Important Safety and Installation Notes
- Most important step to know.
- NEVER start the phase converter with a load, this includes transformers.
- Verify incoming service KVA size with your electric company; it should be larger than the idler motor's HP.
- DO NOT use WIRE NUTS for any connection; use bolt-down lugs.
- Ensure all connections, including factory connections to the power block, are secure. Recheck connections after a few weeks of use.
- If the idler does NOT reach FULL SPEED upon powering up, shut down the phase converter immediately. If unsure, contact Phoenix Phase Converters or a qualified electrician. Failure to shut down may damage the idler motor, voiding the warranty.
- Must be installed by a licensed industrial electrician. These guidelines do not supersede local and state laws.
Power Requirements
Breaker and Wire Sizing
- Use a motor load type breaker, not a quick-blow or trip breaker.
- For single-machine operation with inductive loads (motors), double the machine's amp size for the breaker. Example: 20 amps load requires a 40 amp breaker.
- For multiple machines, double the amp size of the largest machine and add the amp requirements of other machines running simultaneously. Example: 20 AMP Lathe, 9 amp saw, 6 amp milling machine. Calculation: (20 * 2) + 9 + 6 = 45 amps. Use the next standard size breaker, which would be a 50 Amp two-pole breaker.
- Refer to the chart for minimum and maximum allowed wire and breaker sizes. For rural areas, increase the minimum breaker size by 20%.

Mounting the Phase Converter Panel
Installation Procedure
Mount the enclosure first to a non-vibrating surface. Two mounting options are provided. Install the back plate with the four provided nuts. Mounting the phase converter panel near the breaker panel is recommended. Keep the single-phase line wire as short as possible. Increase wire size for every 50 feet of run.

Connecting the Idler Motor Wires
This is an illustration of wire connections. DO NOT USE WIRE NUTS; USE BOLT DOWN LUGS.

NL and NH Models Wiring Diagram
Must be installed by an industrial licensed electrician.
Schematic diagram illustrating the connection of a single-phase circuit breaker panel, a phase converter panel, and an idler/generator motor for NL and NH models. It indicates that a disconnect should be used if the run is over 50 feet. It also specifies 230V connection for NL and PL Models (low voltage) and 460V connection for NH and PH Models (high voltage).
