FebSmart Self-Powered Technology

FebSmart Self-Powered Technology is an advanced solution for USB expansion cards, eliminating the need for an external power cable from the PC's power supply unit. The PCIe slot typically provides up to 75W (12V/6.25A). This technology incorporates a voltage transformer on each USB 3.0 port to convert 12V to 5V, delivering up to 2 Ampere of power per port. This means each USB 3.0 port can supply 5V/2A, sufficient for most high-power consuming devices (4-8W) to operate simultaneously at high speed. Safety electric circuit protectors are built into each USB 3.0 port to prevent data loss and protect storage devices.

Installation Guide: Adding USB Card to Desktop PCs

Step 1: Prepare the PC

Switch OFF the PC, unplug the computer from the main socket, and disconnect all power cords and other connected peripherals. Remove the computer case cover.

Visual Description: Images show a desktop computer tower. One image depicts removing a screw from the case. Another shows the side panel of the computer being slid off. A third image illustrates removing a slot cover from the rear of the case.

Step 2: Install the Card

Locate a correct PCI Express slot on the motherboard. Insert the USB 3.0 expansion card firmly into an empty PCI-E slot.

Visual Description: A diagram highlights a "PCIE X1 Slot" on a computer motherboard. A note indicates that the card "Works on PCIE X1,X2,X4,X8,X16 slot". An image of the expansion card is also displayed.

Step 3: Reassemble

Reattach the computer cover and reconnect all removed peripherals. Power on the desktop computer.

Visual Description: An image of the rear of a desktop computer tower shows the expansion card installed, with the new USB ports accessible.

Check if USB Card Works on Computers

After installation, check Windows "Device Manager" to verify if the system recognizes the added USB card.

Procedure:

  1. Access "Device Manager" via "This PC" (Windows 10, 8.1, 8) or "Computer" (Windows 7, Vista, XP, Server) by right-clicking and selecting "Manage".
  2. Within "Device Manager", look under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers".

Possible Outcomes:

  • A: "Unknown Device" found: This indicates the hardware is detected but requires driver installation. Proceed to the "Install Driver" section.
  • B: "Renesas USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller" found: The USB card is correctly placed and the system has loaded the driver. You can now use the added USB 3.0 ports.
  • C: Card not found: If neither A nor B is observed, the card may not be properly seated. Re-plug the USB card into the motherboard PCIE slot, or try a different active PCIE slot.

Visual Description: A flowchart illustrates the process of checking hardware in Windows Device Manager. It shows navigation paths like "This PC" -> "Manage" -> "Device Manager" -> "Universal Serial Bus Controllers", and decision points based on finding "Unknown Device" or the "Renesas USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller".

Install Driver on Desktop PCs

Note: Driver installation is typically not required for Windows 10, 8.1, and 8. Drivers are necessary for Windows Server, XP, 7, and Vista.

Step 1: Locate Driver Files

Open the provided Mini CD and navigate to the "Renesas" folder. Locate the "USB Card.exe" file. Alternatively, download the latest driver from the FebSmart website: www.febsmart.com.

Visual Description: A simple diagram shows a path: PCI Express Serial -> Renesas -> USB Card.

Step 2: Complete Driver Installation

  1. Double-click the "USB Card" executable file (represented by an icon).
  2. Wait for the installer to prepare the files.
  3. Click "Next" on the welcome screen.
  4. Accept the license agreement by clicking "Next".
  5. Click "Install" to begin the installation process.
  6. Wait for the driver installation to complete.
  7. Click "Finish" to exit the installer and start using the new USB ports.

Visual Description: A series of screenshots depict the driver installation wizard: an icon labeled "USB Card", a screen indicating "Waiting files ready to install", a "Click Next" prompt, a license agreement screen, an "Install" button, a progress indicator for "Waiting for driver installation", and a final "Click 'Finish', and start using the new USB ports" screen.

User FAQ

Q1: How many USB devices can be lighted up simultaneously?
Actually, with FebSmart Self-Powered technology, users can run high-power consumption devices on all USB ports without issues.
Q2: Why do my USB hard drive and flash drives transfer data at a low speed compared to the official speed?
