MIL ON WITH MULTIPLE COIL PRIMARY CIRCUIT DTCS P0351 THROUGH P0356—3.0L ENGINE

TSB 05-11-1

Ford: 2005 Escape

Mercury: 2005 Mariner

ISSUE

Some 2005 Escape/Mariner vehicles equipped with a 3.0L engine may exhibit a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) on with two or more diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for coil on plug (COP) primary circuit faults (P0351 through P0356). This may be due to the spark plugs causing RF interference with the PCM, resulting in damage to the PCM and COPs.

ACTION

It may be necessary to replace the PCM, COPs and install new level spark plugs. Refer to the following Service Procedure.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Perform KOER test.
    • If there is only one (1) coil circuit primary DTC (P035x) follow procedure “A”.
    • If there are two (2) or more coil circuit primary DTCs (P035x-P035x) follow procedure “B”.

PROCEDURE "A"

  1. Remove any spark plug and inspect for a 2-digit date code (Figure 1). If the date code is not present, replace all six (6) spark plugs with part number AGSF-32W-M1F4.
  2. Continue with normal PC/ED diagnostics for the DTC.

PROCEDURE "B"

  1. Remove any spark plug and inspect for a 2-digit date code (Figure 1). If the date code is not present, replace all six (6) spark plugs with part number AGSF-32W-M1F4.
  2. Replace all six (6) COPs.
  3. Replace PCM.
  4. Reprogram the passive antitheft system (PATS) keys.
