Battery and Charging Instructions
The CRANE-M3 features a built-in battery. Before first use, please fully charge the battery to activate it and ensure proper product operation.
Charging Method: Use the included USB Type-C cable to connect to a USB charger (not included) to charge the CRANE-M3. It is recommended to use a USB charger that supports PD protocol. The CRANE-M3 supports a maximum PD charging power of 12W.
Warning: The CRANE-M3 uses a high-energy-density lithium battery. Improper use or storage of the battery may lead to fire, economic loss, or personal injury. Please read this manual and the disclaimer carefully regarding battery usage before use.
Installation and Balancing
Installing the Tripod
Install the tripod onto the bottom of the CRANE-M3 handle. Then, unfold the tripod and place the CRANE-M3 on a level surface.
Installing the Camera
1. The CRANE-M3 has three motor axis lock switches. You can lock the CRANE-M3 for installation or storage. It is shipped in the storage state. First, slide the lock switches of the three motor axes to the unlock position. Unfold to the illustrated position, then lock the three motor axes for easier camera installation.
2. Mount the camera onto the quick-release plate and tighten the screws securely.
3. Slide the quick-release plate safety lock to the unlock position (①), then install the entire quick-release plate onto the CRANE-M3 (②), ensuring it is securely mounted.
To detach, slide the quick-release plate safety lock to the unlock position (①), then press the quick-release plate release button (②) to remove the quick-release plate (③).
4. Connect the camera control / charging port of the gimbal to the camera's USB port.
- ① Type-C to Multi cable is for Sony camera control, allowing control of recording start/stop for some Sony cameras. Type-C to Type-C and Type-C to Micro cables are for camera charging. Choose the appropriate cable for your application.
- ② The camera control/charging port on the gimbal only supports control for some Sony cameras. To control cameras from other brands, purchase the Zhiyun Crane M3 Bluetooth Control Module. For usage tutorials, please refer to the "Scaly Crane M3 Bluetooth Control Module" manual on the official Zhiyun website (www.zhiyun-tech.com).
- ③ For a list of compatible cameras, please visit the official Zhiyun website (www.zhiyun-tech.com) and refer to the "CRANE-M3 Camera Compatibility List" for the latest information.
Installing the Phone
Mount the phone onto the phone clamp, then mount the assembly onto the quick-release plate. Tighten the screws securely.
Installing the Action Camera
Mount the action camera onto the base (not included), then mount the assembly onto the quick-release plate. Tighten the screws securely.
The CRANE-M3 provides stabilization for phones and action cameras but does not support button control.
Balancing Adjustment
1. Pitch Axis Horizontal Balance Adjustment:
Unlock the pitch axis lock switch (①), loosen the pitch axis locking lever (②), and move the camera forward or backward (③) until it remains horizontal to the ground (④). Then, tighten the locking lever (⑤).
2. Pitch Axis Vertical Balance Adjustment:
Unlock the pitch axis lock switch. With the camera lens facing upwards, loosen the horizontal mounting plate locking screw (①). Move the mounting plate forward or backward (②) until the camera remains vertical to the ground (③). Then, tighten the locking screw (④).
3. Roll Axis Balance Adjustment:
Unlock the roll axis lock switch (①), loosen the roll axis locking lever (②), and move the roll arm left or right (③) until it remains horizontal to the ground (④). Then, tighten the locking lever (⑤).
4. Yaw Axis Balance Adjustment:
Unlock the yaw axis lock switch (①), loosen the yaw axis locking lever (②). Hold the handle and tilt it slightly, then move the yaw arm left or right (③) until the yaw arm remains stationary in any position. Then, tighten the locking lever (④).
After completing the balance adjustment on the CRANE-M3, you need to adjust the motor force to achieve optimal motor force parameters. For detailed adjustment methods, please refer to the "Motor Force Parameter Adjustment" section in this manual.
Using the CRANE-M3
Button Functions
- Power Button: Single press: Lock/unlock touchscreen. Long press: Power on/off.
- Shutter/Record Button: Single press: Start/stop recording. Double press: Take a photo.
- M Button: Single press: Switch between Pan Follow (PF), Full Lock (L), and FPV modes. Double press: Switch between First-Person View (POV) and Three-Dimension Dreamer (V) modes. Long press: Put gimbal motor to sleep/wake up.
- Fill Light Control Dial: Single press: Switch brightness/color temperature. Long press: Turn fill light on/off. Scroll up/down: Adjust brightness/color temperature.
- Trigger Button: Double press: Center the gimbal. Triple press: Rotate the yaw axis motor 180°. Long press: Enter "Mad Dog" mode; release to return to the previous mode.
- Gimbal Joystick: Move the joystick up, down, left, or right to control gimbal movement.
- Scroll Wheel*: Can be customized on the touchscreen to control aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focus, or roll.

Touchscreen Menu Explanation
- Gimbal Mode: Select between Pan Follow (PF), Full Lock (L), Follow (F), First-Person View (POV), GO Mode, Three-Dimension Dreamer (V), and Portrait Mode.
- Balance Test: View the balance status of the gimbal's three axes.
- System Information:
- System Language: Switch between Simplified Chinese and English.
- Device Information: View device name, model, serial number, and firmware version.
- Factory Reset: Reset the gimbal to factory settings.
- Gimbal Settings:
- Intelligent Calibration: Automatically calibrate motor torque after balancing.
- Parameter Settings: Adjust motor torque, smoothness, follow speed, and joystick speed/dead zone.
- Parameter Reset: Reset gimbal parameters to default.
- Scroll Wheel Function: Customize the scroll wheel to control aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focus, or roll.
Motor Force Parameter Adjustment
After completing the balance adjustment, you need to adjust the gimbal motor force to achieve optimal parameters based on the weight of your camera and lens. The following are two methods for adjusting motor force; intelligent calibration is recommended.
1. Intelligent Calibration: This feature automatically adjusts the motor force based on the weight of the camera and lens. Select "Intelligent Calibration" from the "Gimbal Settings" menu, then tap "Start Calibration" to enter the calibration state. Follow the on-screen prompts to monitor the calibration progress.
Ensure all gimbal axis lock switches are engaged, the gimbal is in an upright position, and placed on a level surface during intelligent calibration. Do not interfere with the gimbal's movement during calibration.
2. Parameter Settings - Motor Torque:
Offers three levels of motor force: Low, Medium, and High, based on typical camera and lens combinations. Select the appropriate level based on the weight of your camera and lens.
① If the gimbal motor force is too light or too heavy for the load, it may cause camera shake and affect performance. Always select the appropriate motor force for your setup. ② Intelligent calibration is recommended. If it does not meet your needs, you can directly select High/Medium/Low force levels. ③ After changing the camera or lens, re-balance the gimbal and adjust the motor force parameters accordingly.
Working Mode Description
Red circles indicate motor movement following handle changes in angle. Gray circles indicate locked motor angles, not following handle movement.
Pan Follow Mode (PF):
Pitch and roll axis motors are locked. The camera follows handle movement horizontally. Push the joystick up/down to change the pitch angle. Push left/right to change the camera's horizontal orientation.
Full Lock Mode (L):
All three motor axes are locked. The camera's orientation does not change with handle movement. Push the joystick up/down to change the camera's pitch angle. Push left/right to change the camera's horizontal orientation.
Follow Mode (F):
Roll axis motor is locked. Pitch and yaw axis motors follow handle movement. Push the joystick up/down to change the camera's pitch angle. Push left/right to change the camera's horizontal orientation.
First-Person View (POV) Mode:
All three axes follow handle movement.
Three-Dimension Dreamer (V) Mode:
The pitch axis motor rotates 90° upwards. The pitch, roll, and yaw axis motors follow handle movement. Pushing the joystick left/right controls the yaw axis rotation.
GO Mode:
Roll axis motor is locked. Pitch and yaw axis motors follow handle movement rapidly.
Portrait Mode:
The pitch axis motor rotates 90° upwards, and the yaw axis rotates 90°. In Portrait Mode, you can shoot vertical screen footage.
Manual Positioning
In Pan Follow (PF) and Full Lock (L) modes, you can manually rotate the camera to the desired angle and hold it for approximately 2 seconds. The camera's angle will then be fixed (pitch and yaw axes).
Replacing Fill Light Filter Sheets
The CRANE-M3's fill light features a magnetic quick-release design and comes in red, yellow, blue, and orange colors. You can change the filter sheets according to your needs.
Using with Scaly Interview Microphone
1. Install the Scaly Crane M3 Expansion Base onto the bottom of the CRANE-M3 handle. Tighten the screws securely to ensure firm installation.
2. Use the 6.5 to K-type audio cable to connect the microphone to the MIC IN port on the base.
3. Connect the camera's microphone input port to the CRANE-M3's audio transmission port using the correct audio cable, based on your camera's microphone input port model.
- ① The microphone has HYPER-CARDIOID and CARDIOID modes. Choose the appropriate mode based on your application.
- ② The microphone requires batteries to operate.

Using the APP
Downloading the APP
You can scan the QR code on the left to download the "ZY Play" App (for Android 5.0 and above, iOS 9.0 and above), or search for "ZY Play" in your mobile app store.
- ① "ZY Play" is a dedicated app for the CRANE-M3. After activating the CRANE-M3 with "ZY Play", you can use the app for firmware updates, virtual joystick control, motion control, time-lapse photography, and other advanced functions.
- ② Please use the latest version of the app. Updates will be announced if any occur.
How to Connect
- Turn on the CRANE-M3 and enable Bluetooth on your phone.
- Open the "ZY Play" App, select the product page corresponding to your CRANE-M3, tap "Connect Now", and select the CRANE-M3 with the corresponding Bluetooth name (the Bluetooth name of the CRANE-M3 can be found on the pitch arm as USER ID: XXXX).
- When connecting the CRANE-M3 to the "ZY Play" App for the first time, it needs to be activated. Otherwise, the advanced functions of "ZY Play" will not be available. After successful connection, follow the prompts to activate. Activation requires an internet connection.
- Once the device is activated, you can access the "ZY Play" App's function interface.

Firmware Update and Calibration
Firmware Update
The CRANE-M3 can be updated using the "Zhiyun Gimbal Tools" software or the "ZY Play" App.
Method One:
- Connect the CRANE-M3 to your computer using a USB Type-C cable via the Type-C charging/firmware update port. Turn on the CRANE-M3 and enter standby mode.
- Visit the official Zhiyun (ZHIYUN) website (www.zhiyun-tech.com), navigate to the CRANE-M3 product page, find the "Download" section, and download the USB driver, Zhiyun Calibration & Update Tool, and firmware. (Apple systems do not require a USB driver installation.)
- Install the software and drivers. Unzip the firmware package to obtain the file with the .ptz extension.
- Open the Zhiyun Calibration & Update Tool ("Zhiyun Gimbal Tools"). Select the corresponding port, click "Open Serial Port" at the top of the tool, click "Firmware Update", click "Browse" in the "Path" section to select the downloaded latest firmware (file with .ptz extension), and finally click "Update" at the bottom of the tool to enter the update state. After a successful update, the CRANE-M3 will automatically shut down.
Method Two:
After connecting the CRANE-M3 to the "ZY Play" App, if the "ZY Play" App prompts for a firmware update, follow the instructions. An internet connection is required for the update.
Before updating the firmware, ensure the CRANE-M3 has at least 50% battery power. Do not exit the App interface or switch to the background during the update. Pay attention to the App prompts.
Six-Sided Calibration
Reasons for Calibration:
- Initial startup shows a deviation in the gimbal's horizontal angle.
- Gimbal has not been used for a long time.
- Significant temperature variations in the operating environment.
Calibration Method:
- Method One: Six-Sided Calibration via APP: Follow the instructions in the "Using the APP" section of this manual. After connecting the gimbal to the App, go to "Settings" > "Six-Sided Calibration" and follow the App's prompts for calibration.
- Method Two: Six-Sided Calibration via Zhiyun Calibration & Update Tool: After turning on the gimbal and entering standby mode, connect the gimbal to your computer using a USB Type-C cable via the charging/update port. Open the calibration tool, click "Open Serial Port" at the top, click "IMU Calibration" on the tool, and follow the on-screen prompts and illustrations to perform the calibration. The tool will indicate completion with a "√" symbol.
The steps for six-sided calibration are shown in the following diagrams. After calibration, restart the gimbal for normal operation.
Six-sided calibration can be understood as making the six surfaces of the pitch axis arm perpendicular to the horizontal plane.

Lab data 1: This data was obtained under environmental conditions of 25°C, with a fully charged 1150mAh battery, and a Nikon Z50 + DX 16-50mm lens installed and balanced. The gimbal was placed statically, and the continuous working time was 8 hours.
Lab data 2: This test was conducted at an environmental temperature of 25°C using a PD 12W power adapter. The charging time was 2 hours. Charging time may vary due to environmental factors. Furthermore, lower charging temperatures may result in lower charging currents and longer charging times.
All data in this manual are internal test results from Zhiyun laboratories. Under different objective conditions, the data may have varying degrees of error. Please refer to the actual product experience.

This product is not suitable for children. Do not use the CRANE-M3 with products not provided or recommended by Zhiyun (ZHIYUN), or operate it in violation of the safety guidelines mentioned in Zhiyun (ZHIYUN)'s product documentation. This document contains safety, operation, and maintenance instructions. To ensure correct and safe use of the CRANE-M3, please carefully read all instructions and warnings mentioned in the user manual and safety guidelines before installation, setup, and use, and strictly follow the relevant instructions for installation and use of the CRANE-M3.
Safety Operation Guidelines
Attention:
- The CRANE-M3 is a high-precision control device. Dropping or suffering external impact may damage the CRANE-M3 and cause abnormal operation.
- Ensure that the gimbal rotation is not obstructed by external forces when the CRANE-M3 is powered on.
- The CRANE-M3 is not waterproof. Do not expose the CRANE-M3 to any liquids. It is recommended to clean the CRANE-M3 with a soft, dry cloth.
- Protect the CRANE-M3 from dust and sand during use.
Warning: To prevent fire, property damage, and personal injury, always follow the safety guidelines below when using, charging, and storing the battery.
- Never expose the battery to any liquid. Do not immerse the battery in water or get it wet. Do not use the battery in rain or humid environments. If water comes into contact with the battery's internal components, it may cause decomposition, leading to spontaneous combustion or even explosion.
- If the battery catches fire, use sand or a dry powder fire extinguisher to put it out immediately.
- Do not use batteries not officially provided by Zhiyun (ZHIYUN). If you need to replace the battery, please contact Zhiyun (ZHIYUN) or an authorized dealer. Zhiyun (ZHIYUN) is not responsible for battery accidents or equipment malfunctions caused by the use of non-Zhiyun (ZHIYUN) official batteries.
- Do not use swollen, leaking, or damaged batteries, or attempt to charge them. If the battery emits an unusual odor, heats up (battery surface temperature exceeds 71°C / 160°F), deforms, discolors, or shows any other abnormality, discontinue use immediately. If the battery exhibits abnormal behavior, contact Zhiyun (ZHIYUN) or an authorized dealer for further assistance.
- Use the battery within a temperature range of -10°C to 45°C. Temperatures above 45°C may cause the battery to catch fire or explode. Temperatures below -10°C can severely damage the battery.
- Do not use the battery in environments with strong static electricity or magnetic fields, as this may cause the battery protection circuit to malfunction.
- Never disassemble or puncture the battery with sharp objects. Battery leakage can cause fire or explosion.
- Do not subject the battery to mechanical impact, crushing, or dropping. Do not place heavy objects on the battery or charger.
- The battery's internal electrolyte is corrosive. If it comes into contact with skin or eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.
- If the battery is dropped or subjected to impact, stop using it.
- Do not heat the battery. Do not place the battery in a microwave or pressure cooker.
- Do not place battery cells on conductive surfaces (e.g., metal desktops, glasses, watches, jewelry, or other metal objects).
- Do not short-circuit the battery terminals with wires or other metal objects.
- Do not place the battery and charger near flammable or combustible materials (such as carpets and wood products) while charging. Always supervise the charging process to prevent accidents.
- Disconnect the gimbal from the charger after charging is complete.
- Batteries that have just been used are hot. Do not charge them immediately. Wait for the battery to cool down to room temperature before charging. Charging at temperatures above 45°C or below 0°C may cause battery leakage, overheating, or damage.
- Store the battery out of reach of children and pets.
- Do not store the battery near heat sources (e.g., stoves or heaters) or in a hot car. Do not store the battery in environments exceeding 60°C. The ideal storage temperature is between 22°C and 28°C.
- Store the battery in a dry environment.
- Do not store the battery for extended periods after it has been completely discharged, as this may cause the battery to enter a deep discharge state, leading to irreparable damage to the battery cells.
- Do not overcharge or over-discharge the battery, as this will damage the battery cells.
- Prolonged idle periods may affect battery performance.
- Do not use the battery in environments with excessively high or low temperatures.
- Do not store the battery in environments exceeding 60°C.
- Recharge the battery every 3 months to maintain its activity.
Completely discharge the battery before disposing of it in a designated battery recycling bin. Improper disposal of batteries can be hazardous. Do not dispose of batteries in ordinary trash bins. For details, please follow local laws and regulations regarding battery recycling and disposal.

Warranty Period Description
- Within 15 days of signing for the product, if quality issues arise, you are entitled to a replacement or free repair service.
- The warranty period for the product under correct usage and maintenance is generally one year from the date of signing. Due to differences in product components, national laws, and regulations, the warranty period may vary. For warranty periods in specific regions, please consult the official Zhiyun (ZHIYUN) website or your Zhiyun (ZHIYUN) authorized dealer.
Warranty Exclusions
- Unauthorized repairs, misuse, collision, negligence, abuse, liquid ingress, accidents, or modifications.
- Improper use of the product, or removal or alteration of labels and anti-counterfeit marks.
- Exceeding the three-guarantee validity period.
- Damage caused by force majeure events such as fire, flood, lightning, etc.

Management Measures for Low-Power Radio Frequency Electrical Equipment
Article 12:
Without permission, companies, firms, or users shall not alter frequency, increase power, or change the original design characteristics and functions of low-power radio frequency electrical equipment that has passed type certification.
Article 14:
