Lightware RAP-B511 Series Quick Start Guide
This guide provides essential information for the installation and basic operation of the Lightware Room Automation Panel (RAP) series.
Important Safety Instructions
Please read the supplied safety instruction document before using the product and keep it available for future reference.
Introduction
The Room Automation Panel (RAP) is an integrated room control interface device for collaboration spaces. It features a programmable keypad, a volume knob, and a processor running Event Manager, Lightware's proprietary room control application. The RAP can initiate actions in other Lightware products, execute scheduled tasks, and send commands to or set the volume on third-party devices. Its real-time clock with Network Time Protocol and automatic daylight saving adjustment enables scheduled or recurring actions.
The RAP-B511 series is compatible with devices featuring standard RS-232, Ethernet, and GPIO ports.

Front View (RAP-B511-EU-K)
The RAP-B511 features:
- 1 Buttons: 11 configurable buttons with normal and long press detection, each with a programmable background light. They can be set to five different modes: off, low bright, high bright, slow blink, or sine pulse.
- 2 Rotary LEDs: Eight green LEDs provide feedback on the current position of the jog dial knob. LEDs illuminate sequentially as the jog dial is rotated right, indicating volume increase.
- 3 Rotary knob: A jog dial for volume control on a 16-level scale, or programmable for other control purposes by turning and clicking.
- 4 Mute LED: Indicates the mute status of the volume. Can be toggled by pressing the rotary knob.
- 5 IR detector: Built-in IR eye to receive infrared signals.
Note: The button labels are for illustration; the button caps are empty by default and can be fitted with the provided labels. All models share the same front and rear panel appearance, differing only in enclosure size and color.
Rear View (RAP-B511-EU-K)
The rear panel includes:
- 1 GPIO 4-pole Phoenix® connector: For configurable general-purpose input/output.
- 2 RS-232 port 3-pole Phoenix® connector: For bi-directional serial communication.
- 3 DC Input: For powering the device via a local adapter. Connect to the 2-pole Phoenix® connector.
- 4 Ethernet port: Two RJ45 connectors for Ethernet communication. Both are PoE-compatible; one is a PoE receiver, and the other can send PoE.
Hidden Functions (Front View)
After removing the front plate:
- 1 USB Port: USB mini-B connector for LDC access or firmware upgrade.
- 2 Reset Button: Hidden button to restart the device.
- 3 Factory default: Hidden button to reload factory default settings.
- 4 Live LED: Indicates the operational status: blinking (powered and ready), on (powered but CPU not running), off (not powered or out of operation).
Power Supply Options
The RAP-B511 series supports IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet (PoE). It can be powered in the following ways:
- 1. Local adaptor and remote power (PoE OUT): When powered by a 48V DC adapter, the RAP-B511 can send remote power via its PoE OUT RJ45 connector to other PoE-compatible devices.
- 2. Remote power injector (PoE IN): Powered remotely by a PoE-compatible power injector or switch, connected to the POE IN RJ45 connector.
- 3. Standalone Matrix or Matrix board (PoE IN): Powered by a matrix board (e.g., TPS2 I/O board with PoE extension) over a CATx (TPS) cable, connected to the POE IN RJ45 connector. The output board requires an external PSU.
Note: Ethernet communication is transmitted over the CATx cable.
Connecting Steps
- GPIO: Connect a controller/controlled device (e.g., relay box) to the GPIO port.
- RS-232: Optionally, connect a controller/controlled device (e.g., Projector) to the RS-232 port for serial communication.
- LAN: Connect the device to a LAN network for control. Connect a PoE-compatible device to the PoE OUT LAN port for remote powering and control.
- IR: The built-in infra detector is ready to receive IR signals without user intervention.
- Power: Powering on the devices is recommended as the final installation step. Refer to the Power Supply Options section for details.
Label and Cap Fixation
The button caps are supplied separately. Insert the desired label into the cap, then place the cap onto the button. Some caps may need to be rotated 90° due to different button orientations.
Mounting Options
The RAP-B511 can be mounted into various outlet boxes:
- RAP-B511-EU: Recommended for Double EU wall boxes (65mm).
- RAP-B511-UK: Recommended for Double UK wall boxes.
- RAP-B511-US: Recommended for Double US wall boxes.
Mounting into the Outlet Box:
- Gently pull apart the front plate from the RAP-B511.
- Use four screws (or two for the -EU model) over the yellow (or red) holes to align with the outlet box.
- Insert the RAP-B511 into the outlet box and align the screw holes.
- Fasten the front side of the device to the outlet box using the screws.
- Replace the front plate onto the RAP-B511.
Software Control - Using Lightware Device Controller (LDC)
Control the device from a computer via Ethernet using the Lightware Device Controller (LDC) software, available for download from www.lightware.com. Install the application on a Windows PC or macOS and connect to the device via Ethernet.
Firmware Upgrade
Use Lightware Device Updater (LDU2) to keep your device up to date. Establish an Ethernet connection, download LDU2 from www.lightware.com, and install it along with the latest firmware package.
Set Dynamic IP Address (DHCP)
- Press and hold the 2nd button for 5 seconds until all front panel LEDs blink.
- Release the button and press it three times quickly to enable DHCP.
Reset the Device
- Press and hold the 5th and 9th buttons for 10 seconds.
- Release the buttons. The mute LED will light up when the device restarts.
Restore Factory Default Settings
- Press and hold the 2nd button for 10 seconds. After 5 seconds, the front panel LEDs will blink. Continue holding the button; the LEDs will blink faster after another 5 seconds.
- Release the button and press it three times quickly to restore factory default settings, including IP address (static: 192.168.0.100), subnet mask (255.255.255.0), static gateway (192.168.0.1), DHCP (Disabled), TCP/IP port numbers (LW2: 10001, LW3: 6107), RS-232 mode (Command Injection), RS-232 control protocol (LW2), RS-232 port settings (57600 BAUD, 8, N, 1), RS-232 command injection port (8001), and IR command injection port (9001).
