Blade Installation

WARNING

Before beginning installation, place the tractor on a firm and level surface, set the parking brake, place the PTO in the disengaged (OFF) position, stop the tractor's motor and remove the ignition key to prevent unintended starting.

WARNING

Cutting blades are sharp. Always protect hands by wearing heavy leather work gloves to grasp blades.

  1. Remove the deck from beneath the tractor (refer to Deck Removal in the Operator's Manual) then gently flip the deck over to expose its underside.
  2. Use a 15/16" wrench to hold the hex nut on top of the spindle assembly when loosening the hex nut (a) and washer (d)* securing the blade. A block of wood (c) may be placed between the deck housing and the cutting edge of the existing blade (b) to help in breaking loose the hex nut (a) and washer (d)*. See Figure 2.
  3. When reinstalling blades, be sure of the following (see Figure 2):
    a. Blades (b) are installed so wings are pointing upward toward the top of the deck.
NOTE: When replacing or installing the blades, be sure to install with the side marked "Bottom" or "Grass Side” (or with a part number stamped on it) facing the ground when mower is in operating position.
    b. Flat Washer (d)* is placed between bottom of blade (b) and hex nut (a).
  4. IMPORTANT! Align “S” shaped cutout on XTREME™ mulch blade with matching “S” shape on spindle for secure fit.
  5. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 on the other cutting blade.
  6. Tighten hex nut (a) to 70-90 ft-lbs (95-122 N-m).
  7. Reinstall the deck (refer to Deck Installation in the Operator's Manual).

Installing the Mulch Plug

  1. Pivot the chute deflector upward and remove the protective cover from the pin found on the deck's surface. See Figure 3.
  2. To install the mulch plug, pivot the discharge chute upward. Refer to Figure 4:
    a. Insert the mulch plug rod into the hole found on the bracket (or deck wheel bracket, on models so equipped).
    b. Position the rear of the mulch plug over the pin found on the deck's surface.

IMPORTANT! Be certain the bottom edge of the mulch plug is installed on the inside of the lip of the deck opening, as shown in Figure 5.

  3. Secure the mulch plug as follows:
    a. 42" Deck: Slide the mulch plug wire over the pin on the deck's surface, position the flat washer over the wire, and secure the mulch plug with the wing knob. See Figure 6.
NOTE: Make sure the wing knob is snug, and the wire is positioned inside the lip of the deck to keep the mulch plug securely in place. See inset in Figure 6.
    b. 46" Deck: Secure mulch plug with the wing knob. See Figure 6.
