Safety Instructions

Rechargeable Built-in Battery
The device contains a built-in Li-polymer battery that cannot be replaced by the customer. Replacement must be done by authorized service centers or Philips partners. Batteries contain environmentally polluting substances and should be disposed of at official collection points.
Data Reset
The Philips VoiceTracer has 8 GB of internal storage. Performing a factory data reset will delete all data. Back up your data before resetting. Formatting the memory on a computer may cause incompatibilities; format only on the device.
Hearing Protection
- Set the volume to a moderate level and avoid listening for excessively long periods.
- Be careful when adjusting the volume to a level that could damage your hearing.
- Do not turn the volume so high that you cannot hear your surroundings.
- Exercise caution or temporarily discontinue use in potentially dangerous situations.

3. Get Started
Charging the Battery
Charge the built-in battery before first use or if the device has been unused for an extended period. A full charge takes approximately 3 hours. Charge the device every 6 months, even when not in use, to prevent deep discharge. A charging battery icon will appear on the screen, and the Record/Status LED will flash orange.
Turn the Device On and Off
Slide and hold the Power switch on the right side downwards for three seconds to turn the device on or off.
Key Lock
To prevent unintended operations, slide the Power switch upwards towards the lock symbol to lock the device. The lock symbol will appear on the screen, and all buttons will be locked. Slide the Power switch downwards to unlock.
Connect to a Computer
Use the supplied USB cable to connect the device to your computer. It will be recognized as a mass storage device without needing any software installation. Refer to the "Charging the battery" illustration on page [7] for connection details.
Set the Date and Time
- In stop mode, press the Right function button to open the settings panel.
- Press the Record button to select "All settings".
- Press the Right function button to enter "Device settings".
- Navigate to "Date & time" using the Down button and press the Record button to confirm.
- Use the Up/Down buttons to adjust Date, Date format, and Time. Use the Forward and Backward buttons to change your selections.
- Press the Record button to confirm settings.
- Press the Back button to return to the stop mode screen.
Set the Device Language
- In stop mode, press the Right function button to open the settings panel.
- Press the Record button to select "All settings".
- Press the Right function button to enter "Device settings".
- Press the Record button to select "Language".
- Navigate to your desired language using the Up/Down buttons and press the Record button to confirm.
- Press the Back button to return to the stop mode screen.
4. Recording
Record a File
Before You Start Recording
Ensure the device has sufficient battery power. A low battery icon will appear when the battery is nearly discharged. The device will turn off automatically, and the current recording will be saved.
Select the folder where your recording will be saved. You can store up to 100 files in each folder (A, B, C, D). If a folder is full, subsequent recordings will be stored in the next available folder. It is recommended to make a test recording to find the best settings.
Start a New Recording
- In stop mode, press the Left function button to start a new recording. The "New file mode" screen appears.
- Press the Right function button to open the settings panel.
- To select a save folder: Navigate to "Folder" using the Up/Down buttons and press the Record button. Navigate to your desired folder and press the Record button to confirm. Press the Back button to return to the stop mode screen.
- To adjust recording settings: Navigate to your desired setting using the Up/Down buttons and press the Record button to confirm. Press the Back button to return to the stop mode screen.
- Press the Record button to start recording. The Record/Status LED illuminates red.
- Press the Record button again to stop recording. The recording is saved to the selected folder.
Edit a File
You can edit existing recordings by appending or overwriting parts.
Append:
Add additional recording parts to the end of an existing recording. In stop mode, press the Record button. If the cursor is at the end of the recording, a new part is added. If the cursor is at the beginning, the editing panel opens. Select "Append" and press the Record button.
Overwrite:
Overwrite an existing recording part from any point within the recording. In playback mode, press the Play/Stop button to stop at the desired point. Press the Record button. The editing panel opens. Select "Overwrite" and press the Record button.
5. Playback
Play Back Files
Start and Stop Playback
- In stop mode, use the Previous track or Next track button to navigate to your desired recording. Press the Play/Stop button to start playback. The Record/Play indicator illuminates green. Alternatively, press the File list button and use the Up/Down buttons to navigate to your recording, then press Play/Stop.
- Adjust volume using the Up/Down buttons.
- Press the Play/Stop button to stop playback. Press it again to resume.
Fast Rewind or Fast Forward
In playback or stop mode, press and hold the Backward or Forward button to jump to a specific part of the recording. Release the button when you reach the desired point.
Play Back Files from a Selected Folder
- In stop mode, press the File list button. All voice recordings are displayed.
- Press the Left function button to open the folder panel.
- Navigate to your desired folder using the Up/Down buttons and press the Record button to confirm. Only files in the selected folder will be displayed.
Delete Files
- In stop mode or playback mode, press the Right function button to open the settings panel.
- Navigate to "Delete" using the Up/Down buttons and press the Record button to confirm.
6. Settings
Settings Mode
Access settings mode by pressing the Right function button in stop mode, then select "All settings" by pressing the Record button. Navigate between settings using the Up/Down buttons and select a setting by pressing the Record button.
Settings are categorized into:

Recording Settings
- Scene: Select a scene (e.g., Lecture, Interview, Meeting, Music) for optimized recording parameters. Choose "Custom" to define your own settings.
- Format: Select the recording format (e.g., MP3, PCM) suitable for your needs.
- Mic sensitivity: Adjust microphone sensitivity based on background noise and sound source distance.
- Limiter: Prevents distortion from loud sounds by automatically reducing microphone sensitivity.
- Noise cut: Reduces background noise for clearer audio recordings.
- Wind filter: Reduces wind noise in windy environments.
- Folder: Select the folder for saving recordings.
- Voice activation: Starts recording automatically when you speak and pauses after silence.
- Edit mode: Select behavior for editing recordings (Append/Overwrite).
- Pre-recording: Records a few seconds before the event starts.
- Timer: Set a specific date and time for recording to start and stop.
- Auto divide: Automatically splits recordings into files at set intervals (15, 30, 60 minutes).
- Auto bookmark: Automatically sets bookmarks at preset time intervals.
- External input: Choose input sources for optimal recording quality.
Playback Settings
- Play mode: Choose playback options.
- Equalizer: Select music equalization presets (Classical, Jazz, Pop, Rock).
- ClearVoice: Enhances playback clarity, especially for quiet voices.
Device Settings
- Language: Select the device language.
- Brightness: Adjust screen brightness.
- Backlight: Reduce backlight time to save battery. The backlight turns off automatically after a period of inactivity.
- Date & time: Set the system date and time.
- Recording light: Enable the Record/Status LED to illuminate red during recording.
- Auto Off: Set a time for the device to automatically turn off when not in use.
- Device sounds: Enable or disable device sounds like key tones and power on/off sounds.
- Format storage: Format the device's internal storage and delete all data. Refer to "Reset data" on page [13].
- Reset settings: Reset menu settings to their factory defaults. Refer to "Reset settings" on page [13].
- Information: View device information such as available memory and firmware version.
7. Device and Data Management
Transfer Data to the Computer
Connect the device to your computer using the USB cable. Your VoiceTracer will be recognized as a mass storage device. Open Windows Explorer or Mac Finder to access the device. Select, copy, cut, or drag files to your computer.
Reset Your Device and Data
Device Reset
If the device experiences software issues (freezing, slow response), you can reset it. Press and hold the reset button with a pointed object. Then, slide and hold the Power switch downwards for three seconds to restart the device.
Reset Data
Formatting the device will delete all data. Back up important data before proceeding. Menu settings will remain after a data reset.
- In stop mode, press the Right function button to open the settings panel.
- Press the Record button to select "All settings".
- Press the Right function button to enter "Device settings".
- Navigate to "Format storage" using the Up/Down buttons and press the Record button.
- Select "Delete". All data will be deleted from the internal storage.
Reset Settings
Reset menu settings to their default state.
- In stop mode, press the Right function button to open the settings panel.
- Press the Record button to select "All settings".
- Press the Right function button to enter "Device settings".
- Navigate to "Reset settings" using the Up/Down buttons and press the Record button to confirm.
- Select "Reset". All settings will be reset to their default state.
Updating Your Device
Firmware updates correct errors and improve product performance. Check the product website www.voicetracer.com/help for new firmware versions.
Update Your VoiceTracer
- Connect the device to your computer via the USB cable. A charging battery icon appears, and the Record/Status LED flashes orange.
- Download the firmware update file for your model from www.voicetracer.com/help.
- Unzip the downloaded file.
- Open Windows Explorer or Mac Finder and double-click the VoiceTracer drive.
- Copy the firmware update file to the root directory of the device. The Record/Status LED flashes orange during the process and stops when complete.
- Disconnect the device from the computer. The firmware updates automatically, and the "Firmware update" window is displayed. The device will switch off automatically upon completion.
8. Troubleshooting
Refer to the table below for common problems and their solutions. If the issue persists, contact your Philips support partner.
