Rinnai XL MSX Cylinders
Fitting the element(s)
The electrical connection must be carried out by a qualified person in accordance with NZ Electrical Regulations. The water heater must have the heating element connected to an independent, fused, 230-240 VAC 50 Hz power supply with an isolating switch installed at the switch board. Disconnect all power prior to installation and commissioning.
⚠ NOTE Rinnai recommends a maximum thermostat temperature of 65 °C to avoid nuisance tripping of the over-temperature safety devices.
- Fit the 2" BSP brass MF extension into the middle port(s). Hemp and graphite is recommended. The element will not fit into the upper or lower ports.
- Fit the element to the MF extension using hemp and graphite.
- When tightened the label, screw, and high voltage must be facing upwards. This ensures that the element vents (as pictured) are on the bottom.
DO NOT ENERGISE THE ELEMENT UNTIL THE CYLINDER IS FILLED WITH WATER.
4. Data labels for all cylinder sizes are included in each element kit. Select the relevant data label for the cylinder size, element size, and number of elements and place above the element(s) in the position shown below.
5. Place the TPR valve label in the position shown below.

Wiring Diagram
A wiring diagram illustrates the connection of the heating element and thermostat to the main supply.
- Main supply: 230-240 VAC
- Connections are labeled E (Earth), N (Neutral), and A (Live).
- The Earth connection (Green/Yellow wire) goes to the casing of the ELEMENT.
- The Neutral connection (Blue wire) goes to one terminal of the ELEMENT.
- The Live connection (Brown wire) splits and goes to one terminal of the THERMOSTAT and one terminal of the ELEMENT.
- The other terminal of the THERMOSTAT is connected via a Brown wire to the other terminal of the ELEMENT.
