UniFi Controller Capabilities
Packed with Features
Use the UniFi Controller to provision thousands of UniFi APs, map networks, manage system traffic, and provision additional UniFi APs.
View Your RF Environment
The RF environment functionality helps detect and troubleshoot nearby interference, analyze radio frequencies, choose optimal AP placement, and configure settings.
Powerful RF Performance Features
Advanced RF performance and configuration features include spectral analysis, airtime fairness, and band steering.
Detailed Analytics
Configurable reporting and analytics aid in managing large user populations and expediting troubleshooting.
Wireless Uplink
Enables wireless connectivity between APs for extended range. One wired UniFi AP uplink supports up to four wireless downlinks on a single band, allowing wireless adoption and real-time network topology changes.
Guest Portal/Hotspot Support
Offers easy customization for Guest Portals, including authentication, Hotspot setup, and the ability to use an external portal server. UniFi's rate limiting for Guest Portal/Hotspot packages allows applying different bandwidth rates, limiting total data usage, and limiting duration of use.
All UniFi APs include Hotspot functionality:
- Built-in support for billing integration using major credit cards.
- Built-in support for voucher-based authentication.
- Built-in Hotspot Manager for voucher creation, guest management, and payment refunds.
- Full customization and branding of Hotspot portal pages.
Multi-Site Management
A single UniFi Controller can manage multiple sites, distributed deployments, and multi-tenancy for managed service providers. Each site is logically separated with its own configuration, maps, statistics, guest portal, and administrator accounts.
WLAN Groups
The UniFi Controller supports flexible configurations for large deployments. Create multiple WLAN groups and assign them to an AP's radio. WLANs can be VLAN tagged, with dynamic VLAN tagging per Wi-Fi station (or RADIUS VLAN) also supported.

802.11ac Technology
Wave 1 SU-MIMO (Single-User, Multiple Input, Multiple Output): Allows an earlier-generation AP to communicate with only one client at a time.
Wave 2 MU-MIMO (Multi-User, Multiple Input, Multiple Output): Allows a Wave 2 AP to communicate with multiple clients simultaneously, significantly increasing multi-user throughput and overall user experience.
MU-MIMO Benefits: Assuming similar conditions, a Wave 2 AP offers up to 75% improvement over a Wave 1 AP, increasing wireless performance and/or serving more clients at the same performance level.
4x4 Spatial Streams: A Wave 2 AP can communicate with multiple MU-MIMO clients concurrently, such as:
- Four 1x1 clients
- Two 2x2 clients
- One 2x2 client and two 1x1 clients
- One 3x3 client and one 1x1 client
A 4x4 Wave 2 AP delivers up to 33% greater performance than a Wave 1 AP that is 3x3 in both radio bands.
Real-World Performance: The UniFi HD AP, being the first UniFi 802.11ac Wave 2 AP, combines MU-MIMO technology and 4x4 spatial streams to deliver up to 125% greater performance than a typical Wave 1 AP.
Client Compatibility: For optimal performance, use MU-MIMO clients. SU-MIMO clients also benefit, gaining up to 10-20% greater performance.
Note: Actual performance values may vary depending on environmental and installation conditions.
High-Density Scenarios
The UniFi HD AP is recommended for high-density environments like concert venues or outdoor fairs with numerous clients in a small space.
Both Wave 1 and Wave 2 APs offer 28 independent channels (three for 2.4 GHz, twenty-five for 5 GHz including DFS). Using the 5 GHz band allows for smaller cells, supporting more clients per cell when multiple APs are deployed.
With MU-MIMO and 4x4 spatial streams, the UniFi HD AP supports more than triple the number of users compared to a typical Wave 1 AP.

Aggregate Throughput Comparisons
[Diagram Description: Bar charts illustrating aggregate throughput improvements.]
- Single-Client Aggregate Throughput: UniFi HD AP achieves 940 Mbps compared to UniFi AC Pro AP's 600 Mbps, a 56% improvement.
- 10-Client Aggregate Throughput: UniFi HD AP achieves 440 Mbps compared to UniFi AC Pro AP's 130 Mbps, a 238% improvement.
- 100-Client Aggregate Throughput: UniFi HD AP achieves 300 Mbps, a 900% improvement over the UniFi AC Pro AP (data rate not specified for AC Pro in this chart, but implied to be lower).
