Driving Data Growth: The Evolution of HDDs

[Image: A Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC560 20TB data center hard drive.]

Hyperscale cloud, CSPs, enterprises, smart video surveillance system partners, and NAS suppliers are seeking storage solutions to keep pace with the rapid growth of data creation. Hard disk drives (HDDs) continue to be the primary choice for cost-effective, large-scale data storage. IDC forecasts that by 2025, HDDs will account for 82% of the capacity shipped into the enterprise market. HDDs currently provide and will continue to provide the capacity, performance, and reliability needed to store vast amounts of data now and in the future. Investment in HDD technology will remain essential to support the global increase in data.

Western Digital, through its vertical integration of industry-leading NAND flash and world-class HDDs, has developed flash-enhanced drives powered by OptiNAND™ technology. Western Digital's HDDs have led the way in increasing areal density with industry-first technologies such as energy-assisted magnetic recording (EAMR), triple actuator (TSA), HelioSeal®, and now OptiNAND technology. By increasing areal density, capacity can be expanded to address storage challenges.

OptiNAND™ Technology Powers 20TB HDD

OptiNAND integrates iNAND® Universal Flash Storage (UFS) with traditional rotating disk media in a flash-enhanced drive (Embedded Flash Drive: EFD). This integration, along with innovative firmware algorithms and system-on-a-chip (SoC) advancements, allows the drive to operate more intelligently. The iNAND offloads extended metadata, enabling enhanced firmware algorithms that increase the tracks per inch (TPI), thereby increasing areal density.

The Ultrastar DC HC560 is the first to implement OptiNAND technology's capacity-enabling features. It achieves an ultra-high capacity of 20TB on a 9-disk platform (2.2TB/platter) using the CMR recording format.

Uncompromising Reliability and Quality for Massive Data Demands

The Ultrastar DC HC560 meets the stringent reliability requirements of modern data centers with a 2.5 million hours Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) and a 5-year limited warranty. It also offers security and encryption options to protect data from unauthorized use (available in SED models).

Leverage the massive capacity and value of your data center with the reliable Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC560 hard disk drive.
