Product Overview
The Murphy Door Flush Mount French Door system offers hidden door solutions for various applications, including bookcases, dressers, gun cabinets, hampers, mirror closets, pantries, pool cue storage, shoe racks, spice racks, and wine racks. These doors are pre-assembled for easier installation.
The cabinet of the hidden door is designed to be 1-1/2” to 2” narrower than the jamb, allowing for proper function. Gaps are covered by finish casing. In-swing and out-swing casing and hinges are placed differently, and installation instructions must be followed for the selected door swing. Some wall finishing work is required where the wall meets the jamb. For best results, prep the wall with a straight and clean sheetrock edge.

Before You Begin Assembly
PLEASE READ INSTRUCTIONS FULLY BEFORE YOU BEGIN ASSEMBLY
01 Storage
If you are not installing the door upon receipt, keep it standing level on its base or lay it flat. DO NOT lean it against a wall on its edge.
02 Proper Handling
Take the door/cabinet out of the jamb and carry the cabinet and jamb separately. DO NOT carry or lift the cabinet by the face frame. The doors are heavy; handle with care. Support the entire door when carrying and lifting. A minimum of two persons is recommended.
Murphy Door cannot be responsible for dropped door damage.
03 Content Check
Verify that you have all parts prior to starting the installation or hiring a contractor. Test the hinge pin to ensure it works properly: hold the pin while pushing the center button. The two ball bearings should retract slightly. If they do not retract, spray with dry lube. Re-engage the center button several times to check functionality. The pin should not be used if not working correctly.
04 Painting/Staining
If finishing your door with paint or stain, it should be done within 10 days to seal the wood and minimize climate differences. Murphy Door cannot offer a warranty against sagging or warping on unfinished doors. Use care when applying, keeping pre-drilled holes free of excess paint or stain for easier assembly. DO NOT use water-based paints; commercial-grade furniture paints and stains are required. Always perform a sample test on the sides of the jamb that will be placed against the wall, as these areas will not be visible once installed. Follow the paint or stain manufacturer's instructions.
Uninstalling Your Door
Out-swing Door
Take pressure off the door. The pin must be vertical and the hinge holes aligned. If there is too much friction, the pin may not slip out easily. Locate the hinge pin in the top of the cabinet through a 1” hole. Use the hinge pin removal tool around the pin and carefully pull it down while wiggling. Once the top pin is out, lift the door off the bottom hinge.
In-swing Door
Take pressure off the door. The pin is mounted to the side of the door. Push the button on the pin while pulling it down and out, wiggling as needed. Once the top pin is out, lift the door off the bottom hinge.
If the hinge pin removal tool is lost, it can be ordered from murphydoor.com.
Installation Tips
Framing
Rough openings should be framed with 2"x 4" or 2"x6" studs. Ensure studs are parallel (measure top, middle, and bottom of the jamb rough opening) and square (use a carpenter's square in all four corners). Improper framing may cause the Murphy Door to not function properly or appear bowed. For metal studs, replace the included 3” screws with (8) 3” self-tapping screws.
Threshold
For best results, install the door on a level surface. DO NOT install the bottom threshold over carpeting, as carpet affects leveling and door function. If shimming the threshold is necessary, use shims that are the width of the threshold and span the entire length of the space needing adjustment.
Jamb
DO NOT over or under-tighten the jamb. Ensure the jamb is properly shimmed, level, and square with the threshold and header. An out-of-square jamb may cause improper door function or sagging.
Hinge Pin Installation
On out-swing doors, ensure the pin goes up through the top of the door and both hinges. DO NOT insert the pin from the top down. Properly installed, the pin will countersink, and the button will be fully extended (not depressed). If it protrudes below the header, it is not properly seated and may fail, causing the door to fall. Confirm the hinge pin is seated and goes through both hinges.
Casing (aka Trim)
Verify the door opens, closes, and swings properly before installing casing. The casing is designed so the top casing extends past the side casings by 1-1/2” on each side. Attach vertical casing first, then the top casing, to facilitate centering the top casing.
Finishing
Ensure the door functions correctly before finishing the wall. Caulk, mud, or tape to finish the edge where the wall meets the jamb.

Diagram Description (Page 4):
The page displays diagrams illustrating the Jamb components (Jamb Side, Jamb Top, Jamb Bottom/Threshold), Shelving components (Adjustable Shelf), and Casing components (Casing Side, Casing Center, Casing Top). It also lists required tools and hardware with corresponding labels (D, E, F, L, N, O, P, Q).
Step 1 shows aligning the jamb bottom threshold and jamb side on a flat surface, ensuring they are flush and hinges face inward. It instructs to pre-drill, countersink, and install two 7x50mm confirmat screws (E) at the corner.
Step 2 instructs to repeat the process for securing and squaring all corners of the door jamb.
Installation Steps
Step 3: Place Jamb in Rough Opening
Place the door jamb into the rough opening. The bottom jamb threshold should extend into the room toward the back of the bookcase.
Step 4: Level Jamb
It is critical that the bottom threshold and jamb sides are level. If the door jamb is not level and plumb, the door will not swing and close properly. Note: The bottom threshold SHOULD NOT be installed over carpeting, as carpet affects leveling and prevents proper door function.
Step 5: Pre-drill Jamb Holes
Using a 1/8" drill bit, pre-drill and countersink three holes into each side of the door jamb: 2" from the top, 2" from the bottom, and one in the middle. Next, pre-drill and countersink two holes into the jamb top, 6" from the right and left sides.
Step 6: Secure Jamb
Using shims where needed, install (8) 3" screws (F), ensuring the top and sides of the jamb are level. Note: The included screws are for wood frames. If installing into a steel frame, replace them with (8) 3" self-tapping screws.
Step 7: Install Bookcase into Jamb
Place the right bookcase into the door jamb. Ensure the bottom hinge sits in the silver thrust bearing.
Step 8: Install Hinge Pins (In-swing/Out-swing)
In-swing: Press down the ball lock of the hinge pin (N) to retract the (2) top pins. Align the holes of the top jamb hinge and top hinge plate, then insert the pin, ensuring it locks into place. Repeat for the second bookcase assembly.
Out-swing: The hinge pins install from the front of the bookcase. When properly installed and locked, the pins will appear countersunk.
Step 9: Position Poly Wedges
Place the poly wedges (O) where the friction catch carriage bolt will go when the door is closed. Ensure the door is flush and mark the location with a pencil or tape.
Step 10: Secure Poly Wedges
Remove the sticker from the back of the poly wedge and place it in the marked location. The wedge tapers should face inward for an in-swing door and outward for an out-swing door. Secure with (4) Flat Head Phillips Sharp Point 3/4" Screws (L).
Step 11: Tighten Carriage Bolt
With the door assembly in place, tighten the carriage bolt with an adjustable wrench just enough to catch on the poly wedge. Repeat steps 7-11 to install the second bookcase carriage.
Step 12: Install Shelves
Add (2) shelf pins (P) where desired and (2) shelf pins directly across from them. Slide the shelf into place onto the installed shelf pins. Repeat for the remaining shelves as desired.
Steps 13 & 14: Install In-swing Casing
Step 13 (Side Casing): Align the clips in the side casing and on the jamb. Press firmly into place. The bottom edge of each side casing piece has a small, drilled hole on the back side near the bottom clip pocket. The clip pockets will be closer to the inner edge of the casing. The top of the side casings should sit about 1/2" below the top of the door. If higher, firmly grip the side casing and slide it down until it stops. Note: Due to construction variances, you may need to trim one end of the side casing to achieve correct positioning. Always trim from the bottom edge if necessary.
Step 14 (Top Casing): Align the clips in the top casing similarly to the side casing and press firmly into place. Adjust the top and side casing until they sit flush against each other and are square.
Steps 15-17: Install In-swing Center Casing
Step 15: Using a 1/8" drill bit, pre-drill five holes into either the left face frame side of the right bookcase or the right face frame side of the left bookcase. The center casing attaches to the drilled frame side.
Step 16: Run a bead of glue down the face frame side, avoiding drilled holes. Position the center casing and press firmly into place.
Step 17: Secure the center casing to the face frame using (5) 1-1/4" truss head screws (D), ensuring not to screw through the front of the casing. Before closing the bookcase doors, ensure the attached casing does not interfere. After attaching the center casing, remove the top and side casing by sliding them up 7mm to release the clips. Run a bead of glue on the edge of the top and right-side jambs, then re-apply the casing. Adjust the top and side casing for a uniform gap with the door and allow glue to dry overnight.
Steps 18-20: Install Out-swing Casing
The following steps detail installing casing for an out-swing door.
Step 19 (Side Casing): Align the clips in the side casing and on the jamb. Press firmly into place. The bottom edge of each side casing piece has a small, drilled hole on the back side near the bottom clip pocket. The clip pockets will be closer to the inner edge of the casing. The top of the side casings should sit about 1/16" above the top of the door. If higher, firmly grip the side casing and slide it down until it stops. Note: Due to construction variances, you may need to trim one end of the side casing to achieve correct positioning. Always trim from the bottom edge if necessary.
Step 20 (Top Casing): Align the clips in the top casing similarly to the side casing and press firmly into place. Adjust the top and side casing until they sit flush against each other and the gap between the top casing and the top of the door is uniform.
Steps 21-23: Install Out-swing Center Casing
Step 21: Using a 1/8" drill bit, pre-drill and countersink five holes into either the left face frame side of the right bookcase or the right face frame side of the left bookcase. The center casing attaches to the drilled frame side.
Step 22: Run a bead of glue down the face frame of the door, avoiding drilled holes, to strengthen the center casing. Firmly press the center casing into place. Test the door swing prior to screwing in to ensure it doesn't make contact with the floor.
Step 23: Secure the center casing to the face frame using (5) 1-1/4" truss head screws (D), ensuring not to drill through the front of the casing. After attaching the center casing, remove the top and side casing by sliding them up 7mm to release the clips. Run a bead of glue on the edge of the top and right-side jambs, then re-apply the casing. Adjust the top and side casing for a uniform gap with the door and allow glue to dry overnight.
