Installation Instructions

Step 1: Attaching Motor to Linkage Assembly

The motors must be attached to the Linkage assemblies before continuing the installation process.

Exploded View Components: Motor, Gear Cover, Socket Cap Screw, Washer.

CAUTION: HANDLE WITH CARE. Motors are packed separately from Linkage assemblies. Position and fasten the motor carefully.

CAUTION: Dropping the assembly or excessive impact may cause damage to the motor.

  1. Position the gear cover (7) if not already in place.
  2. Seat the motor (8) onto the three mounting bosses. Adjustment of the gear by moving swing arms may be required.
  3. Fasten the motor with three motor mount screws (15) using a 4mm Hex Head. Tighten screws to 36 in-lbs (4N-m). Do not over-torque.

Step 2: Front and Rear Linkage Installation (1500 Models Only)

1500 MODELS ONLY!

Front Idler Linkage: Thread bolt (10) halfway into the first sheetmetal tab/hole from the front. Set linkage over bolt. Tighten lower bolt (10) to 16 ft-lbs (22N m). Finger tighten nut (11) onto bolt (10). Install bolt (12) and torque to 16 ft-lb (22N m). Torque lower nut (11) to 16 ft-lb (22N m) using a wrench to hold lower bolt in place.

Note: U-Nut (13) may not be needed on some trucks. Threaded nut may not be present on some vehicles; bolt will assemble same as step 3.

Rear Drive Linkage: Install driver side Motor Linkage in the fourth sheetmetal tab/hole from the front. Linkage will then clear the parking brake cable.

Installation for Extended Cab: Approximately 13" from the back of the cab.

Installation for Crew Cab: Approximately 29" from the back of the cab.

Set linkage into the second to last sheetmetal tab/hole from the rear. Use bolt (10) and nut (11) to hold in position. Install bolt (12) into the upper mounting hole and snug both bolts. Torque upper bolt (12) to 16 ft-lbs (22N m) first, then torque lower bolt (10) and nut (11) to 16 ft-lb (22N m). Repeat linkage installation on the passenger side.

Step 3: Running Board Mounting

Slide mounting T-nut into position, aligning the end of the board with the rear edge of the back door. Mount board and tighten fasteners to 10 ft-lbs. Ensure linkages are squared to the body prior to torqueing fasteners.

Step 4: Controller Mounting

Using the two 11" cable ties (17), mount the controller (5) to a support arm next to the battery. Plug in the harness, ensuring locking tabs engage.

Step 5: Power Connection

Remove power fuse. Attach power lead (RED wire) to the positive pole on the battery. Attach ground lead to the negative battery pole.

CAUTION: Do not ground wrench when engaged with nut.

Step 6: Wire Harness Routing (General)

Route the long end of the wire harness above the engine and down through the driver's side wheel well. Zip tie the harness to cowling clips on the firewall. Route the short end down the passenger's side.

Step 7: Carpet and Grommet Installation

Pull up the carpet and drill a 9/32" hole in the metal. Insert the supplied rubber grommet (19).

Step 8: Wire Harness Routing to Motor

Route the wire harness along the frame and back towards the rear linkage. Secure with zip ties (14). Push both wires through the rubber grommet (19). Connect the harness to the motor (8). Secure the harness with tie wraps.

Note: Seal holes with silicone glue and cover with tape so carpet does not stick to glue.

Step 9: Front Door Wiring Preparation

FRONT DOOR WIRING: Steps 13-30 are for front doors.

Pop off the cover plate. Work across the bottom of the cover. Once the bottom is popped loose, pull down and out.

Remove front door cover plates behind the door handle and in the bottom of the grab handle to access mounting screws.

Step 10: Door Panel Removal (Front Doors)

Using a 7mm socket, remove the 6 screws securing the door panel. Pry all panel fasteners loose, starting at the door hinge side and working around the bottom towards the latch side.

Once panel pins are out, lift up on the panel and off the door.

Remove the door latch cable from the door panel.

Remove the plug from the door panel.

Remove the accordion seal at the door jamb and use the supplied red wire (22) to route wire into the kickpanel.

Step 11: Trigger Wire Routing (Front Doors)

Tape the red wire (22) to the grey with black wire (driver side) and tan with white stripe (passenger side). Pull the trigger wire out and remove the red wire. Next, run the trigger wire through the rubber accordion. Save the red wire for rear doors.

Route the trigger wire into the door. Poke a hole through the rubber grommet and push the wire through. Pull back the door weather guard and run the wire across the door panel to the door switch plug.

Posi-Tap™ Instructions: Insert wire into Posi-Tap (18), then tighten. For wire preparation, strip 3/8" and then insert and tighten.

Using the supplied Posi-Tap connector (18), connect the trigger wire on the harness (Driver Side: Grey/Black Stripe & Passenger Side: Tan/White Stripe) to the solid dark grey wire on the door switch plug. The passenger side shares the same color wire. Note: The wire is located in the upper outer pin of the plug (left on driver, right on passenger side).

Remove the seal on the door panel by removing metal clips that attach it to the panel with a flat screwdriver. Attach clips to grooves in the door.

Step 12: Door Panel Reassembly (Front Doors)

Re-attach the window seal, ensuring it is pushed against the edge.

Replace the plug and door latch cable. Reassemble the door panel and replace the screws removed from step 14.

Replace cover plates.

Reassemble the accordion boot by removing the retainer ring from the body. Slide the boot over the ring and reattach to the vehicle.

Step 13: Rear Door Wiring Preparation

REAR DOOR WIRING: Steps 28-38 are for rear doors.

Pull up the rear sill plate cover as shown.

Pull back the B-pillar interior panel to gain access. Pull back the accordion seal.

Step 14: Wire Routing and Connection (Rear Doors)

Use the supplied red wire (22) and feed it through the accordion and into the door panel.

Feed the wire to the front sill area. Run the wire between the door seal and the black wire casing. Place the wire under the loom and connect the red wire to the PowerStep trigger wire (Light blue and black stripe on driver side and Green with a black stripe on passenger side) using the supplied butt connector (21). Once crimped, use a heat gun to shrink the tube.

Remove the rear door cover plates behind the door handle and in the bottom of the grab handle to access mounting screws.

Using a 7mm socket, remove the 4 screws that secure the rear door panel in place.

Pry all panel fasteners loose, starting at the door hinge side and working around the bottom towards the latch side of the door.

Once panel pins are out, lift up on the panel and off the door.

Remove the door latch cable from the door panel.

Route the trigger wire into the door. Poke a hole through the rubber grommet and push the wire through. Pull back the door weather guard and run the wire across the rear door panel to the door switch plug.

Using the supplied Posi-Tap connector (18), connect the trigger wire to the dark grey with white stripe wire on the door switch plug. Passenger side shares the same color wire. Note: Wire is located in the upper outer pin of the plug (left on driver, right on passenger side).

Step 15: LED Lamp Installation

On each side of the vehicle, measure from the front edge of the door line on the pinch weld to the specified lengths. Measure at 23" for the front LED Light (20) and 63" for the rear LED Light (20).

Affix the lamp (20) to the rocker panel surface. Ensure the lamp is affixed to a clean, flat surface. There is a step down midway across the surface; affix the lamp just outside of the step down.

Using supplied butt connectors (21), connect the lamp wires. Red to Red, Black to Black. Once crimped, use a heat gun to shrink the tube. Close and wrap conduit with electrical tape. Secure all loose wires with cable ties (14, 17). Pull lamp wires upward to avoid any wire snagging.

Step 16: Final Reassembly and System Check

Repeat steps for door panel reassembly.

Reinstall fuse. Check that all doors activate the Power Step and the LED Lights work when doors open and close. Reinstall any remaining trim panels.

Final System Check

Check that all doors activate the PowerStep and the LED lights work when doors open and close.

Normal Operation: When the doors open, PowerStep automatically deploys from under the vehicle. When the doors are closed, PowerStep will automatically return to the stowed/retracted position. Note that there is a 2-second delay before the PowerStep returns to the stowed/retracted position.

Correct Operation of Lights: All four lamps will illuminate upon opening any door of the vehicle. Lamps will stay on until restowing of both Power Steps or until 5 minutes has expired with the doors open. When the lights timeout after 5 minutes, they can be reilluminated by closing and opening any door of the vehicle.

Power-Deployable Running Boards Operation

AMP Research PowerStep running boards automatically move when the doors are opened to assist entering and exiting the vehicle.

  • Automatic power deploy: The running boards will extend down and out when the doors are opened.
  • Automatic power stow: The running boards will return to the stowed position when the doors are closed. There will be a 2-second delay before the running boards move to the stowed position.
  • Automatic stop: If an object is in the way of the moving running board, the running board will automatically stop. To reset, clear any obstruction, then simply open and close the door to resume normal operation.
  • Manually set in the deployed (OUT) position for access to the roof: The running boards can be manually set in the deployed position by firmly holding the step down with your foot while at the same time closing the door. To resume normal operation, open and close the door.

Maintenance

In adverse conditions, debris such as mud, dirt, and salt may become trapped in the running board mechanism, possibly leading to unwanted noise. If this occurs, manually set the running boards to the deployed position and flush the front and rear hinge arms with a high-pressure car wash wand. Avoid spraying the motors directly. After washing, apply silicone spray lubricant to the hinge pivot pins. Do not apply silicone, wax or protectants like Armor All® to the running board stepping surface.

Caution! Keep hands away when the running board is in motion. ⚠️
