Chapter 1: Get to Know About Your Extender
This chapter introduces the extender's capabilities and physical appearance.
1.1. Product Overview
Bring Dead Zones Back to Life
Tired of Wi-Fi "dead zones"? The TP-Link extender connects wirelessly to your router, strengthening its signal and expanding coverage to areas previously unreachable. It also reduces signal interference for reliable Wi-Fi throughout your home or office.
Easy Installation & Quick Position
The extender works with any standard wireless router. Connect it instantly by pressing your router's WPS button (if available) followed by the extender's RE/WPS button, or follow the Quick Setup instructions via the extender's web management page. After connecting to a router, you can relocate the extender without further configuration. The intelligent signal light assists in finding the optimal location.
Easy Management with the TP-Link Tether App
The TP-Link Tether app offers a simple and intuitive way to access and manage your extender using smart devices.

Chapter 2: Set Up Internet Connection
This chapter guides you on boosting your host wireless coverage by setting up the internet connection.
2.1. Quick Setup
Power on
Plug the extender into an electrical outlet near your host router and wait for the POWER LED to turn solid on. For safety, it is recommended to plug the extender in an upright position.
Connect to the host network
There are three methods to connect to the host network: WPS button, web browser, or the TP-Link Tether app. Using the WPS button is the easiest method if your router has a WPS button.
2.1.1. Method One: Via the WPS Button
- Press the WPS button on your host router.
- Within 2 minutes, press the [WPS] button on the extender.
Tips: Some ISPs disable WPS by default. If WPS fails, refer to Method Two (Via a Web Browser). Consult your router manufacturer's guide for WPS button information.
Wait for the Signal LED to turn solid blue, indicating a successful WPS connection. If it doesn't, refer to Method Two.
If connecting to a dual-band router and only one band's LED lights up, repeat steps 1 and 2 for the other band.
Enjoy your extended network. Both extended networks share the same SSIDs and passwords as your host networks.
Tip: Extender performance depends on distance from the host router. Relocate your extender for optimal results, referring to the "Position Your Extender" section.
2.1.2. Method Two: Via a Web Browser
Connect your computer to the extender's wireless network. Find the SSID (network name) on the extender's label.
- For Windows Users: Unplug any Ethernet cable from your computer. Click the [Wi-Fi icon] on the taskbar and connect to either
TP-Link_Extender_2.4GHz
orTP-Link_Extender_5GHz
. - For Mac OS X Users: Unplug any Ethernet cable from your computer. Click the Wi-Fi icon in the top right corner of the screen and connect to either
TP-Link_Extender_2.4GHz
orTP-Link_Extender_5GHz
.
Launch a web browser and navigate to http://tplinkrepeater.net or http://192.168.0.254. Create a password for future logins and click Start.
Tip: If the login window doesn't appear, refer to the FAQ section.
Follow the Quick Setup wizard:
- Select your host router's 2.4GHz SSID and enter its password (not the management password), then click Next.
- Select your host router's 5GHz SSID and enter its password, then click Next. (Skip if your router doesn't support 5GHz).
- Choose to keep default SSIDs or customize them for the extended networks, then click Next.
- Verify your wireless settings and click Save. The corresponding LEDs should turn on.
- Enjoy your extended network.
2.1.3. Method Three: Via the TP-Link Tether App
- Download and install the TP-Link Tether app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, or scan the provided [QR code].
- Go to Wi-Fi Settings and connect your device to the extender's wireless network (
TP-Link_Extender_2.4GHz
orTP-Link_Extender_5GHz
). - Launch the Tether app and select your extender from the Local Device list.
- Create a password for future logins and click Create.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the configuration.
Tips: Use the Tether app to manage your extender, control LEDs, share passwords, and block devices.
2.2. Position Your Extender
To achieve optimal performance, place the extender into an electrical outlet between your host router and the Wi-Fi "dead" zone. Ensure the chosen location is within the range of your existing host network.
Wait for the Signal LED to be lit and solid blue. If it's not, relocate the extender closer to the host router for better signal quality.
Diagram Description: A visual shows a router connected to a host network, with an extender placed in an "Ideal extender Placement" zone between the router and a device. A [blue] indicator signifies an ideal location, while a [red] indicator signifies "Too far away".
Tip: To minimize signal interference, place the extender away from Bluetooth devices and other household electronics like cordless phones, microwave ovens, and baby monitors.

FAQ
Q1. How do I reset the extender to its factory default settings?
- With the extender powered on, use a pin to press the Reset button until all LEDs turn on momentarily, then release.
- Log in to the web management page, go to System Tools > Restore & Backup, and click Factory Restore.
Q2. What should I do if I forget my login password?
Refer to FAQ > Q1 to reset the extender and create a new login password. Note: The extender must be reconfigured after a reset.
Q3. What should I do if I forget my wireless password?
The factory default wireless password is on the extender's label. If altered, connect your computer via Ethernet and log in to http://tplinkrepeater.net. Go to Settings > Wireless > Wireless Settings to retrieve or reset the password.
Q4. What should I do if I cannot access the web management page?
- If wirelessly connected, ensure you are connected to the extender's SSID.
- If connected via Ethernet, ensure the connection is stable.
- Make sure your computer is set to obtain IP and DNS server addresses automatically.
- Verify the address http://tplinkrepeater.net or http://192.168.0.254 is entered correctly.
- Access the extender using its IP address (default: 192.168.0.254). If connected to a router, check your router's DHCP client list for the extender's current IP.
- Reset the extender and try again.
Q5. I have enabled wireless MAC filter, wireless access control, or access control list (ACL) on my router. What should I do before configuring the extender?
When a device connects through the extender, its MAC address is translated. If your router has MAC filtering, access control, or ACL enabled, devices connected via the extender may not get an IP address or access the internet.
To solve this:
- Log in to your router and disable MAC filter, wireless access control, or ACL. Refer to your router's user guide for details.
- Power on your extender and run Quick Setup.
- Connect all devices to the extended network and ensure the router's Link LED is lit.
- On your router, add the Online Devices' MAC addresses to your router's MAC filter table.
- Enable the router's MAC filter, wireless access control, or ACL to complete configuration.
