03. Warm-up: Sports Suggestions and Guidelines
WARNING! Before beginning this or any exercise program, consult your physician.
Warming up prepares the body for exercise by increasing circulation, supplying more oxygen to muscles, and raising body temperature. Begin each workout with 5 to 10 minutes of stretching and light exercise. Perform each stretch three times for an adequate warm-up.
Stretches:
- Stretch down: Bend knees slightly, stretch body down slowly, relax back and shoulders, reach hands towards toes. Hold for 10-15 seconds, rest briefly. Repeat 3 times.
- Hamstring stretch: Sit with one leg straight, the other leg bent inward. Touch toes of the straightened leg with the same-side hand. Hold for 10-15 seconds, rest briefly. Repeat 3 times for each leg.
- Calf and Achilles Tendon Stretches: Stand with one foot behind the other, hands against a wall, back leg straight, heels on the ground. Hold for 10-15 seconds, rest briefly. Repeat 3 times for each leg.
- Quadriceps Stretch: Stand steady, use one hand for support. Reach back with the other hand to grab the heel, pull slowly towards hips until thigh muscle tightness is felt. Hold for 10-15 seconds, rest briefly. Repeat several times for each leg.
- Sartorius (inner thigh) Stretch: Sit with feet together, knees pointing outwards. Grab feet with hands, pull towards groin. Hold for 10-15 seconds, rest briefly. Repeat 3 times.
