temperature is 120°F (49°C). Try Hi Temp and Sani Rinse options. Run a vinegar rinse to remove spotting.
ODORS If not used daily, run a rinse cycle with a partial load. Run a vinegar rinse: place 2 cups (500 mL) vinegar in a glass on the bottom rack, run a normal cycle with Heated Dry OFF. Do not use detergent. Check for proper draining (see "WATER REMAINS IN TUB / WILL NOT DRAIN").
NOISY Surging, water valve hissing, and detergent dispenser opening are normal sounds. Ensure filters are properly installed. Thumping may occur if items interfere with wash arms; readjust dishware. Improper installation can affect noise levels.
FOOD SOILS REMAIN ON DISHES Ensure correct loading. Select proper cycle/options (Pots Pans/Hi Temp for tough loads). Ensure incoming water temp is at least 120°F (49°C). Use proper amount of fresh detergent; more needed for heavy soil/hard water. Scrape food before loading (do not pre-rinse).
DID NOT SANITIZE If Sanitized light blinks, the load is NOT sanitized. Cycle was interrupted, or water heater is set too low. Set water heater to 120°F (49°C).
DAMAGE TO DISHWARE Improper loading can cause chipping or damage. Refer to loading instructions.
BLINKING LIGHTS If START/RESUME blinks, press START/RESUME and close door within 3 seconds. If Clean or other lights blink and unit won't run, call for service.
ETCHING (PERMANENT CLOUDINESS) Caused by hot water, too much detergent with soft water, or pre-washing. Detergent needs food soil to act upon. Etched glassware is permanently damaged. To avoid, adjust detergent for water hardness, stop pre-washing, and use heating options only when incoming water is below 120°F (49°C).
LEAKING WATER Ensure proper installation and levelness. Suds can cause overflow; measure detergent accurately and use only dishwasher-specific detergents. Less detergent needed in soft water. Try a different detergent brand if sudsing continues. Ensure rinse aid dispenser lid is secure and not overfilled.
TUB IS DISCOLORED High iron content in water or tomato-based foods can discolor the tub. A citrus-based cleaner can be used.
