Additional Safety Warning for Construction Dust
This section provides information on the risks associated with silica and wood dust, particularly relevant for construction work. It details health risks like lung cancer, silicosis, and COPD from breathing fine particles. The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) sets Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) for these dusts.
To reduce dust exposure:
- Reduce cutting by using appropriately sized building products.
- Use less powerful tools where suitable (e.g., a block cutter instead of an angle grinder).
- Employ alternative work methods (e.g., using a nail gun for cable trays instead of drilling).
- Always use approved safety equipment, including dust masks designed for microscopic particles, and utilize dust extraction facilities.
For more information, visit the HSE website: http://www.hse.gov.uk/construction or http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/cis69.pdf
Warning: Some dust particles from construction jobs can contain chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm, including lead from paints, crystalline silica from masonry, and arsenic/chromium from treated timber.
To reduce exposure to these chemicals:
- Work in a well-ventilated area.
- Use approved safety equipment, such as dust masks designed for microscopic particles.
Vibration
The European Physical Agents (Vibration) Directive aims to reduce hand-arm vibration syndrome injuries. Manufacturers must provide indicative vibration test results. The declared vibration emission value is a minimum level. Actual exposure can vary based on tool usage, condition, accessories, grip, and intended use. Adopt correct working practices to reduce vibration exposure. This tool may cause hand-arm vibration syndrome if not managed adequately.
Warning: Identify safety measures based on estimated exposure in actual use conditions. Using other tools reduces your total working period on this tool.
To minimise vibration exposure risk:
- ALWAYS use sharp chisels, drills, and blades.
- Maintain the tool and keep it lubricated.
- Avoid using tools in temperatures below 10°C.
- Plan work schedules to spread high vibration tool use over several days.
Health Surveillance
Employees should participate in an employer's health surveillance scheme to identify and prevent vibration-related diseases.

- 5. Store idle tools: Store tools in a dry, high, or locked-up place, out of reach of children.
- 6. Do not force the tool: Use the tool at its intended rate for better and safer performance.
- 7. Use the right tool: Do not use small tools for heavy-duty jobs or for unintended purposes (e.g., circular saws for tree limbs).
- 8. Dress properly: Avoid loose clothing or jewellery. Wear non-skid footwear and protective hair covering for long hair.
- 9. Use protective equipment: Wear safety glasses and a face or dust mask if dust is created.
- 10. Connect dust extraction equipment: If provided, ensure dust extraction and collecting equipment is connected and used properly.
- 11. Do not abuse the cord: Never yank the tool to disconnect. Keep the cord away from heat, oil, and sharp edges.
- 12. Secure work: Use clamps or a vice to hold the work securely.
- 13. Do not overreach: Maintain proper footing and balance.
