2. Oil and Gasoline

Add Engine Oil

Recommendation: SAE 10W-30 API SJ or higher oil for best performance. Do not use special additives.

NOTICE: Do not attempt to start the engine before it has been properly filled with oil. Damage due to operation with no oil will void your warranty.

Oil Viscosity Chart Description: A chart displays recommended oil types (Full Synthetic 5W-30, 5W-30, 10W-40, 10W-30) corresponding to ambient temperature ranges in both Celsius and Fahrenheit.

Procedure:

  1. Place generator on a flat, level surface.
  2. Clean the area around the oil fill and remove the yellow oil fill cap/dipstick.
  3. Wipe the dipstick clean. NOTICE: Do not screw in the cap/dipstick when checking the oil level.
  4. Using an oil funnel, slowly pour oil into the oil fill opening until it reaches the upper limit "H" mark on the dipstick. Do not overfill.
  5. Replace the oil fill cap/dipstick and tighten fully.
  6. Check oil level before each use or at least every 8 hours of operation. Keep oil level maintained.

Low Oil Shutdown: The generator is equipped with a low oil shutdown system that stops the engine if the oil level drops too low. If the engine shuts off, check the oil level. Ensure the generator is on a level surface. If the engine fails to start, the oil level may be too low to deactivate the switch; ensure the sump is completely full to the upper limit (H).

Add Gasoline

WARNING! Fuel and its vapors are extremely flammable and can cause burns or fire, resulting in death or serious injury. ?

Turn the engine OFF and let it cool for at least 2 minutes before refueling. Do not refuel or move the generator when the engine is running. Move the generator outdoors before adding or draining fuel. Keep fuel away from ignition sources. Do not overfill the tank; allow space for fuel expansion. If fuel spills, wait for it to evaporate before starting the engine. Check and replace fuel lines, tank, cap, and fittings if damaged or leaking.

Fuel Requirements: Clean, fresh, unleaded gasoline with a minimum of 87 octane. Gasoline with no more than 10% ethanol (E10, E15) is acceptable.

NOTICE: Do not mix oil in gasoline or modify the engine for alternate fuels. Use of unapproved fuels can damage the engine and void the warranty.

Procedure:

  1. Clean the area around the fuel fill cap and remove the cap.
  2. Slowly add unleaded fuel to the tank. Do not fill above the RED fuel level indicator.
  3. Install the fuel cap and let any spilled fuel evaporate before starting the engine.

Diagram Description: Shows the fuel tank with a red line indicator for the maximum fuel level.

Operation at High Altitude: At altitudes over 5,000 feet (1524 meters), a minimum 85 octane gasoline is acceptable. Engine power and generator output will be reduced approximately 3.5% for every 1000 feet (305 m) of elevation. CRAFTSMAN can provide a high altitude carburetor main jet. Contact Customer Support for the alternative main jet and installation instructions.

Altitude Main Jet Information: Lists part numbers for main jets for different altitude ranges (3000-6000 ft, 6000-8000 ft).

NOTICE: Operating with an alternative main jet at lower elevations can damage the engine. Use the standard main jet for lower elevations. Using the wrong main jet can increase exhaust emissions, fuel consumption, and reduce performance.

Operation at High Ambient Conditions: The product is designed for continuous operation up to 104°F (40°C). It may be operated at temperatures from 5°F (-15°C) to 122°F (50°C) for short periods. Power may decrease when operated above 77°F (25°C).

Surge Protection: Sensitive electronic equipment may be affected by momentary voltage fluctuations. Install a plug-in surge suppressor on receptacles feeding sensitive equipment. Surge suppressors protect against short-duration voltage fluctuations.

CO Alert™ Carbon Monoxide (CO) Shutdown System

CO Alert automatically shuts down the engine when harmful levels of carbon monoxide accumulate or a CO Alert fault occurs. After shutdown, the CO Alert indicator light will blink for at least five minutes. CO Alert does NOT replace carbon monoxide alarms. Install battery-powered carbon monoxide alarms in your home. Do not run the generator in enclosed areas.

  • Red Light: Carbon monoxide accumulated around the generator. Prior to restart, move the generator to an open, outdoor area at least 20 ft. (6 m) from occupied spaces with exhaust pointed away. Air out premises before reoccupying. Automatic shutoff indicates improper location. If you feel sick, dizzy, weak, or your home's CO alarm sounds, get to fresh air immediately and call emergency services.
  • Yellow Light: CO Alert fault occurred. See a CRAFTSMAN authorized service dealer.

Note: The yellow light will blink for five seconds at startup to show the CO ALERT is functioning properly.

5. Stopping the Generator

  1. Turn off and remove all electrical loads. Never stop the generator with electrical devices plugged in and turned on. Never stop the engine by moving the choke to the start position.
  2. Let the generator run at no-load for one minute to stabilize internal temperatures.
  3. Flip the engine switch to "OFF" (O) position.
  4. Do not leave the generator until it has completely stopped.

NOTICE: Failure to clean or replace the spark arrester may decrease engine performance.

Generator Maintenance:

Run the generator at least 30 minutes every month. Keep the unit clean and dry. Do not expose to excessive dust, dirt, moisture, or corrosive vapors. Do not insert objects through cooling slots. Before each use, inspect underneath for oil or fuel leaks. Clean accumulated debris. Keep the area around the muffler free from debris. Use a soft bristle brush for dirt/oil; use a damp cloth for exterior surfaces.

Long Term Storage:

To prevent gum deposits in the fuel system (carburetor, fuel lines, tank) during storage, follow these instructions:

WARNING! Fuel and its vapors are extremely flammable. Do not store fuel near ignition sources. When draining fuel, move the generator outdoors and use a commercially available non-conductive vacuum siphon. Fuel must be drained into an approved container.

  1. Treat any stored fuel with a fuel stabilizer.
  2. If storing with gasoline in the tank, operate the engine for 5-10 minutes to circulate treated fuel into fuel lines and carburetor before shutdown.
  3. There is no need to drain gasoline if fuel stabilizer is added.
  4. FUEL STARVATION: If you choose to drain the fuel tank, move the generator outdoors. With the fuel valve ON, start and run the generator until it stops from lack of gasoline. This drains the tank, lines, and carburetor.
  5. Always turn the fuel valve to the "OFF" (O) position prior to storage.
  6. Allow the generator to cool before cleaning and storage.
  7. Change the oil.
  8. Remove the spark plug boot and spark plug. Pour about one teaspoon of engine oil through the spark plug hole, then slowly pull the recoil starter several times to distribute the oil in the cylinder. Pull recoil slowly until resistance is felt to close the valves and prevent moisture entry. Reinstall the spark plug and attach the spark plug boot.
  9. Cover the generator and store in a clean, dry place out of direct sunlight and away from ignition sources.

NOTICE: Damage or hazards caused by improper fuel, storage, or stabilizers are not covered by the manufacturer's warranty. Do not store gasoline from one season to another.
