- Use safety footwear, snug fitting clothing, and eye, hearing, and head protection.
- Handle fuel with caution. Wipe up spills and move the saw at least 10 feet (3m) from the fueling point before starting. Eliminate all sources of sparks or flame in fueling areas. Do not smoke while handling fuel or operating the saw.
- Keep bystanders and animals at least 30 feet (9m) away from the work area when starting or operating the saw.
- Ensure a clear work area, secure footing, and a planned retreat path before cutting.
- Always hold the chain saw firmly with both hands when the engine is running.
- Keep all parts of your body away from the saw chain when the engine is running.
- Before starting, ensure the saw chain is not contacting anything.
- Carry the chain saw with the engine stopped, the guide bar and chain to the rear, and the muffler away from your body.
- Inspect the chain saw before each use for worn or loose parts. Never operate a damaged or improperly adjusted saw. Ensure the saw chain stops moving when the throttle control trigger is released.
- Chain saw service, other than specified in this manual, should be performed by competent service personnel. Improper tools can cause damage.
- Always shut off the engine before setting it down.
- Use extreme caution when cutting small brush and saplings, as they can catch the chain and cause loss of balance.
- When cutting a limb under tension, be alert for spring back.
- Keep handles dry, clean, and free of oil or fuel mixture.
- Operate the chain saw only in well-ventilated areas. Never start or run the engine inside a closed room or building due to carbon monoxide.
- Do not operate a chain saw in a tree unless specially trained.
- Guard against kickback. Kickback is the upward motion of the guide bar when the saw chain contacts an object.
- When transporting, ensure the guide bar scabbard is in place.
- This chain saw has a spark arrester muffler. Periodically check it.
KICKBACK SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR CHAIN SAW USERS
WARNING: Kickback can occur when the nose or tip of the guide bar touches an object, or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain. This can lead to loss of control and serious injury.
- Understand kickback to reduce surprise.
- Maintain a firm grip on the saw with both hands.
- Ensure the cutting area is free from obstructions. Do not let the nose of the guide bar contact logs or branches.
- Cut at high engine speeds.
- Do not overreach or cut above shoulder height.
- Follow manufacturer's instructions for sharpening and maintenance.
- Use only manufacturer-specified replacement bars and chains.
5. Installing guide bar and saw chain
A standard saw unit package includes the power unit, bar protector, guide bar, saw chain, plug wrench, and screwdriver for carburetor adjustment.
WARNING: The saw chain has very sharp edges. Use thick protective gloves for safety.
- Pull the guard towards the front handle to check that the chain brake is not on.
- Loosen the nuts and remove the chain cover.
- Gear the chain to the sprocket, mount the guide bar to the power unit, and adjust the chain tensioner.
- Fit the chain cover and fasten the nuts finger-tight.
- While holding up the tip of the bar, adjust the chain tension by turning the tensioner screw until the tie straps just touch the bottom side of the bar rail.
- Tighten the nuts securely with the bar tip held up (12-15 N·m). Check the chain for smooth rotation and proper tension. Readjust if necessary.
- Tighten the tensioner screw.
NOTE: A new chain will expand its length in the beginning of use. Check and readjust the tension frequently.
6. Fuel and Chain oil
FUEL
Use oil specially formulated for air-cooled 2-cycle gasoline engines. If RedMax oil is not available, use an antioxidant-added quality oil labeled for air-cooled 2-cycle engines.
RECOMMENDED MIXING RATIO: GASOLINE 32 : OIL 1
These engines are certified to operate on unleaded gasoline.
WARNING: Fuel is highly flammable. Do not smoke or bring flame or sparks near fuel.
HOW TO MIX FUEL
- Measure gasoline and oil.
- Pour some gasoline into a clean fuel container.
- Pour in all the oil and agitate well.
- Pour in the rest of the gasoline and agitate for at least one minute.
- Label the container clearly.
FOR YOUR ENGINE LIFE, AVOID:
- Fuel with no oil (raw gasoline).
- Gasohol (can deteriorate rubber/plastic parts).
- Oil for 4-cycle engines or water-cooled 2-cycle engines.
CHAIN OIL
Use motor oil SAE 10W-30 all year round, or SAE 30-40 in summer and SAE 20 in winter.
NOTE: Do not use waste or regenerated oil.
7. Operation
STARTING ENGINE
- Fill fuel and chain oil tanks and tighten caps.
- Set the switch to "I" (ON) position.
- Pull out the choke knob to the second-stage position.
- Hold the saw securely on the ground and pull the starter rope vigorously.
- When the engine ignites, push the choke knob to the first-stage position and pull the starter again.
- Allow the engine to warm up with the throttle lever pulled slightly.
WARNING: Do not start the engine while hanging the chain saw with a hand, as the saw chain may touch your body.
CHECKING OIL SUPPLY
After starting, run the chain at medium speed and check if chain oil is scattered off.
ADJUSTING CARBURETOR
The carburetor is factory adjusted but may require fine-tuning. Ensure air/fuel filters are clean and fuel is properly mixed.
- Adjust H and L needles as specified (H needle -1/4 turn, L needle fixed).
- Start the engine and allow it to warm up.
- Turn the idle adjusting screw (T) counter-clockwise until the saw chain stops. Adjust clockwise if idling speed is too slow.
- Make a test cut and adjust the H needle for best cutting power.
NOTE: Adjust the carburetor with the bar chain attached.
CHAIN BRAKE
The machine has an automatic brake that stops chain rotation upon kickback. It can also be operated manually by pushing the front guard down towards the guide bar. To release, pull up the front guard until a "click" is heard.
IMPORTANT: Confirm brake operation daily. To test, turn off the engine, hold the saw horizontally, release the front handle, and tap the guide bar tip on a stump or wood.
WARNING: If the brake is not effective, contact a dealer. Running the engine at high speed with the brake engaged can cause clutch damage.
STOPPING ENGINE
- Release the throttle lever to allow the engine to idle for a few minutes.
- Put the switch to "O" (STOP) position.
Carburetor anti-freeze mechanism
In temperatures of 0-5°C with high humidity, ice may form in the carburetor. The unit has a ventilation hatch to supply warm air to the engine to prevent icing. The unit should be set to operate in anti-freeze mode when icing is possible.
WARNING: Using anti-freeze mode when temperatures have risen may cause starting or running problems. Always return the unit to normal operating mode when icing is not a danger.
HOW TO SWITCH BETWEEN OPERATING MODES
- Turn off the engine switch.
- Remove the air filter and choke knob.
- Remove the cylinder cover.
- Press the icing cap on the right side of the cylinder cover to remove it.
- Adjust the icing cap so the 'snow' mark faces upwards, then return it to its original position.
- Reassemble the cylinder cover and other parts.
8. Sawing
WARNING: Read "For Safe Operation" before starting. Always follow safety regulations. Use the chain saw only for cutting wood. Do not use it as a lever, for splitting objects, or lock it over fixed stands. Do not hitch unauthorized tools to the P.T.O.
Apply light pressure while running the engine at full throttle. If the saw chain is caught, use a wedge or lever to open the way; do not pull by force.
GUARD AGAINST KICKBACK
Check the chain brake operation before each usage. Run the saw at full throttle for 1-2 seconds and push the front hand guard forward. The chain should stop immediately. If it does not stop, have the brake band and clutch drum replaced.
WARNING: Ensure the chain brake is checked and the chain is sharp to maintain kickback safety. Removal of safety devices, inadequate maintenance, or incorrect replacement of parts can increase the risk of injury.
FELLING A TREE
- Decide the felling direction considering wind, lean, branches, and ease of job.
- Clear the area and arrange a foothold and retreat path.
- Make a notch cut one-third of the way into the tree on the felling side.
- Make a felling cut from the opposite side, slightly higher than the bottom of the notch.
WARNING: Warn neighboring workers of the danger when felling a tree.
Bucking and Limbing
WARNING: Ensure your foothold. Do not stand on the log. Be alert to rolling logs, especially on slopes. Follow "For Safe Operation" instructions to avoid kickback.
Check the direction of bending force in the log before cutting. Finish cutting from the opposite side of the bending direction to prevent the guide bar from being caught.
- A Log lying on the ground: Saw halfway, roll the log, and cut from the opposite side.
- A Log hanging off the ground: In area A, saw up from the bottom one-third and finish by sawing down from the top. In area B, saw down from the top one-third and finish by sawing up from the bottom.
- Cutting Limb of Fallen Tree: Check limb bend direction. Make initial cut from the bent side and finish by sawing from the opposite side.
- Pruning of Standing Tree: Cut up from the bottom, finish down from the top.
WARNING: Do not use unstable foothold or ladder. Do not overreach. Do not cut above shoulder height. Always use both hands to grip the saw.
9. Maintenance
WARNING: Before cleaning, inspecting, or repairing, ensure the engine is stopped and cool. Disconnect the spark plug.
MAINTENANCE AFTER EACH USE
- Air filter: Remove dust by tapping. For stubborn dirt, split the cleaner, brush with gasoline, or blow with compressed air from the inside. Ensure halves click when assembling.
- Oiling port: Dismount the guide bar and check the oiling port for clogging.
- Guide bar: Remove sawdust from the bar groove and oiling port. Grease the nose sprocket.
NOTE: When installing the main filter, ensure grooves fit projections on the cylinder cover.
PERIODICAL SERVICE POINTS
- 1. Cylinder fins: Clean periodically to prevent overheating. Ensure wires and grommets are correctly positioned when installing the cylinder cover.
- 2. Fuel filter: Remove with a wire hook, wash with gasoline, or replace if needed. Pinch the suction pipe end when removing/assembling. Avoid getting filter fibers or dust into the suction pipe.
- 3. Oil tank: Remove oil filter with a wire hook, clean in gasoline. Ensure filter is placed correctly when reassembling. Clean dirt in the tank.
- 4. Spark plug: Clean electrodes with a wire brush and reset the gap to 0.65 mm.
- 5. Sprocket: Check for cracks and wear. Replace if obviously worn. Do not fit a new chain on a worn sprocket, or a worn chain on a new sprocket.
10. Maintenance of Saw Chain and Guide Bar
SAW CHAIN
WARNING: Keep cutters sharp for smooth and safe operation.
Sharpen cutters when sawdust becomes powder-like, extra force is needed, the cut is not straight, vibration increases, or fuel consumption increases.
Cutter setting standards:
WARNING: Wear safety gloves. Ensure the saw chain is held securely and the engine is stopped before filing. Use a round file of proper size (5/32 in. for 91VG chain).
File straight forward, keeping the file position as illustrated. After filing each cutter, check and file the depth gauge to the proper level.
WARNING: Round off the front edge of the depth gauge to reduce kickback risk.
GUIDE BAR
- Reverse the bar occasionally to prevent partial wear.
- Ensure the bar rail is square. Check for wear by applying a ruler to the bar and the outside of a cutter. If a gap is observed, the bar rail is normal. Otherwise, the bar rail is worn and needs correction or replacement.
