Important safety information.
Read this and other device guides carefully. Failure to follow recommendations may be dangerous or violate the law. Aeotec Limited, its manufacturer, importer, distributor, and reseller are not responsible for any loss or damage resulting from non-compliance with instructions.
- Keep the product and batteries away from open flames and extreme heat. Avoid direct sunlight or heat exposure.
- Remove batteries from products being stored. Leaking batteries can damage the appliance.
- Do not use rechargeable batteries.
- Ensure correct polarity when inserting batteries. Improper battery use may damage the product.
The Door / Window Sensor 7 is intended for indoor use in dry locations only. Do not use in damp, moist, or wet locations. It contains small parts; keep away from children.
Quick Start
Pre-Installation of Door / Window Sensor 7.
- Open the cover by pressing the clip on the side and pulling the cover upwards.
- Insert a fresh 1 * 1/2 AA battery, paying attention to the polarity.
Illustration: A hand is shown pressing a clip on the side of the sensor unit to open its cover. A separate illustration shows a battery being inserted into the sensor, highlighting the need to observe polarity.
Install your Door / Window Sensor 7.
The sensor can be mounted on either the moving part or the fixed part of a door or window. Mounting can be done using the included tape (peel off the protection foil) or by using two screws through the holes inside the battery compartment.
For tilt detection on windows (excluding roof windows), the sensor device must be placed on the moving part of the window, and the magnet on the window frame. The sensor comes with two types of magnets.
Magnet Placement and Tilt Function
Standard Magnet: The standard magnet is covered by a plastic part and is mountable beside the sensor. Ensure the two indicating lines on the sensor enclosure and magnet are opposite each other. The illustration shows the correct position of the magnet and sensor body.
Slim Magnet: A slim, "naked" magnet can be mounted behind the sensor if the sensor body is placed on the side of a window.
Tilt Function: To use the tilting function, the opening angle of the window must be at least 5° or greater.
Illustration: A diagram shows the standard magnet aligned with the sensor, with alignment marks. Another diagram shows the slim magnet behind the sensor. An arc indicates a minimum tilt angle of 5 degrees.
For German-style windows where the window sits on top of the frame, mounting on the side of the window is recommended. If tilt detection is not used, the sensor can be placed anywhere on the door or window. For tilt detection, the sensor should be placed on the upper side of the window.
Installation of the Flat Magnet
When installing the flat magnet in a hidden location, ensure it is placed on the longer side, aligned with the mark on the Door / Window Sensor 7.
Illustration: Diagrams show correct and incorrect placements of the flat magnet relative to the sensor unit, with alignment marks.
Adding your Door / Window Sensor 7 to Z-Wave network.
SmartStart Inclusion.
This method is available if your Z-Wave gateway/controller/app supports SmartStart.
- Open your Z-Wave gateway/controller/app.
- Select SmartStart inclusion.
- Scan the QR code located on the Door/Window Sensor 7.
- Within 10 minutes of powering the sensor, it will automatically be included into your Z-Wave gateway/controller/hub.
Classic Inclusion
- Set your Z-Wave controller into pairing mode.
- Triple-click the tamper switch on the Door / Window Sensor 7. The LED will blink five times.
- After inclusion is complete, the LED will light up once before turning off.
- Close the cover.
Note: Closing the cover is crucial. If the housing is not closed, the sensor remains permanently awake. It enters the idle state only when the cover is closed.
Illustration: A diagram shows a battery with positive (+) and negative (-) terminals, emphasizing correct insertion.
Functions of Door / Window Sensor 7.
Open/Close
Once installed, the sensor reports "open" and "close" status changes to a central Z-Wave controller via notification commands. This function utilizes the Notification Report.
Tilt detection
The tilt detection reports how a window is opened using the "binary sensor - tilt-type" command class. If the window is closed or opened without tilting, the sensor reports "Off". If the window is tilted, it reports "On". The angle of inclination must be at least 5°.
- Tilt Sensor uses Binary Sensor Report.
- Tilt Sensor reports "Open" when the window is opened, moving, and tilted simultaneously.
When the window is closed, both the Tilt Sensor and Window access report "CLOSED" (Binary Sensor Report = 0x00). When the window is open, the Tilt Sensor and Window access report "OPEN" (Binary Sensor Report = 0xFF).
Advanced functions.
Screw Terminal.
Parameter #1 allows switching between the internal magnet or external connections like push buttons or dry contact sensors.
The screw terminal has the following connections:
- #1: Not used.
- #2: Not used.
- #3: Digital Input
- #4: Ground
Digital Input (#3) and Ground (#4) are used to connect an external dry contact mechanism to control scenes. Examples include:
- Push button
- Water sensor probes
- External magnet detection
- And more.
Illustration: A diagram shows the screw terminal with pins labeled #1, #2, #3, and #4.
Note: The contact Digital Input (#3) and Ground (#4) is a normally open (NO) contact. Closing the contact sends an "Open" or "Close" command. To change the input type to Normally Closed (NC), set parameter 2 to value 1.
The Door / Window Sensor 7 can also function as a Dry Contact Sensor.
Scene Controller.
When activated by configuration parameter #13, the device can act as a scene controller. The external dry contact can trigger up to 7 scenes:
- Contact Pressed 1 time
- Contact Pressed 2 times
- Contact Pressed 3 times
- Contact Pressed 4 times
- Contact Pressed 5 times
- Contact held down
- Contact released
For more information on using the Door / Window Sensor 7 as a scene controller, see this article.
Communication test.
This test uses the Power Level command class to determine the health of the connection between the Door / Window Sensor 7 and your Z-Wave gateway. It helps debug connectivity issues.
- Set Parameter #4 to value #1.
- Double-click the Tamper Switch.
- Result:
- Blinks once: success
- Blinks 5 times: failure
Firmware-Update over the Air.
This device supports Over-The-Air (OTA) firmware updates, provided the central controller supports this function. To confirm a firmware update:
- Wake up the device by removing the cover.
- Tap the tamper switch once.
Send a wake up notification.
To receive new configuration commands from your Z-Wave controller or gateway, the sensor needs to be woken up:
- Wake up the device by removing the cover.
- Tap the tamper switch once.
Note: The Door / Window Sensor 7 remains awake until its housing is closed again.
Remove your Door / Window Sensor 7 from Z-Wave network.
Your sensor can be removed from your Z-Wave network at any time using your network's main controller/gateway. Refer to your gateway's manual for specific instructions on removing devices.
- Set your Z-Wave controller into unpair mode.
- Triple-click the tamper switch on the Door / Window Sensor 7 within 1.5 seconds. The LED will blink five times.
- Upon successful exclusion, the LED will light up for 2 seconds and then deactivate.
Reset your Door / Windows Sensor 7.
The device can be reset without a Z-Wave controller. This procedure should only be used if the primary controller is inoperable.
To manually factory reset:
- Remove the cover of the Door / Window Sensor 7.
- Press and hold the tamper switch for 5 seconds until the red LED blinks.
- Release the tamper switch.
- Immediately press and hold the tamper switch for another 5 seconds until the red LED blinks.
