NS Series Network Sensors
Johnson Controls
Product Overview
The NS Series Network Sensor offering includes NS Series Network Zone Sensors and NS Series Network Discharge Air Sensors. These sensors are designed to function directly with Metasys® system Field Equipment Controllers (FECs), Input/Output Modules (IOMs), VAV Modular Assembly (VMA16) Controllers, and Facility Explorer FX-PC Series Programmable Controllers. They are also compatible with Verasys™ and Johnson Controls Smart Equipment.
Key Features:
- Temperature Monitoring: Most NS Series Network Zone Sensors monitor room temperature. Options are available to monitor zone humidity, carbon dioxide (CO2), local temperature setpoint adjustments, and other variables.
- Occupancy Sensing: Some models include an onboard passive infrared (PIR) occupancy sensor that detects motion to maximize energy savings by adjusting space temperature based on occupancy status. This feature can facilitate trending of floor space usage.
- User Interface: Models include temperature setpoint dials or pushbuttons and LCDs to view zone temperature, Relative Humidity (RH), and adjust setpoints. Some models allow toggling between temperature and RH display, and offer °F/°C toggling.
- Fan Control: A fan mode pushbutton allows setting desired fan speed (AUTO-OFF-low-medium-high).
- Occupancy Override: An occupancy override function allows users to signal occupancy to override the scheduled mode.
- Connectivity: Sensors can be terminated using a modular jack or screw terminals. Mixing of phone jack and screw terminal devices on the same SA bus segment must be avoided.
- Mounting Options: Sensors can be surface mounted, vertical wallbox mounted, or flush mounted. Some models are designed to assist with California Energy Code (Title 24) requirements.
- Discharge Air Sensors: These sensors monitor duct temperature and transmit data to a local controller on the SA Bus. They are available with 4- or 8-in. temperature probes.
- Addressing: Some models have DIP switches for unique addressing, essential for applications requiring multiple sensors on the same bus.

Ordering Information
Detailed ordering information for various NS Series Network Zone Sensors and NS Series Network Discharge Air Sensors is provided in tables throughout the document (Tables 2-16).
Important: The NS Series Network Sensor is intended for normal operating conditions. Additional precautions should be designed into the control system to prevent injury or property damage in case of sensor failure or malfunction.
Note: Some features may not be supported in older versions of Metasys or Facility Explorer software. Keeping system software up to date is recommended.
Repair Information
If an NS Series Network Zone Sensor or NS Series Network Discharge Air Sensor fails to operate within specifications, it should be replaced. Contact the nearest Johnson Controls representative for replacement sensors.
Technical Specifications
Comprehensive technical specifications, including supply voltage, current consumption, terminations, sensor addressing, wire size, communication rate, mounting, temperature measurement range, sensor types, accuracy, ambient conditions, and compliance, are detailed in Tables 11-16.
Compliance: Products comply with various standards including BACnet International (BTL), UL, FCC, CAN/CSA, and CE Mark requirements.
Fault Code Capability
Certain NS Series Network Sensors offer fault code capability for California Title 24 economizer fault detection diagnostics (FDD). Table 10 lists the display text for these fault conditions and their possible problems.
Emissions Compliance
North American Emissions Compliance:
- United States: Tested and found to comply with FCC Rules Part 15 for Class A digital devices, designed for commercial environments.
- Canada: Meets Canadian Interference-Causing Equipment Regulations for Class A digital apparatus.
Warning: Changes or modifications not expressly approved by the party responsible for compliance could void the user's authority to operate the equipment.
