Precautions

Handling of the lens

Handle the lens with care to avoid dropping, bumping, or applying excessive force, which could cause malfunction or damage. Dust, dirt, or smudges (water, oil, fingerprints) on the lens surface can affect image quality. Use a blower to remove dust and dirt, then gently wipe with a soft, dry cloth. When not in use, attach the lens cap and rear cap to prevent dust and particles from entering the lens. To protect the lens contact points (1), avoid touching them, allowing them to become dirty, or placing the lens with the mount surface facing down.

Dust and splash resistant

The lens offers an extra level of protection against minimal moisture, water, or dust. This does not guarantee damage will not occur if subjected to direct contact or infiltration. Ensure the lens is attached to a dust and splash resistant camera. Be careful to prevent foreign objects from entering the lens mount, contact points, camera, or lens when attaching/removing. Wipe off any water droplets with a soft, dry cloth.

A lens mount rubber is used for enhanced dust and splash resistance. This rubber may leave scuff marks on the camera mount, but this does not affect performance. Contact Panasonic for information on replacing the lens mount rubber.

Condensation (when the lens is fogged up)

Condensation can occur due to changes in ambient temperature or humidity, potentially causing stains, mold, or malfunction. If condensation forms, turn off the camera and leave it for approximately 2 hours until the lens temperature stabilizes to ambient temperature.

Supplied Accessories

Check that all accessories are supplied before use. Product numbers are correct as of January 2024 and may be subject to change.

Note: Lens hood, cap, and rear cap are fitted at the time of purchase.

Names and Functions of Components

1 Lens surface
The front optical element of the lens.
2 Focus ring
Rotate to manually focus when the camera is set to MF. The focus ring's movement range can be adjusted via compatible camera menus.
3 AF/MF switch
Switches between Auto Focus (AF) and Manual Focus (MF). Note: If the camera is set to MF, it will operate in MF regardless of this switch setting.
4 Focusing distance range selector switch
Selects the AF focusing distance range to improve AF speed:
  • [FULL]: 0.204 m (0.669 ft) to ∞
  • [0.5m-∞]: 0.5 m (1.64 ft) to ∞
  • [0.204-0.5m]: 0.204 m (0.669 ft) to 0.5 m (1.64 ft)
5 Contact points
Electrical contacts for communication with the camera.
6 Lens mount rubber
Seals the lens mount against dust and moisture.
7 Lens fitting mark
A mark on the lens mount for aligning with the camera mount.

Note: AF operation noise may be audible during video recording. Switching to MF can mitigate this.

Attaching the Lens

Refer to your digital camera's operating instructions for detailed lens attachment procedures. Ensure the camera is turned off and the lens rear cap is removed before attaching the lens.

Attaching the lens hood

Align mark A on the lens hood with the mark on the lens tip. Rotate the lens hood in the indicated [arrow] direction until it clicks into place, aligning mark B on the hood with the lens mark.

Removing the lens hood

Press button C on the lens hood and rotate it in the indicated [arrow] direction to detach.

Note: For compact transport, the lens hood can be attached in reverse. Align mark B on the lens hood with the lens mark and rotate in the [arrow] direction until it clicks.

Remove the lens hood during flash photography to prevent it from blocking the flash. Never carry the lens by holding only the lens hood to avoid accidental drops.

Notes on filter use

Lens caps or hoods can be attached with a filter already mounted. Using multiple filters may cause vignetting. Do not attach conversion lenses or adapters to the front of this lens, as it may cause damage.

About Macro Recording

This lens offers focus from macro range to infinity. Due to the longer focus lens movement, autofocus may take longer, and the depth of field is shallower in the macro range. For close-up focusing challenges, use a tripod or check camera settings. Panasonic recommends reducing the AF area or using Manual Focus (MF) for macro shots.

About the Exposure

When using the macro function for enlarged close-up shots, the effective F value (actual aperture) may differ from the nominal F value (displayed aperture). When using a standalone exposure meter, correction based on magnification and distance is necessary. The camera's automatic exposure system measures light through the lens and compensates automatically.

Guide for exposure correction when using a standalone exposure meter
Magnification (A) Distance (B) Nominal F value (C) Effective F value (D) Exposure correction (E)
1/∞ F2.8 F2.8 0
1/8.2 0.88 m (2.89 ft) F3.2 F3.2 +1/3
1/3.8 0.46 m (1.51 ft) F3.5 F3.5 +2/3
1/2.4 0.33 m (1.08 ft) F4.0 F4.0 +1
1/1.7 0.26 m (0.85 ft) F4.5 F4.5 +1 1/3
1/1.3 0.22 m (0.72 ft) F5.0 F5.0 +1 2/3
1/1.0 0.204 m (0.669 ft) F5.6 F5.6 +2

Note: Distance is the actual distance from the recording plane ([ ] mark on camera body) to the subject. Magnification represents (image size of subject at recording plane) / (actual subject size).

Cautions for Use

Avoid spraying the lens with insecticides or volatile chemicals, as they can damage the exterior or paint. Never point the lens at the sun or other strong light sources, as excessive light collection could cause fire or malfunction. In cold environments (below 0°C / 32°F), prolonged direct contact with the lens can cause skin injury. Use gloves for extended use. Clean gently with a soft, lint-free, dry cloth. Do not use solvents like benzine, thinners, alcohol, or kitchen cleansers, as they can deform the casing or peel coatings. Avoid chemical wipes. Avoid prolonged contact between the lens and materials like rubber or PVC. Do not disassemble or modify the product. For long-term storage, use a desiccant (silica gel). Before using the lens after a long period of storage, check all parts. Avoid using or storing the lens in locations prone to direct sunlight, high temperatures/humidity, sand, dust, fire, heaters, air conditioners, humidifiers, water, vibration, or inside vehicles, as these can cause operational problems or malfunctions.

Troubleshooting

Rattling sound or noise during operation: This is normal and caused by the internal lenses moving or the aperture operating. It is not a malfunction.
