modLight Lite

The modLight Lite module comes with a male connector, a female connector, and these instructions.

Wiring Diagram:

The module connects to three wires from your car's wiring harness: direct 12V, ground (GND), and KBUS.

• PIN 1 (BROWN): Connect to Ground (GND) from the car's wire harness. For BMW, this is typically brown. Use a voltmeter to confirm before installation.
• PIN 2 (RED): Connect to constant (permanent, direct) 12V from the car's wire harness. For BMW, this is usually red-green or red-white. Use a voltmeter to confirm before installation.
• PIN 3 (WHITE): Connect to the KBUS wire of your BMW. This is typically a white-red wire with yellow dots.

These wires can be found in various locations within the car, such as the radio connector, CD changer connector, dashboard connectors, or LCM module connectors.

After connecting the female connector to the correct wires, confirm the voltage between the RED and BROWN wires of the modLight's connector. Then, connect it to the modLight Lite module. A correct connection will be indicated by the red and green indicators blinking for approximately 3 seconds.

User Interface:

The module features a user interface with 2 buttons and 2 LED indicators for programming functions and settings:

• Right Button: "Up" or "Scroll" – moves to the next option.
• Left Button: "Enter" – selects or confirms a selection.

Example: Activating Comfort Turn Signals (Function 3, Option 4):

1. Press the right button 3 times to select Function 3. The green LED will briefly illuminate with each press.
2. Press the left button (Enter) once to confirm the selection of Function 3.
3. Press the right button 4 times to select Option 4.
4. Press the left button (Enter) once to confirm Option 4.
5. The red LED will light up, and the green LED will count the selected function. The red LED will then turn off, and the green LED will count the selected option.
6. If no button is pressed for more than 4 seconds, the red LED will blink several times, indicating the module has exited the menu.

The modLight Lite module offers numerous customizable functions. Below is a summary of key functions:

Function 1: Automatic Locking (18 km/h)

• Option 1: ON (car locks automatically at 18 km/h)
• Option 3: OFF (default)
• Option 5: Resets modLight Lite to factory defaults. LEDs blink for 4 seconds to confirm reset.

Note: This function is recommended if your car cannot be coded for this feature via diagnostic equipment. Self-locking on newer BMWs (after 1999) might not be well-implemented via KBUS.

Function 2: Automatic Unlocking (Engine Off)

• Option 1: Unlocks when the key is turned to position 1 (ACC) or position 0 (OFF).
• Option 3: Does not unlock (default).
• Option 4: Unlocks when the key is turned to position 1 (ACC).

Note: Option 4 is for cars where the GM module sends a zeroing message on KBUS at intervals, which could cause random unlocking with Option 1.

Function 3: Comfort Turn Signals (Triple Blinker)

• Option 1, 3: OFF
• Option 4: Triple blinker (default)
• Option 5: Triple blinker 520ms
• Option 6: Triple blinker 630ms

Function 4: Folding/Unfolding Mirrors (Remote Control)

• Options available for E46/E83 (version 1 & 2), E39, E53.

Note: Mirror folding/unfolding via remote is only possible on cars with folding mirrors and power seats with memory. If it doesn't work, try different settings for Function 21.

Function 5: Automatic Folding of Side Mirrors

• Option 1: Long press of the lock button on the remote control.
• Option 2: Double press of the lock button on the remote control.
• Option 3: OFF (default).
• Option 4: Single press of the lock button.

Function 6: Lights via Long Press of Lock Button

• Option 1: Follow me home (high beams, fogs, brake lights) (default).
• Option 2: modLight cycle 1.
• Option 4: modLight cycle 2.
• Option 5: Webasto heater ON.
• Option 6: modLight cycle 3.
• Option 7: Ventilation ON.
• Option 8: Follow me home 2 (high beams, fog lamps, rear standing lights for newer LCMs).

Note: Options 5 & 7 work only with K-BUS controlled heaters/ventilation.

Function 7: Lights via Double Press of Lock Button

• Similar options to Function 6 are available.

Function 8: GM Module Version

• Option 1: Old GM module (no signals from lock/unlock buttons via KBUS/IBUS). Double press lock function is not possible.
• Option 3: New GM module (default) (signals available for remote control buttons).

Note: If functions related to locking/unlocking do not work, select Option 1 or ensure you have a newer GM module.

Function 9: Single Press Lock (Goodbye Lights)

• Options include Sidelights (default), high beams + reverse + fog lamps, and modLight cycles.

Function 10: Single Press Unlock (Welcome Lights)

• Options include Sidelights (default), high beams + reverse + fog lamps, and modLight cycles.

Note: Functions 14 and 15 allow adding fog lamps or low-beam lights to sidelights.

Function 11: Comfort Turn Signals Blinks

• Options for 3, 4 (default), 5, or 6 blinks. Used only if Function 3 is set to Triple blinker.

Function 12 & 13: Duration of Single Press Lock/Unlock Cycles

• Options for durations from 10 to 25 seconds.

Function 14 & 15: Additional Lights for Single Press Lock/Unlock Cycles

• Options include OFF, Fog lamps (front) (E46 only), and dipped-beam headlamps.

Function 16: Duration of 'Follow Me Home' Cycle

• Options for durations from 10 to 25 seconds.

Function 17: Automatic Restart of modLight Lite Module

• Options for automatic restarts every 1, 2, 8, 24, or 48 hours after the last KBUS activity. Option 3 is OFF (default).

Function 19: KBUS Communication Version

• Options for Version 1, 2 (default), or 3. Test which version works best for "Triple blinker" function.

Function 20: "Welcome Lights" Cycle on Wake Up/Restart

• Option 1: ON.
• Option 2: OFF (default).

Function 21: Folding/Unfolding Mirrors Normal Operation Reversed

• Option 1: Reversed.
• Option 2: Normal (default).

Note: Use Option 1 if E46/E83 GM modules send reversed telegrams for mirror folding/unfolding.

Function 22: Repetition of modLight Light Cycles

• Allows programming the number of cycle repetitions from 1 to 20.

Function 24: Webasto Heater Turn Off

• Option 1: Turn off heater (default).
• Option 2: No turning off when key is in position 2.

Function 25: Instrument Cluster Brightness and Headlights Level Check

• Option 1: Yes (default).
• Option 3: No (leaves levels at MAX).

Before Plugging In: Please use a voltmeter or another measuring tool to confirm the power supply wires.

Professional Installation: It is recommended that all additional modules, including modLight Lite, be installed by a professional.

Connection: Do not connect the module in any way other than described in these instructions.
