KOLOSSOS: INSTALLATION MANUAL
INSTALLING KOLOSSOS FOR Shimano Dura Ace R9100/R9200 & Ultegra R8000/R8100
This manual provides instructions for installing the KOGEL Kolossos pulley cage system onto Shimano Dura Ace R9200, R9100, Ultegra R8100, and R8000 rear derailleurs. The 12-speed Kolossos cages are backwards compatible with 11-speed drivetrains but not forwards compatible with 12-speed. The installation procedure is the same for both mechanical and Di2 derailleurs and fits both short (SS) and medium (GS) cage lengths.
Tools Needed for This Installation
- Torx T10 wrench
- 2mm allen wrench
- Phillips screwdriver
- Chain tool
- Light grease
- New chain (the Kolossos cage requires a few extra links compared to the stock setup)
Note: Use the provided seal for R9200 derailleurs or if the stock seal leaves an excessive gap.
Installation Steps
Step 1: Remove the Chain
With the bike securely mounted in a stand, remove the bicycle chain.

Step 2: Remove the Rear Wheel
Remove the rear wheel from the bicycle.
[Image Description: A person wearing black gloves is shown removing the rear wheel from a bicycle frame.]
Step 3: Shift Derailleur
Shift the rear derailleur to the lowest gear (largest cog position).
[Image Description: Close-up of a bicycle rear derailleur shifted to its largest cog on the cassette.]
Step 4: Remove Stop Pin
Remove the stop pin using a Phillips screwdriver.
[Image Description: A hand wearing a black glove uses a Phillips screwdriver to remove a small pin from the derailleur mechanism.]
Step 5: Release Spring Tension
Carefully allow the derailleur cage to rotate forward to release the spring tension.
[Image Description: The derailleur cage is shown rotating forward, away from the cassette, to relieve spring tension.]
Step 6: Remove Retention Pin
Remove the retention pin using a Torx T10 wrench. Be cautious: this bolt is made of a mix of aluminum and cheese (a figurative description for its delicate nature) and is factory installed with Loctite.
[Image Description: A hand wearing a black glove uses a Torx T10 wrench to loosen and remove a retention pin from the derailleur body.]
Step 7: Keep Bolt Safe
Keep the removed bolt in sight, as it will be used later in the installation.
[Image Description: A small bolt, likely the retention pin bolt, is held between the thumb and forefinger of a gloved hand, indicating it should be kept safe.]
Step 8: Remove Cage
Remove the derailleur cage from the derailleur body. Hold onto the spring and seal, as they will be reused.

Step 9: Remove Stop Pin (Again)
Remove the stop pin using a 2mm allen wrench. This is a very small part, so be careful not to lose it.
[Image Description: A hand wearing a black glove uses a 2mm allen wrench to remove a tiny stop pin from the Kolossos cage assembly.]
Step 10: Grease Spring
Apply a light coat of grease to the spring.
[Image Description: A gloved finger is applying a small amount of light grease to the coil spring of the derailleur.]
Step 11: Install Spring and Seal
Install the spring and seal onto the Kolossos cage. Note: There are three holes for adjusting spring tension. Start with the middle hole to test your setup.
- Use the right side hole for higher tension, suitable for rough roads or off-road use.
- Use the left side hole for less tension and lower friction, recommended for riding on smooth roads.
[Image Description: The KOGEL Kolossos cage is shown with the spring and seal being installed. Three distinct holes for attaching the spring are visible on the cage body.]
Step 12: Install Kolossos Cage
Install the Kolossos cage onto the derailleur body. Ensure the fragile seal is correctly aligned.
[Image Description: The KOGEL Kolossos cage is being mounted onto the derailleur body. A gloved hand is carefully aligning the seal before securing the cage.]
Step 13: Load Spring Tension
Rotate the cage backwards to load the spring tension. Also, check that the cage moves freely.
[Image Description: The derailleur cage is being rotated backward to tension the spring. A gloved hand is shown manipulating the cage, and its free movement is being checked.]
Step 14: Check Tension and Friction
You should feel only the spring tension, with no friction.
[Image Description: The fully installed KOGEL Kolossos cage on the rear derailleur is shown. The image emphasizes the spring tension and smooth operation of the cage.]
Step 15: Reinstall Stop Pin
Reinstall the stop pin. Use the left side threaded hole for short cage derailleurs and the right side hole for medium cage derailleurs.
[Image Description: A hand wearing a black glove is reinserting the stop pin into the derailleur. The image highlights the left hole for short cages and the right hole for medium cages.]
Step 16: Torque Bolt
Torque the relevant bolt to less than 1 Nm.
[Image Description: A torque wrench is shown near the cage bolt, indicating a precise torque setting is required (less than 1 Nm).]
Step 17: Reinstall Retention Pin
Reinstall the retention pin using a Torx T10 wrench. Torque: 1-2 Nm.
[Image Description: A Torx T10 wrench is used to reinstall the retention pin into the derailleur, with a torque specification of 1-2 Nm.]
Step 18: Adjust Derailleur Settings
Readjust the B-tension, upper and lower limits, and cable tension as you would for a regular derailleur installation. Once these adjustments are complete, the installation is finished.
[Image Description: A gloved hand is shown adjusting the B-tension screw on the rear derailleur as a final step.]
