Unpacking

Your speakers were carefully tested and inspected before shipping, but please check for any damage during unpacking. It is rare that damage would occur but if this should happen please contact the shipping company immediately.

Quick setup

  1. Connect the included speaker wire between the HD4 speakers by firmly pressing each of the four speaker wire connectors into the ends of the terminals on each speaker. Note to observe proper wire polarity to each speaker connector.
  2. Attach the Bluetooth antenna to the HD4 rear panel.
  3. Verify that the power switch on the rear panel of the left speaker is in the OFF position.
  4. Connect the AC power cable to the HD4 left speaker rear panel and plug the other end of the cable into a functioning power outlet.

Wireless connection

  1. Turn power on via the rear panel power switch. HD4 will automatically go into Bluetooth “pair mode” and the Pair button on the rear panel will flash.
  2. On your device (phone, tablet, or computer) turn on Bluetooth and go to Bluetooth preferences.
  3. Select "Audioengine HD4" to pair and connect. The Pair indicator light on the HD4 rear panel should now be on solid.
  4. Play your music and adjust volume levels for HD4 and your device.

Pairing additional devices

To add additional wireless devices, enable Bluetooth pair mode by disconnecting HD4 from your device or by pressing and holding the Pair button on the HD4 rear panel for about 3 seconds until the pair indicator light starts flashing. Repeat steps 2 & 3 to connect another device.

HD4 wirelessly connects to one Bluetooth device at a time, however it will pair to and remember up to six different devices.

Wired connection

  1. Connect one of the included audio cables between your device and an input on the HD4 rear panel.
  2. Play music and adjust the volume on the speakers and your device to your desired listening levels.

USB computer audio connection

  1. Connect the included USB cable between your computer and the USB input on the rear panel of the HD4 left powered speaker.
  2. If using Windows, your HD4 should be recognized automatically. For MacOS, under System Preferences/Sound/Output, select "Audioengine HD4".

Inputs and volume settings

Multiple devices may be connected to the speakers at the same time and the wireless and aux inputs are open and active, so it's easy to switch between your phone, tablet, computer, TV, etc.

To adjust the volume, we recommend you first set a level on HD4 and then use the volume control on your device to adjust the overall level. Volume settings are flexible and there is no right or wrong so feel free to experiment to find what works for you.

Variable audio output

HD4 includes a variable full-range preamp audio output so you can connect a subwoofer or another music system. The HD4 output is adjustable so the volume level can be controlled from the HD4 volume control or your phone, computer, or tablet.

You can also wirelessly stream music wirelessly from HD4 to other systems around your house by connecting the Audioengine W3 wireless adapter to the audio output.

The HD4 system includes built-in power amplifiers so do not connect the HD4 speaker terminals directly to the speaker outputs of a stereo receiver or power amplifier. Instead use the preamp output of your stereo receiver connected to one of the audio inputs of the HD4.

Break-in period

Your speakers will sound great out of the box and will get better over time. No need to do anything else but listen to them, however, we do recommend that you give them at least 40 to 50 hours break-in time before doing any critical listening.

Cleaning

We don't recommend using any solvents or cleaners. Just wipe down the cabinets with a soft, dry cloth.

Speaker placement

Although Audioengine speakers are very forgiving with regards to where you place them, it's true that speaker location can have quite an impact on sound. There are many different recommendations for optimal speaker placement but rooms and tastes are different so it's difficult to suggest a perfect setup. We do however, suggest you feel free to experiment to see what works for you.

Here are a few basic suggestions, assuming you have some flexibility regarding placement. But no need for concern if your listening space dictates the speakers' location.

As a general rule of thumb for the best soundstage and imaging, tweeters should be at about eye-level in your most frequent listening location.

Both speakers should be at an equal distance from your primary listening position.

Placing the speakers at least 4-6 feet apart usually provides the best imaging and soundstage.

If you need to turn the speakers on their sides, position the tweeters toward the outside.

If used on a desktop for computer or multimedia speakers, the more solid the surface, the better your speakers will usually sound!
