Operation
Location: Operate the generator outdoors, at least 20 ft. (6 m) from occupied spaces, with exhaust pointed away. Install battery-operated carbon monoxide alarms indoors. Never run the generator in enclosed areas.
Starting the Generator:
- Ensure the generator is in a safe operating location.
- Disconnect all electrical loads.
- Turn the fuel valve to the "ON" (I) position.
- Flip the engine switch to the "RUN" (I) position.
- Flip the battery switch to the "ON" (I) position.
- Move the choke lever to the “CHOKE” position (for recoil start).
- Recoil Start: Pull the starter cord slowly until resistance is felt, then pull rapidly.
- Electric Start: Flip the engine switch to the START (II) position for a few seconds, then release.
- Once the engine starts and warms up, move the choke lever to the “RUN” position.
- Remote Start: Push and release the "START" button on the remote control.
- Allow the generator to run at no load for a few minutes to stabilize before connecting loads.
Connecting Electrical Loads:
- Ensure circuit breakers are in the closed (on) position.
- Start the generator with no load attached.
- Allow the engine to run for several minutes to stabilize.
- Plug in and turn on the item with the largest load first.
- Allow the engine to stabilize, then plug in and turn on the next item. Repeat for additional items.
- Use only grounded cords marked for outdoor use, rated for your loads. Refer to the extension cord gauge chart for proper sizing.
- Use a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) in any damp or highly conductive area.
- Protect sensitive electronic equipment from voltage fluctuations with a plug-in surge suppressor.
Stopping the Generator:
- Turn off and remove all electrical loads.
- Allow the generator to run at no-load for one minute to stabilize internal temperatures.
- Remote Start: Push and release the "STOP" button on the remote control. The generator will run for a 15-second cool-down cycle.
- Electric/Recoil Start: Flip the engine switch to “OFF” (O) position.
- Flip the battery switch to "OFF" (O) position to prevent battery drain.
- Turn the fuel valve to the “OFF” (O) position.
CO Alert™™ Shutdown System: The generator will automatically shut down if harmful levels of carbon monoxide accumulate or a CO Alert fault occurs. The indicator light will blink. CO Alert does not replace carbon monoxide alarms.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for performance and longevity. Consult the Maintenance Schedule for specific intervals.
General Recommendations:
- Once a year, clean or replace the spark plug and replace the air filter.
- Ensure the generator is kept clean and dry.
- Do not expose the unit to excessive dust, dirt, moisture, or corrosive vapors.
Engine Oil:
- Change engine oil every 100 hours (or after 25 hours for a new engine).
- Use FIRMAN SAE 10W-30 API SJ oil or equivalent.
- Check oil level before each use or at least every 8 hours of operation.
Air Filter:
- Remove, wash the foam element with liquid detergent and water, squeeze dry.
- Saturate with clean engine oil and squeeze out excess.
- Reinstall the clean or new air filter element.
Spark Plug:
- Inspect and clean the spark plug with a wire brush. Replace if damaged.
- Adjust the electrode gap to 0.028 - 0.031 in. (0.7 - 0.8 mm).
- Ensure proper installation and tightening.
Muffler and Spark Arrester:
- Inspect the muffler for cracks or damage.
- Clean or replace the spark arrester screen as needed. Failure to do so may result in decreased engine performance.
- WARNING: Contact with the muffler area can cause burns. Do not touch hot parts.
Battery:
- The battery powers the starter and control module.
- It is equipped with an automatic charging circuit that operates when the engine is running.
- For infrequent use, connect to a trickle charger or battery maintainer.
Long Term Storage:
- Treat any stored fuel with fuel stabilizer.
- If storing with fuel, run the engine for 5-10 minutes to circulate treated fuel.
- Alternatively, drain the fuel tank, fuel lines, and carburetor by running the engine until it stops from lack of fuel.
- Turn the fuel valve to the "OFF" position.
- Allow the generator to cool before storage.
- Change the oil.
- Remove the spark plug, pour about one teaspoon of engine oil into the cylinder, and slowly pull the recoil starter to distribute the oil. Reinstall the spark plug.
- Cover the generator and store in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight and ignition sources.
