- Ensure blade is not contacting workpiece before switch-on.
- Keep hands away from moving parts.
- Do not leave the tool running; operate only when hand-held.
- Switch off and wait for blade to stop before removing from workpiece.
- Do not touch blade or workpiece immediately after operation.
Functional Description
Switch Action
CAUTION: Always ensure the tool is switched off and unplugged before adjusting or checking functions.
CAUTION: Before plugging in, check that the switch trigger actuates properly and returns to "OFF" when released.
For Model 4300BA (Fig. 1)
To start, pull the switch trigger. Release to stop. For continuous operation, pull trigger and push lock button. To stop from locked position, pull trigger fully, then release.
For Model 4300BV (Fig. 2)
To start, pull the switch trigger. Speed increases with pressure. Release to stop. For continuous operation, pull trigger and push lock button. To stop from locked position, pull trigger fully, then release.
A speed control screw limits maximum speed (variable). Turn the speed control screw clockwise for higher speed, and counterclockwise for lower speed.
Assembly
CAUTION: Always ensure the tool is switched off and unplugged before assembly work.
Installing or Removing Saw Blade (Fig. 3)
CAUTION: Clean out chips or foreign matter from blade/holder to prevent insufficient tightening, which could cause serious injury.
CAUTION: Do not touch blade or workpiece immediately after operation as they may be hot.
CAUTION: Secure the blade firmly. Insufficient tightening may cause breakage or injury.
Use hex wrench to remove the bolt securing the blade clamp to the blade holder shaft. Place blade shank over the flat side of the shaft, teeth facing forward. Place blade clamp over the other side of the shank. Secure with the bolt through the larger hole.
Installing the Universal Shank Jig Saw Blade (Fig. 4)
If using the universal blade clamp, blades of other makes with a 6.35 mm universal shank can be used. Remove the factory clamp with the hex wrench. Loosen the bolt on the universal clamp, fit the universal shank blade onto the spring pin inside the clamp (Fig. 5). Attach the universal clamp to the blade holder (blade in place) so the spring pin fits into the holder's hole. Tighten the bolt securely with the hex wrench (Fig. 6).
Adjusting Roller (Fig. 7)
Loosen the bolt on the back of the base with the hex wrench. Move the retainer so the roller lightly contacts the blade. Tighten the bolt to secure the base and retainer. If the blade does not have a straight back, slide the retainer back so the roller does not contact the blade.
NOTE: Occasionally lubricate the roller.
Dust Cover (Fig. 8)
CAUTION: Always wear safety goggles, even when operating with the dust cover.
Install dust cover in the correct position using two screws to prevent sawdust scattering.
Rip Fence (Optional Accessory) (Fig. 9)
For repeated cuts under 150 mm, the rip fence ensures fast, clean, straight cuts. Loosen the bolt on the front of the base, insert the rip fence, and secure the bolt (Fig. 10).
Circular Guide (Optional Accessory) (Fig. 11)
The circular guide ensures clean, smooth cutting of circles up to 200 mm radius. Insert the pin through the center hole and secure with the knob. Move the tool base forward. Install the circular guide on the base like the rip fence (Fig. 12).
Operation
CAUTION: Hold the tool firmly with one hand on the main handle. Support the front with the other hand if necessary.
CAUTION: Always hold the base flush with the workpiece. Failure to do so may cause blade breakage or serious injury.
CAUTION: Advance the tool very slowly when cutting curves or scrolling. Forcing the tool may cause a slanted cutting surface and blade breakage.
Turn the tool on without the blade contacting the workpiece and wait for full speed. Rest the base flat on the workpiece and gently move the tool forward along the marked cutting line.
Bevel Cutting (Fig. 14)
CAUTION: Ensure the tool is switched off and unplugged before tilting the base.
The base can be tilted for bevel cuts from 0° to 45° (left or right). Loosen the bolt on the back of the base with the hex wrench and slide the base backwards. Tilt to the desired angle. The motor housing edge indicates the angle. Check contact between the back edge of the blade and the roller. Tighten the bolt to secure the base (Fig. 15).
Front Flush Cuts (Fig. 16)
Loosen the bolt on the back of the base, move the base all the way back. Check contact between the back edge of the blade and the roller. Tighten the bolt to secure the base.
Cutouts
Cutouts can be made by two methods:
A) Boring a Starting Hole (Fig. 17)
For internal cutouts without a lead-in cut, pre-drill a starting hole of 12 mm or more diameter. Insert the blade into this hole to start the cut.
B) Plunge Cutting (Fig. 18)
No starting hole or lead-in cut is needed if done carefully:
- Tilt the tool up on the front edge of the base with the blade point just above the workpiece surface.
- Apply pressure so the front edge of the base does not move when switching on the tool. Gently lower the back end of the tool slowly.
- As the blade pierces the workpiece, slowly lower the base onto the workpiece surface.
- Complete the cut normally.
Finishing Edges (Fig. 19)
To trim edges or make dimensional adjustments, run the blade lightly along the cut edges. For smoother cutting of plywood or easily splintered surfaces, use transparent tape over the cutting line.
Metal Cutting (Fig. 20)
Always use suitable coolant (cutting oil) when cutting metal to prevent significant blade wear. The underside of the workpiece can be greased instead of using coolant (Fig. 21).
Maintenance
CAUTION: Ensure the tool is switched off and unplugged before inspection or maintenance.
Never use gasoline, benzine, thinner, alcohol, etc., as this may cause discoloration, deformation, or cracks.
Replacing Carbon Brushes (Fig. 22)
Remove and check carbon brushes regularly. Replace when worn to the limit mark. Keep brushes clean and free to slip. Replace both brushes at the same time. Use only identical carbon brushes.
Use a screwdriver to remove brush holder caps. Remove worn brushes, insert new ones, and secure caps (Fig. 23).
For product SAFETY and RELIABILITY, repairs and adjustments should be performed by Makita Authorized Service Centers using only Makita replacement parts.
