The CR: 511E Acoust ic Calibrat or provides a cost effect ive yet accurat e m eans of achieving this requirem ent. The CR: 511E unit can be used for all m icrophones suit able for t his kind of calibrat ion. I t has t he abilit y t o accept different cavit y adapt ors. The CR: 511E has a nom inal cavit y diam et er of 1.125 inches. A st andard QC: 3 adapt or allows t he unit t o be used wit h a ½ inch m icrophone. Ot her adapt ors are available. The approval by t he Germ an t est office PTB is valid for t he 1/ 2 inch adapt or. The CR: 511E provides t wo reference levels of 94dB( 1 Pa) and 104 dB ( 3.16 Pa) . I t is therefore possible to j udge the linearit y of t he instrum ent and to calibrate at high background noises. The frequency is 1000 Hz, t herefore t he frequency weight ing of t he inst rum ent has no influence on the accuracy of the calibrat ion. The CR: 511E Acoust ic Calibrat or m eet s t he requirem ent s of I EC 942, it corresponds t o t ype 1L, which m eans, it is t ype 1 if t he correct ion values for t he air pressure are observed. CR: 511E Acoust ic Caliibrat or User Manual Page 5 Operation The CR: 511E acoust ic calibrat or has provision for t he calibr at ion of a var iet y of m icrophones of various diam et ers. The nom inal cavit y has a diam et er of 1.125 inches. A st andard QC: 3 adapt or allows t he unit t o be used wit h a ½ inch m icrophone. Ot her adaptors are available for 1 inch, 1/ 4 inches, 20 m m and 10 m m . The CR: 511E unit is supplied w it h one adapt or as st andard. Typically t his is t he QC: 3 adapt or for ½ " m icrophones. The sound pressure generat ed by t he calibrat ors are 94dB and 104dB. However, when calibrating a m icrophone which is to be used for free field m easurem ents, a sm all correction m ay be necessary to com pensate for the difference between the m icrophone's free field response at 'zero degrees' or 'head-on' incidence and t he pressure level generat ed by t he calibrat or. The correct ion is t ypically - 0.3dB for ½ inch m icrophones ( m aking the effect ive calibrat ion level 93.7dB) . A second correct ion is required if t he barom et ric pressure is not 1013 hPa. A t able shows t he correct ion values for t he st andard m icrophones of Cir rus Research plc I n order t o adapt different m icrophones t o t he CR: 511E at t he accuracy st at ed t he adapt ors available from Cirrus Research plc should be used. For half inch m icrophones t he t ype Q3 is available, wit h t his adapt or t he calibrat or can be cert ified officially. Calibrating a Sound Level Meter Ensure t hat t he bat t eries in bot h t he calibr at or and t he Sound Level Met er are in good condit ion. Do not at t em pt t o calibrat e t he Sound Level Met er if bat t ery levels are low. Push t he m icrophone of t he Sound Level Met er, wit h t he appropr iat e adapt or if required, int o t he cavit y at t he end of t he calibrat or. Ensure t he m icrophone is fully insert ed int o t he cavit y and is past t he `O' ring seal. The m icrophone should be parallel to the body of the calibrator. Turn on t he calibrat or and select t he reference level required. I n m ost sit uat ions, t his will be 94dB, alt hough t he CR: 511E unit s provide an addit ional 104dB reference level. Check which level t he Sound Level Met er is set t o accept during calibrat ion. Most m odern Sound Level Met ers have elect ronic calibrat ion w it h t he level adj ust ed autom atically. Adj ust t he Sound Level Met er t o t he correct level where applicable. There are several fact ors t o be considered when correct ing t he value generat ed t he calibrat or. These are: 1. A correction for the type of m icrophone capsule. 2. A correct ion for any changes in barom et ric pressure from 1013m Bar ( 1013 hPa) . I n m ost sit uat ions, t he Sound Level Met er will be fit t ed w it h a fr ee field m icrophone. The correct ion required for t he specific m icr ophone fit t ed t o t he Sound Level Met er will be given in the operation m anual for that instrum ent. However, the MK: 215 and Page 6 CR: 511E Acoust ic Caliibrat or User Manual MK: 224 m icrophone capsules which are fit t ed t o t he m aj orit y of Cirrus Research Sound Level Met ers have a correct ion of - 0.3dB w hen used wit h t he CR: 511E. The CR: 511E Acoust ic Calibrat or is designed t o be used m ainly w it h ½ " Microphone Capsules. CR: 511E Acoust ic Caliibrat or User Manual Page 7 Changing the Battery The CR: 511E acoust ic calibrat or uses a single 9v bat t ery. This t ype of bat t ery is known as 6F22 or NEDA 1604. I t is also com m only known as PP3. 1. Put a sm all rod, usually a screwdr iver, t hrough t he t wo holes in t he end cap and gently pull the cap from the body. 2. Pull out t he end plat e which has t he sw it ch and bat t ery holder at t ached. 3. The bat t ery, t ype 6F22 ( PP3) can now be eased out of it s holder and replaced. Make SURE you check t he correct polar it y of t he bat t ery, which clips int o t he press studs on the battery holder. Battery type One bat t ery t ype 6F22 is used. This is called NEDA 1604 in t he USA and part s of Asia. I t is oft en called 'PP3' in t he UK and t he old Com m onwealt h. The bat t ery should preferably be an alkaline bat t ery, not an ordinary dry cell. Whilst an ordinary cell is adequate for operation, the low price of long life batteries m akes their use sensible. A long life battery is not only m ore efficient, but is less prone to leak and dam age the calibrat or. The m at erial of t he end ring and cavit y is easily eat en away by bat t ery leakage. The bat t ery is 9 volt s when new and will operat e t he calibrat or down t o about 6 volts. Page 8 CR: 511E Acoust ic Caliibrat or User Manual Performance Information. Variation with Temperature. Every new product is provided with a 12-month no-quibble warranty. This covers everything we provide against failure, poor workmanship and accidental damage. NB - European Union law states a product has to be fit for purpose for 24 months after purchase. This two-year period covers failure and poor workmanship only. 2. If the product is calibrated by Cirrus Research or an authorised calibration and service centre, then the initial 12-month warranty is extended by a further 12 months, with the same conditions, for up to 15 years in total. 3. If a product has not been calibrated annually by Cirrus Research or an authorised calibration and service centre, then you may buy back into the warranty scheme for a small fee, plus the cost of calibration. This can only be done once during the life of the product. 4. If a microphone capsule fails under warranty and is physically damaged, we will replace it with a refurbished capsule. 5. If you don't wish to have a refurbished capsule, then you can trade in your damaged capsule for a new one, which will incur a fee.
