Introduction

Hi All, Today I will share how to make this beautiful night light for your little princess. This project is in collaboration with RadianceLightbox.

Step 1: What Do We Need?

Gather the following materials:

  • Black A4 size cardstock/paper, Preferably 200 GSM
  • 3 Colorful neon sheets (120-150 GSM)
  • White A4 cardstock (120-175 GSM)
  • A cutting machine (e.g., Silhouette Cameo) or an X-Acto knife with a cutting mat
  • A4 size Shadowbox/Box Frame with a Black Frame
  • LED Lights – Warm white (e.g., fairy lights or LED modules)
  • Tape, glue stick, and scissors
  • Template (download available)

Visuals: Images show stacks of black paper, colorful sheets, a cutting mat with an X-Acto knife, LED light strips, masking tape, and a glue stick.

Step 2: Template

Please download the template from here.

Template Details:

Provided by RadianceLightbox, this template is titled "Sparkle like a Unicorn!". It is available in SVG and PDF formats, suitable for digital cutting machines like Silhouette or for hand cutting. The digital download includes 1 ZIP file. The template dimensions are approximately 11.7 inches in height and 8.3 inches in width.

Step 3: Cutting Time

For Silhouette Cameo users: The following settings are recommended for cutting cardstock:

  • Depth: 4
  • Force: 33
  • Speed: 3
  • Line Segment Overcut: ON

Visual: A screenshot displays the Silhouette Studio software interface with the unicorn design loaded and cutting parameters set.

For hand cutting: If you do not have a cutting machine, you can cut the template by hand using an X-Acto knife and a cutting mat.

Instructions: Cut the Unicorn template on black cardstock (200GSM). You can customize the name displayed on the night light.

Visual: An image shows the black cardstock after being cut by the machine, revealing the unicorn, stars, and the name "Riya".

Step 4: Weeding Time

Carefully weed out all the unwanted pieces of black cardstock from the cut design.

Important: Keep the small cut-out pieces for the unicorn's eyes and nose aside, as they will be used later.

Visual: An image shows the process of weeding the cut cardstock with an X-Acto knife on a cutting mat.

Step 5: Colorful Splash

Add colors of your choice to your Unicorn design. Cut pieces from the colorful neon cardstock sheets and adhere them with tape or glue stick to the back of the black cardstock, aligning them with the cut-out areas.

The author suggests using blue, pink, and green for a classic unicorn look, but encourages creative experimentation.

Note: The black cardstock is forgiving, as the edges of the neon paper are hidden within the borders, making them invisible from the front, even when the lights are on.

Important Note: Do not stick anything behind the main body of the Unicorn; let it remain white. This will enhance the glow effect of the nightlight.

Visual: An image shows the unicorn design with colorful neon paper pieces attached behind the cutouts, creating a vibrant effect.

Step 6: Add Background

Stick the white cardstock to the back of the assembled piece to serve as the background.

Using a glue stick, carefully attach the previously saved eye and nose pieces to their designated positions on the unicorn.

Visual: An image shows the completed unicorn design with the white background, eyes, and nose attached, ready for assembly into the frame.

Step 7: Assemble and Light Up!!

Place the completed unicorn artwork into the shadow box with the black frame.

Adhere the warm white LED lights (fairy lights or LED light modules) to the back of the shadow box. Approximately 3 LED modules are sufficient for illumination.

Visual: An image shows LED light strips connected to a power adapter, ready to be installed.

To finish, make a small cut in the backing of the shadow frame to allow the wire to exit. Secure the frame backing and turn on the lights.

Voilà!!! Your Unicorn Nightlight is ready to shine!

Visual: An image shows the finished Unicorn Night Light, illuminated and glowing, displaying the name "Riya" and another name.
