The Conductor of a Performance

The orchestra may create the melody, but the conductor completes the music by tuning the volume, tempo, and intensity of the sound.

The engine creates the output of a vehicle, but the transmission completes the performance by adjusting the power.

Understanding Kia Transmissions

Transmissions are divided into manual, automatic, and dual-clutch transmissions depending on how they work.

Manual Transmission

The driver operates the clutch and gears directly. The driver uses the shift lever to select the appropriate gear. Offers low maintenance costs and a direct sensation of driving.

Automatic Transmission

The driver selects one of P, R, N, and D. There is no clutch pedal and no need to use the shift lever when driving. Widely used because it is convenient and smooth to drive.

Dual-clutch Transmission

Has two clutches, so it shifts faster and more smoothly than an automatic transmission. Operates the same as an automatic transmission.

Paddle Shifter

With the shift lever in D position, pull the paddles on the left and right to change gear.

  • Downshift: Pulling the paddle [shift down] shifts to a lower gear, increasing engine revs, momentarily boosting power, and engaging the engine brake.
  • Upshift: Pulling the paddle [+] [shift up] shifts to a higher gear, decreasing engine revs, improving fuel efficiency, and enabling smooth acceleration at high speeds.

Transmission Overheating Warning

Repeated stopping and starting on steep slopes or rapid acceleration may cause the transmission clutch to overheat and the warning light to come on. The warning light does not indicate a transmission failure. The problem can be resolved by stopping the vehicle for a while and letting the transmission cool down.

If the orange warning light comes on ?, refrain from aggressive driving. If you drive stop-start, put the shift lever in N or P when stopped.

If the red warning light comes on ?, it will be difficult to continue driving. Stop the vehicle and let the transmission cool down.

Cooling Down Procedure

  1. Step 1: Park up in a safe place ?️
  2. Step 2: Leave the engine running and put the vehicle in P
  3. Step 3: Put the handbrake on and wait for 5-15 minutes*

* May vary according to the temperature outside and degree of overheating.

Important Information

If the warning message does not disappear or the problem persists, please visit a Kia dealer. A technician must perform a diagnostic inspection using specialist equipment to prevent further damage to the transmission and drivetrain.

The criteria and details may differ depending on the options and specifications of each individual vehicle, and may vary according to regional regulations, driving conditions, the actual condition of the vehicle, and external factors.
