Vivitar Automatic T-4 Lens System

Owner's Manual

Introduction

The Vivitar Automatic T-4 Lens System is a complete automatic lens line that continues to expand. With a wide range of focal lengths available, the T-4 line offers photographers complete control over their subjects in virtually any photographic situation.

Designed by photographers for photographers, each T-4 lens is computer-designed for optimal optical performance. These lenses are precision-engineered and field-tested for optical and mechanical reliability, delivering superb line resolution and contrast. This translates to crisp, clear images with exceptional tonal gradation and color balance for the photographer.

The Vivitar T-4 Lens system provides a versatile solution for every photographic need, promising many years of picture-taking enjoyment.

The Adapters

Beyond exceptional optical and mechanical performance, the Vivitar Automatic T-4 Lens System offers the significant benefit of complete interchangeability between two or more 35mm single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras with different lens mounts. If you currently use two different SLRs, or plan to replace your current camera with one from a different manufacturer, you can continue to use your entire range of Vivitar T-4 Lenses simply by changing the automatic T-4 Adapter. These adapters are available for most 35mm SLR camera mounts and feature automatic diaphragm mechanisms and full meter coupling to the camera's behind-the-lens exposure controls.

The unique breech-lock design of a Vivitar T-4 Adapter attaches without the need for tools, bands, rings, or special couplings. When mounted on a T-4 Lens, it creates a combination with the integrity of your camera's normal lens, making accidental separation or loosening through wear virtually impossible.

Getting Acquainted with Your Lens

The controls and features of a typical Vivitar T-4 Lens are illustrated and described below.

Lens Components Diagram Description

The diagram shows a Vivitar T-4 lens with numbered components:

  • 1. Lens Lock Ring: Used to secure the lens or adapter.
  • 2. Adapter Release Button: Press this button to release the adapter.
  • 3. Orange Triangle: Alignment mark for specific camera mounts.
  • 4. Green Triangle: Alignment mark for other specific camera mounts.
  • 5. Aperture Ring: Controls the lens aperture.
  • 6. Tripod Socket Set Screw: Secures the tripod socket.
  • 7. Tripod Socket Collar: Part of the tripod mounting system.
  • 8. Aperture Scale: Indicates the selected aperture.
  • 9. Depth of Field Scale: Shows the range of acceptable focus.
  • 10. Infrared Index Mark: A mark used for focusing with infrared film.
  • 11. Distance Scales: Indicates the focus distance in feet and meters.
  • 12. Focusing Ring: Rotates to adjust the focus.
  • 13. Retractable Lens Hood: Built-in hood that can be extended or retracted.
  • 14. Filter Thread: For attaching filters.

Detailed Scale Descriptions:

Depth-of-Field Scale: This scale indicates the range of subjects that will appear in sharp focus on the film for a given aperture. The range varies with the selected aperture and is marked by reference indicators bordering the distance index mark. Smaller apertures (numerically higher f-numbers) result in a deeper depth-of-field, and vice versa.

Infrared Index Marks: The red marking on the right half of the depth-of-field scale serves as a focusing reference when using infrared film. To use it, focus normally, note the distance indicated by the distance index mark, then rotate the lens barrel until the distance reading aligns with the Infrared Index Mark. The lens is then focused for infrared photography.

Distance Scale: This scale, presented in both feet and meters, shows the distance between the subject in focus and the film surface within your camera.

Preparing the Lens for Mounting

With a little practice, you can install an adapter on your lens in under 10 seconds. For the first installation, proceed slowly, follow directions carefully, and do not force anything.

  1. First, press the adapter release button [Button 2] and rotate the lock ring [Ring 1] toward the "O" position (counterclockwise) as far as it will go.
  2. Remove the rear plastic protective cap by simply lifting it off.

The lens is now ready for the installation of the adapter designed for your camera.

Attaching the Adapter to Your Lens

Follow these steps to attach the adapter to your lens:

  1. Set Aperture Ring: Set your lens aperture ring to the proper triangle alignment mark. Use the [Orange Triangle] for Mamiya/Sekor-Pentax, Nikon, Canon, Miranda, Petri FT, and Exakta mounts. Use the [Green Triangle] for Minolta, Topcon, and Leicaflex SL mounts.
  2. Adjust Meter Coupling Pin: (For Nikon, Miranda, Minolta, Topcon, and Leicaflex SL adapters only). Set the meter coupling pin on your adapter opposite the "Set Pin Here" indicator. You will feel a definite click when the coupling pin is in its proper position.
  3. Align Silver Arrows: With the lens lock ring turned fully to the "O" position, match the silver arrows on both the lens and the adapter so that one is directly over the other. Carefully lower the adapter onto the lens. A gentle movement of the adapter might be necessary to ensure a proper fit.
  4. Secure Lens Lock Ring: With the adapter in its correct position, press down on it slightly to hold it in place. Rotate the lens lock ring firmly toward the "L" position (clockwise) until it locks into place. The adapter is now fully locked, and your lens is ready to mount on your camera.

Removing the Adapter from Your Lens

To remove the adapter:

  1. Press the adapter release button and firmly rotate the lens lock ring toward the "O" position (counterclockwise) as far as it will go.
  2. Remove the adapter simply by lifting it off.

Keeping Your Lens in Top Condition

Proper care will ensure the longevity and performance of your lens:

  1. Dust Prevention: Keep your lens dust-free by ensuring both the front and rear lens caps are on when the lens is not in use.
  2. Cleaning: Clean your lens by blowing it with an air brush or wiping it lightly with a camel hair brush or lens tissue. In extreme cases, use a soft cotton cloth moistened with denatured alcohol. Never rub the lens surface or use any abrasive material.
  3. Storage: Always store your lens in a cool, dry place. It is advisable to pack it with silica gel for added protection against moisture.
