Suunto Oy's Climate Efforts
Emission reporting, reduction roadmap, and targets
Suunto Oy has been tracking its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions since 2009, adhering to the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard. The reporting encompasses emissions from Suunto's own operations (Scopes 1 and 2) and relevant value chain categories (Scope 3), with Scope 3 calculations commencing in 2023. Since 2023, emissions reporting includes offices in the UK and France, in addition to facilities in Tampere and Vantaa, Finland. The majority of Suunto's emissions originate from its value chain, specifically purchased goods and services. Suunto is developing a carbon reduction roadmap with targets set for 2026, aligning with the Science Based Targets initiative and the 1.5 °C climate goal outlined in the Paris Agreement.
Emission reduction actions and impact
Since 2021, Suunto has utilized 100% renewable energy (electricity and district heating) at its Finnish factory and office, significantly reducing its operational emissions. In 2024, the UK office transitioned to renewable electricity. Suunto is implementing measures to decrease electricity consumption and enhance energy efficiency. The company has maintained a goal of zero landfill waste for the past six years, ensuring all waste is recycled or reused. Suunto designs its products for longevity and repairability, prioritizing repairs over replacements when service is required. Returned watches are refurbished to extend their lifespan.
Voluntary climate actions and carbon offsetting
In 2024, Suunto offset 40 tCO2e of emissions from its own operations (Scope 1) and energy consumption (Scope 2) through the Envira Amazonia Project, a REDD+ initiative in Brazil focused on tropical rainforest protection, biodiversity preservation, and local community benefits. Suunto offsets the lifetime emissions of its watch models, including Suunto 9 Peak, 9 Peak Pro, Vertical, Race, Ocean, Race S, and Run, as well as all future watch models. In 2024, a total of 1,779 tCO2e was offset. In 2023, 933.6 tCO2e were offset, and in 2022, 286.3 tCO2e were offset, utilizing VCS-certified carbon credits from a reforestation and biodiversity project managed by Tree-Nation. To promote awareness and encourage the Suunto community to reduce their carbon emissions, a commuting feature was introduced in the Suunto app, enabling users to track their CO2e savings from choosing human-powered transportation over private vehicles.
Standards, certificates, and external verification
All Suunto's emission calculations are conducted and verified by external partners in accordance with the GHG Protocol and relevant ISO standards. Corporate emissions are calculated following the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard. Life cycle assessment calculations are performed according to the GHG Protocol Product Life Cycle Accounting and Reporting Standard and are third-party verified in line with ISO 14025 and ISO 14040/14044. All voluntary carbon credits purchased by Suunto are Verified Carbon Units (VCUs), certified under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS).
