Setting Up Smart Controls Restrictions

This document outlines the process for setting up Smart Controls restrictions on your mobile service, providing a step-by-step guide for easy implementation.

Overview

Setting up Smart Controls restrictions is an easy 6-step process designed to help you manage and control mobile service usage.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: On the Dashboard

On the dashboard, select the mobile service for which you would like to set up restrictions and click 'Setup restrictions'.

Description of the dashboard screenshot: The screen shows the 'MY ACCOUNT' interface, featuring navigation links like 'Contact us', 'Help & support', 'Account Services', and 'Powered by Google'. It displays a list of services under the account, such as 'Igor Standard' (0422333444) and 'Jessica Sponsored' (0477888999), each with a prominent 'Setup restrictions' button. Below these, there's a section for 'Services belonging to other accounts' and an overview of 'Blocked events' and 'Top events' with charts and category breakdowns (Voice calls, Internet visits, Internet categories). The footer includes links to 'Site map', 'Privacy', 'Terms', etc., and mentions 'About Telstra'.

Step 2: Initial Setup

'Initial setup' allows you to input a name for this mobile service for easy reference. Select 'Setup restrictions' and click 'Next'.

Description of the 'Initial setup' screen: This screen, part of the 'MY ACCOUNT' interface, is titled 'Setup Smart Controls for 0400111222'. It presents a progress bar indicating 'Step 1: Initial setup' through 'Step 6: Summary'. The 'Initial setup' section prompts the user to add an optional name for the service (maximum 50 characters). It offers three options for starting restrictions: 'Set new restrictions' (start with no set restrictions), 'Copy restrictions from another service' (allowing selection from a dropdown), or 'Keep changes you're already made'. A 'Cancel' button and a 'Next >' button are present. A summary of current call and internet usage statistics is displayed at the bottom.

Step 3: General Restrictions

'General restrictions' is where you can select recommended voice call and internet categories to block. Check the boxes according to your needs and click 'Next'.

Description of the 'General restrictions' screen: This screen, within the 'MY ACCOUNT' setup for Smart Controls, shows 'Step 2: General restrictions' selected. It lists 'Blocked phone categories' (e.g., International Numbers, Premium Services) and 'Blocked internet categories'. For internet categories, users can select presets like 'All', 'Adult', 'Family', 'Gambling', 'Entertainment', 'Images', 'Games', etc., or use 'Custom' and 'Clear all selections'. A note advises that Telstra filters content but cannot guarantee accuracy. A 'Cancel' button, '< Previous' button, and 'Next >' button are visible. Usage statistics are shown at the bottom.

Step 4: Specific Restrictions

'Specific restrictions' is where you can include specific phone numbers and/or websites you would like to always block. Input the relevant details and click 'Next'.

Description of the 'Specific restrictions' screen: This screen, part of the 'MY ACCOUNT' Smart Controls setup ('Step 3: Specific restrictions'), allows users to add specific phone numbers and internet sites to be blocked. It features two sections: 'Blocked phone numbers' with columns for 'Name (optional)' and 'Number' (e.g., Anthony, 0412365485; Amy, 0415444888; Sam, 0411222555), and 'Blocked internet sites' with columns for 'Name (optional)' and 'Site' (e.g., Crown, www.crowncasino.com; Facebook, www.facebook.com). A note specifies name length and allowed characters. A 'Cancel' button, '< Previous' button, and 'Next >' button are present. Usage statistics are displayed at the bottom.

Step 5: Safelist

'Safelist' allows you to specify any phone numbers and/or websites that are always allowed. There are two types of safe lists: Standard and Exclusive.

  • Standard Safelist (default): Refers to a list of phone numbers and websites that are always allowed, even if time restrictions are applied, but does not block all other numbers or websites by default.
  • Exclusive Safelist: Is the same as the Standard Safelist, however, it will block all other phone numbers and websites.

If you would like to set a safelist, choose the type of safelist you would like to use and input the relevant details and click 'Next'.

Description of the 'Safelist' screen: This screen, showing 'Step 4: Safelist' in the 'MY ACCOUNT' setup, details the Safelist options. It indicates the current status, e.g., 'You are using an Exclusive Call Safelist' and 'You are using a Standard Internet Safelist'. Options to 'Convert to a Standard Call Safelist' or 'Convert to an Exclusive Internet Safelist' are provided. Users can add allowed phone numbers (e.g., Grandma, 0433566985; Dad, 0411588955; Mum, 0400587622) and internet sites (e.g., School, www.primaryschool.com; Kumon, www.kumon.com). A 'Cancel' button, '< Previous' button, and 'Next >' button are visible. Usage statistics are shown at the bottom.

Step 6: Special Time Periods

'Special time periods' is where you can define the time of the day, for each day of the week, when you would like the restrictions to be in place. For example, block voice calls and internet access during school hours and homework time.

Description of the 'Special time periods' screen: This screen, labeled 'Step 5: Special time periods' within the 'MY ACCOUNT' setup, features a timetable grid for defining time restrictions. Users can select actions like 'Allow all', 'Block phone', 'Block internet', or 'Block all' and then drag blocks of time on the timetable for each day of the week (Monday to Sunday). The timezone is set to 'Australia/ACT - Eastern Standard Time (New South Wales)'. A 'Cancel' button, '< Previous' button, and 'Next >' button are present. Usage statistics are displayed at the bottom.

Step 7: Summary

'Summary' screen will display all the restrictions you have just included. If you are happy with them, click 'Apply'.

Description of the 'Summary' screen: This final screen, showing 'Step 6: Summary' in the 'MY ACCOUNT' setup, provides a comprehensive summary of all the configured restrictions. It details the 'Call Safelist' (e.g., 'You are using an Exclusive Call Safelist' with allowed numbers like Grandma, Dad, Mum) and the 'Internet Safelist' (e.g., 'You are using a Standard Internet Safelist' with allowed sites like www.primaryschool.com, www.kumon.com). It prompts the user to click 'Apply' to complete the setup. 'Cancel' and '< Previous' buttons are also visible. Usage statistics are shown at the bottom.
