Detachable Ball Bar Components
The detachable ball bar system includes the following key components:
- Receiver: The part that attaches to the vehicle's chassis.
- Ball Bar: The removable part that connects to the receiver and carries the tow ball.
- Locking Balls: Mechanisms that secure the ball bar in the receiver.
- Release Lever: Used to disengage the locking mechanism.
- Handwheel: Operated to lock/unlock the ball bar.
- Key: Used to operate the lock.
- Cover/Cap: Protects the lock mechanism.
- Plugs/Caps: Used to cover the receiver opening when the ball bar is removed.
- Markings (Red/Green): Indicate the locked/unlocked status and alignment.
- Stop Pin/Insert Bolt: Part of the locking mechanism.
Installation Procedure
Follow these steps for correct installation:
- Remove Plug: Take the plug out of the receiver tube.
- Check Ball Bar State: Normally, the ball bar is in an unlocked position when removed from storage. This is indicated by a visible gap (approx. 5 mm) between the handwheel and the ball bar, and the red marking on the handwheel aligning with the green marking on the ball bar. The ball bar can ONLY be inserted in this state.
- Pre-tensioning (If Necessary): If the locking mechanism is already engaged (locked position), it must be pre-tensioned. This is identified by the green markings aligning and the handwheel being flush against the ball bar (no gap). To pre-tension: insert the key, open the lock, pull the handwheel out (arrow a), and turn it to the stop (arrow b). The release lever will engage, and the mechanism will remain pre-tensioned.
- Insert Ball Bar: Insert the ball bar from below into the receiver tube, ensuring the stop pin aligns correctly, and push it upwards. The locking operation will then occur automatically. Keep hands away from the handwheel as it rotates during locking.
- Lock and Secure: Close the lock and always remove the key. Press the cover onto the lock.
- Attach Warning Label: Affix the provided warning label in a visible location near the receiver or inside the vehicle's luggage compartment.
Operation and Pre-Journey Checks
Before each journey, perform the following checks to ensure the detachable ball bar is correctly locked:
- Green Marking Alignment: The green marking on the handwheel must align with the green marking on the ball bar.
- Handwheel Flush: The handwheel must be flush against the ball bar with no gap.
- Lock Status: The lock must be closed, and the key withdrawn. The handwheel should not be pullable.
- Ball Bar Security: The ball bar must be fully inserted and tight in the receiver. Check by shaking it.
If any of these checks fail, repeat the installation procedure. If any check still fails, do not use the tow bar and contact the manufacturer.
Usage Notes:
- The ball bar can be easily mounted and removed by hand. Do not use tools.
- Never unlock the mechanism when a trailer or load carrier is attached.
- When driving without a trailer or load carrier, remove the ball bar and insert the plug into the receiver. This is especially important if the ball obstructs the view of the license plate or lights.
Maintenance and Care
For continued proper operation:
- Keep the ball bar and receiver clean.
- Regularly service the mechanical parts.
- Lubricate the lock mechanism with graphite only.
- Lubricate bearing points, sliding surfaces, and balls with resin-free grease or oil. This also provides additional corrosion protection.
- If cleaning the vehicle with a high-pressure washer, remove the ball bar and insert the plug. Do not expose the ball bar to high-pressure steam.
Important Notes
The detachable ball bar comes with 2 keys. Please note and keep the key number (????) for future reorders.
