2.7 Energization Indication
Options 'Z' and 'U' include LED indication of coil energization. The LED is located on the pilot valve assembly. When the solenoid is energized, the valve switches and the LED remains illuminated.
3 Installation
3.1 Installation
Warning: Do not install the product unless the safety instructions have been read and understood. The solenoid valve is an electrical product; for safety, install an appropriate fuse and circuit breaker before use.
3.2 Environment
Warning:
- Do not use in environments with corrosive gases, chemicals, salt water, or steam.
- Do not use in an explosive atmosphere.
- Do not expose to direct sunlight; use a suitable protective cover.
- Do not install in a location subject to vibration or impact; check product specifications.
- Do not mount in a location exposed to radiant heat.
- Products with IP65 enclosures (based on IEC60529) are protected against dust and water but cannot be used in water. IP65 compliance is achieved through proper mounting.
- If using in an atmosphere with possible contact with water droplets, oil, or weld spatter, take suitable preventive measures.
- When the solenoid valve is mounted in a control panel or energized for a long time, ensure the ambient temperature is within the valve's specifications.
3.3 Air Supply
Caution: When extremely dry air is used, lubrication properties inside the equipment may degrade, reducing reliability or service life. Contact SMC.
- Install an air filter: Install an air filter upstream near the valve with a filtration size of 5 µm or smaller.
- Ensure air quality: Take measures such as installing an aftercooler, air dryer, or water separator. Compressed air with excessive drainage can cause pneumatic equipment malfunction.
3.4 Lubrication
Caution: SMC products are lubricated for life at manufacture and do not require lubrication in service. If a lubricant is used, use turbine oil Class 1 (no additive), ISO VG32. Once lubricant is used, it must be continued as the original lubricant will be washed away.
Warning: Excessive lubrication can cause malfunction or response delay by oil accumulation inside the pilot valve. Do not apply a large amount of oil. If large amounts are needed, use an external pilot type with supply air on the pilot valve side in a non-lube state to prevent oil accumulation.
3.5 Piping
Caution: Before piping, clean up chips, cutting oil, dust, etc. Ensure sealant material does not enter the port. When using seal tape, leave 1 thread exposed on the end of the pipe/fitting. Tighten fittings to the specified torque.
Thread (R) | Tightening Torque (N·m) |
---|---|
1/8 | 3 to 5 |
1/4 | 8 to 12 |
3/8 | 15 to 20 |
1/2 | 20 to 25 |
3.6 Indicator Light/Surge Voltage Suppressor
Descriptions of wiring for various connector types:
Grommet, L/M Plug Connector
- Standard type (With polarity): Uses a polarity protection diode and a surge voltage suppressor (varistor) connected in parallel with the coil.
- With light/surge voltage suppressor (Z): Uses a polarity protection diode, an LED, and a surge voltage suppressor (varistor) connected in parallel with the coil.
M8 Connector
- Standard type (With polarity): Uses a diode to prevent reverse current and a surge voltage suppressor (varistor) connected in parallel with the coil. For Type W, connect + to 1 and - to 3. For Type WA, connect + to 4 and - to 3.
- With light/surge voltage suppressor (Z): Uses a diode to prevent reverse current, an LED, and a surge voltage suppressor (varistor) connected in parallel with the coil.
For AC: No 'S' option as surge voltage is prevented by a rectifier circuit.
Grommet, L/M Plug Connector With light
- (GZ, LZ, LOZ, MZ, MOZ): Includes LED indication.
DIN Terminal
- With surge voltage suppressor (DS): Uses a varistor for surge suppression. DIN terminals have no polarity.
- With light/surge voltage suppressor (DZ): Uses a varistor for surge suppression and an LED.
- With light (YZ): Uses an LED.
Note: Surge voltage suppressor of varistor has residual voltage corresponding to the protective element and rated voltage; therefore, protect the controller side from the surge voltage. The residual voltage of the diode is approximately 1 V.
3.7 With Power Saving Circuit
Power consumption is decreased to 1/4 by reducing the wattage required to hold the valve in an energized state (effective energizing time is over 62 ms at 24 VDC). The circuit uses a diode and LED. The electrical power waveform shows a reduced holding current compared to the standard type.
3.8 Residual Voltage of the Surge Voltage Suppressor
If a varistor or diode surge voltage suppressor is used, a residual voltage remains. Consider surge voltage protection for the controller. For diodes, residual voltage is approximately 1 V.
3.9 Extended Periods of Continuous Energization
If a valve will be continuously energized for an extended period, the coil heat may adversely affect performance. Use SY series DC specifications or power saving circuit types for continuous or long-duration energization.
3.10 Valve Mounting
Caution: Mount without slippage or deformation of gaskets. Tighten with specified torque.
Model | Thread size | Tightening torque (N·m) |
---|---|---|
SY3000 | M2 | 0.16 |
SY5000 | M3 | 0.8 |
SY7000 | M4 | 1.4 |
SY9000 | M3 | 0.8 |
3.11 Manual Override
Warning: The manual override switches the main valve regardless of the electric signal. Ensure safety before use.
- Non-locking push type (Standard): Press in the direction of the arrow.
- Push-turn locking slotted type [Type D]: Push down with a small flat head screwdriver until it stops, then turn 90° clockwise to lock. Turn counterclockwise to release. Do not apply excessive torque (0.1 N·m). Push down before turning to lock.
- Push-turn locking lever type [Type E]: Push down by finger until it stops, then turn 60° clockwise to lock. Turn counterclockwise to release.
Note 1: Locking type is not allowed in safety applications.
Caution: When locking manual override types (D, E), push down before turning to avoid damage or air leakage.
3.12 Solenoid Valve for 200, 220 VAC Specifications
Warning: AC specification solenoid valves with DIN-Terminal and L/M plug connector have a built-in rectifier circuit. This circuit generates heat when energized, potentially making the surface hot. Do not touch the solenoid valves.
3.13 How to Use Plug Connector
Caution:
- Attaching/Detaching Connectors: Hold the lever and connector unit, insert straight onto the solenoid valve pins until the lever's pawl locks into the groove. To detach, push the lever downward to release the pawl and pull the connector straight out.
- Crimping Connection of Lead Wire and Socket: Strip 3.2 to 3.7 mm of lead wire. Insert core wires evenly into sockets and crimp. Ensure wire covering does not enter the crimping area. Contact SMC for dedicated crimping tools.
- Attaching/Detaching Lead Wires with Sockets: Insert sockets into square holes (+/- indication) until they lock. Confirm by pulling lightly on lead wires. To detach, pull the lead wire while pressing the socket's hook with a thin stick (approx. 1 mm). Spread the hook outward if reusing the socket.
Precautions: Plug in and pull out connectors vertically without tilting. Be careful not to reverse polarity for power saving circuits. Excessive stress on cable connectors can affect IP65 rating; avoid stress over 30 N.
3.14 How to Use DIN Terminal
Caution: When making connections, use supported heavy-duty cord (Ø3.5 to Ø7) to satisfy IP65 standards. Tighten ground nut and holding screw within specified torque ranges.
- Connection: Loosen holding screw, pull out connector. Pry open terminal block housing. Insert lead wire cores into terminals and fasten securely. Secure cord with ground nut.
- Changing Entry Direction: Separate terminal block and housing; attach housing in desired direction (4 directions at 90° intervals). Be careful not to damage the light with lead wires.
Compatible cable: Cord O.D.: Ø3.5 to Ø7 (Reference: 0.5 mm², 2-core or 3-core, JIS C 3306).
3.14.1 Series SY3000
Caution: SMC provides a DIN style terminal connector for SY3000. Its width (15.8 mm) exceeds the valve body (10 mm), preventing assembly to standard manifolds/sub-plates. Contact SMC for manifold use. DIN style terminal connector and single manifold units have no external pilot specifications.
3.15 M8 Connector
Caution: M8 connector types have an IP65 rating but are not intended for use in water. Select an SMC connector cable (V100-49-1-) or FA sensor type connector with M8 threaded 3-pin specifications conforming to NECA4202 (IEC60947-5-2). Ensure connector O.D. is 10.5 mm or less for Series SY3000 manifold mounting. Tighten by hand (0.4 to 0.6 N·m). Failure to meet IP65 may result from using alternative connectors or insufficient tightening.
3.15.1 Connector Cable Mounting
Note: Mount connector cable correctly. Ensure the arrow symbol on the connector faces the triangle symbol on the valve when using SMC connector cable (V100-49-1-). Avoid squeezing in the wrong direction to prevent pin damage.

7 Maintenance
7.1 General Maintenance
Caution:
- Not following proper maintenance procedures could cause product malfunction and equipment damage.
- Compressed air can be dangerous if handled improperly. Maintenance of pneumatic systems should be performed only by qualified personnel.
- Before performing maintenance, turn off the power supply, cut off supply pressure, and confirm air is released to atmosphere.
- After installation and maintenance, apply operating pressure and power, and perform functional and leakage tests to ensure correct installation.
- If electrical connections are disturbed during maintenance, ensure they are reconnected correctly and safety checks are performed to maintain compliance with applicable national regulations.
- Do not modify or disassemble the product unless required by installation or maintenance instructions.
- When the 3-position closed centre type is in its rest position, air can be trapped. Exhaust this air pressure before removing piping or performing maintenance.
- When operating after remounting or replacement, confirm measures to prevent actuator lurching and verify normal operation.
- Low frequency operation: Valves should be operated at least once every 30 days to prevent malfunction (use caution regarding air supply).
7.2 Exhaust Throttle
The pilot valve and main valve share exhausts; ensure piping does not become restricted.
7.3 Air Supply
Warning: Use clean air. If compressed air supply includes chemicals, synthetic materials (including organic solvents), salinity, or corrosive gas, it can lead to damage or malfunction.
Caution: Install an air filter at the upstream side of the valve with a filtration degree of 5 µm or less.

- Leakage Voltage: When using a resistor or C-R element (surge voltage suppressor) in parallel with a switching element, leakage voltage may increase. Limit residual leakage voltage: DC coil: 3% or less of rated voltage. AC coil: 8% or less of rated voltage.
- Surge Voltage Suppressor: If a surge protection circuit contains non-ordinary diodes (zener, varistor), residual voltage remains. Consider surge voltage protection for the controller. For diodes, residual voltage is approx. 1 V.
- Low Temperature Operation: Operation is possible to -10°C, but take measures to avoid solidification or freezing of drainage and moisture.
- Mounting Orientation: Mounting orientation is universal.
Warning:
- Any use in an ISO 13849 system must be within specified limits and application conditions. The user is responsible for the specification, design, implementation, validation, and maintenance of the safety system (SRP/CS).
- Valves with pilot air returned spools or combined pilot air/spring returned spools require careful consideration. The return of the main spool to the safe position depends on pilot air pressure. Ensure operating pressure (internal or external pilot) is applied for spool return. If pilot air pressure drops below the minimum operating pressure, unexpected movement, delayed stopping/reversing, or uncommanded position changes may occur. The safety system design must account for this behavior; additional measures like an air tank may be necessary and must be evaluated by risk assessment. Refer to Section 2.6 Symbols for applicable products.
8.3 Safety Relays
Warning: If a safe output from a safety relay or PLC is used to operate this valve, ensure any output test pulse duration is shorter than 1 ms to avoid the valve solenoid responding.
