Koolance INS-FM17N, INS-FM18 Coolant Flow Meters
Version 1.3
Introduction
Koolance INS-FM17N and INS-FM18 flow meters utilize a normally-open magnetic reed contact switch that responds to internal impeller rotation.
These flow meters should not be directly connected to high-power outputs such as 12VDC fan headers or similar controllers. If connecting to a custom circuit, the intended current range is 50-100mA. A signal graph is provided.
Specifications
- Flow Rate Range: 1.0 - 15 LPM (0.26 - 4 GPM)
- Fluid Temperature Range: 0 - 70 °C (32 - 158 °F)
Important Notes
Be sure to install the flow meter in the correct liquid direction. This is indicated by the [direction arrow] on the flow meter's body. Residual air pockets in the flow meter will not result in an accurate reading.
Visual Description: A clear, cylindrical coolant flow meter is shown. A red impeller is visible inside, indicating fluid flow. A black arrow on the exterior of the meter points in the direction of correct fluid flow.
Frequency Adapter
An optional Koolance power adapter, model ADT-FM03, can be used to multiply the flow meter impeller signal. This allows most fan detection software, including many computer BIOS programs, to interpret the flow meter's signal as a 12VDC fan RPM signal. The multiplied RPM signal enables 3rd-party software to log or trigger an alarm event based on the flow meter impeller's activity.
With the ADT-FM03, the flow meter's reported "RPMs" represent an approximate coolant flow rate in mL/min, not actual revolutions. It is important to note that 3rd-party software and BIOS programs must be configured properly for the flow meter to initiate a safety procedure.
The connections and functions for the ADT-FM03 are illustrated below.
Diagram Description: The illustration shows a typical setup for the Koolance flow meter with the ADT-FM03 adapter. It depicts a Coolant Flow Switch (compatible with 10-13mm or 6mm ID Tubing), the Flow Meter itself, a 12VDC power supply connection, and a connection for a "Fan" RPM signal output.
Flow Rate Graph
The graph displays the relationship between flow rate (in Liters Per Minute - LPM) and frequency (in Hertz - Hz) for the Koolance flow meters. Two lines are plotted, representing different internal diameters (I.D.) of the nozzle:
- 10mm Nozzle (Blue Line): The relationship is approximated by the equation LPM = 0.307 X Hz.
- 6mm Nozzle (Red Line): The relationship is approximated by the equation LPM = 0.28 X Hz.
The X-axis represents Frequency (Hz) from 0 to 35, and the Y-axis represents Flow Rate (LPM) from 0 to 10.
