DOD 410 Series II PA/Monitor Processor
Owner's Manual
Introduction
Congratulations on your purchase of the 410 Series II P.A./Monitor Processor. This processor is designed for use with sound reinforcement systems or as the final EQ and level control for a monitor system. The 2/3rds octave EQ allows for quick and easy sound modification for music, recording, or sound reinforcement. Notch filters help eliminate unwanted noise, and the limiting and low cut features protect your amplifiers and speakers.
Front Panel
The front panel features:
- Power Switch: Applies power to the unit.
- Input Gain Stage: Controls the input signal level with a +12dB adjustment.
- Input/Output Section: Contains the EQ/Limit switch to toggle the graphic EQ, notch filters, and limiter. This allows for a "wet" or "dry" signal comparison. The input level and low cut filter are always active. A meter switch selects the LED level meter for input or output.
- Graphic EQ: A 15-band, 2/3rds octave graphic equalizer providing +12dB of gain per band. A peak LED indicates when the signal is 3dB below clipping.
- Notch Filters: Two narrow bandwidth notch filters with 24dB attenuation at selected frequencies. The x10 function adjusts the range. These filters are disabled when the depth control is at 0dB cut and are used to eliminate feedback or hum.
- Limiter: Features Automatic Variable Ratio Limiting™ (AVR Limiting). It functions as a mild compressor with a soft knee at low thresholds and a hard knee limiter at higher thresholds, offering speaker protection. A fast/slow speed switch affects attack and release times. A gain reduction meter displays the amount of gain reduction.
- Low Cut: A selectable low cut (high pass) filter that can be switched in or out, with selectable rolloff frequencies of 40 or 80Hz.
A visual representation of the front panel controls is provided, showing numbered positions for each function.
Rear Panel
The rear panel provides various input and output connections:
- Balanced Output: Accepts a female XLR plug. Maximum balanced output level is 21dBu. Output impedance is 102Ω balanced.
- Balanced/Unbalanced Output: Accepts a 1/4" tip-ring-sleeve balanced or 1/4" unbalanced tip-sleeve plug. Maximum output level is 21dBu. Output impedance is 20kΩ unbalanced and 40kΩ balanced.
- Balanced Thru Output: Accepts a female XLR plug. This output is hardwired to the input, allowing the signal to be split. Balanced output is possible with a balanced input signal.
- Balanced/Unbalanced Thru Output: Accepts a 1/4" tip-ring-sleeve balanced phone plug or a 1/4" unbalanced tip-sleeve plug.
- Balanced Input: Accepts a male XLR plug. Maximum allowable input is 21dBu. Input impedance is 102Ω balanced.
- Balanced/Unbalanced Input: Accepts a 1/4" tip-ring-sleeve balanced phone plug or a 1/4" unbalanced tip-sleeve plug. Maximum allowable input is 21dBu. Input impedance is 51Ω unbalanced and 102Ω balanced.
Safety warnings regarding electrical shock and exposure to rain or moisture are prominently displayed.
Safety Instructions
General Warnings:
- Electrical Shock Hazard: Do not open the unit. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel. Opening the chassis voids the warranty.
- Moisture: Do not expose the unit to rain or moisture. If liquid is spilled, shut off immediately and seek service. Disconnect during storms.
- Power Cord: Ensure the power cord is not walked on or pinched. Pay attention to the cord at the plug and where it exits the unit.
U.K. Mains Plug Warning:
- Discard any cut-off mains plug. Never insert a damaged plug into a 13 Amp power socket. Ensure the fuse cover is in place. Replacement fuses must be 13 amps and ASTA approved to BS1362.
European Safety Instructions:
- This appliance must be earthed.
- The mains lead cores are colored: BROWN (Live), BLUE (Neutral), GREEN and YELLOW (Earth).
- Ensure the plug terminals are connected correctly: Green/Yellow to E (Earth symbol), Blue to N, and Brown to L.
Important Protection Information:
- Water and Moisture: Do not use near water (e.g., bathtub, sink, wet basement, swimming pool). Prevent objects from falling into or liquids from spilling into the enclosure.
- Power Sources: Connect only to the type of power supply described or marked on the appliance.
- Grounding or Polarization: Do not defeat the grounding or polarization means of the appliance.
Installation
Install the 410 in a rack using the provided screws. Route the AC power cord to a convenient outlet away from audio lines.
Connections use 1/4" balanced (TRS) or unbalanced (TS) plugs, or balanced XLR plugs.
Wiring for Balanced Connections:
- 1/4" Plug: Tip (High+), Ring (Low-), Sleeve (Ground)
- XLR Plug: Pin 2 (High+), Pin 3 (Low-), Pin 1 (Ground)
Wiring for Unbalanced Connections:
- 1/4" Plug: Tip (High+), Sleeve (Ground)
An optional security panel can be installed to prevent unauthorized access to settings.
Applications
The DOD 410 Series II can be used in various audio applications:
- Tuning Audio Systems: Use with a real-time analyzer, calibrated microphone, and pink noise generator to flatten the audio spectrum response of a sound system and room environment.
- Gain-Before-Feedback: Increase system gain to the feedback point and use notch filters to attenuate oscillating frequencies.
- Limiting: Sets maximum output level to prevent clipping and protect speakers.
- Low Cut Filter: Protects amplifiers and speakers from low-frequency issues like wind noise or dropped microphones by rolling off extreme low frequencies.
- Intelligibility and Penetration: Tailor the audio signal for clarity in noisy environments, useful for public address systems.
- Creative Sound Shaping: Use the equalizer for pleasing sound or special effects.

Maintenance and Service
Keep the unit clean and occasionally check connectors and cables. There are no user-serviceable parts inside. Opening the chassis voids the warranty. All service and repair must be performed by the factory.
DOD Warranty
The warranty registration card must be mailed within ten days of purchase to validate the warranty. DOD warrants the product, when used in the U.S., to be free from defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service. DOD Electronics liability is limited to repairing or replacing defective materials within one year of purchase. The company is not responsible for consequential damages. Proof of purchase is the consumer's responsibility. DOD reserves the right to make design changes without obligation to install them on previously manufactured products. This warranty is in lieu of all other warranties, expressed or implied.
