Defender Foot Defender Fitting Tips
Step 1: Preparation and Initial Placement
Action: Deflate the air cell by pushing the silver button.
Patient Setup: Place the patient in a tall diabetic sock that extends above the mid-calf.
Boot Preparation: Remove the AFO (Ankle Foot Orthosis) front closure.
Placement: Place the patient's heel firmly into the back of the boot.
Step 2: Applying the Closure
Application: Apply the front AFO closure, starting with the hook & loop fastener near the toes and working your way up the boot.
Strap Adjustment: Ensure the top straps are not too tight. There should be enough space to fit approximately two fingers between the strap and the shin.
Fit Note: The boot is not intended to fit tightly.
Step 3: Pneumatic System Usage and Safety
Recommendation: Patients with neuropathy or wounds are not recommended to use the pneumatic system for fitting.
For Others: For all other users, pump air into the boot using the red button. Aim for 3-8 pumps to achieve a snug fit at the heel.
Removal/Adjustment: Release the air before fitting or removing the boot.
Pump Limit: Never exceed 8 pumps in total, as this may trigger the safety valve on the pump, rendering it unusable.
Safety Feature: This pneumatic pump is designed as a safety feature, particularly for patients with neuropathy. However, it can also restrict blood flow to the foot.
Medical Advice: Always check with your medical professional before using the device.
Fitting Guidance Visuals
Correct Fit: The AFO should be angled appropriately to the tibia (shin). This is indicated as "JUST RIGHT" with a green checkmark.
Incorrect Fit (Too Tight): An incorrect angle to the tibia (shin) is shown, marked with a red 'X' and labeled "TOO TIGHT".
