Ensure that the guide rails (10) on the guard (6) are correctly aligned with the guide rails (11) on the strimmer head (8). Secure the guard (6) with the screw (12). Warning! Never use the tool unless the guard is properly fitted.

Adjusting the Position of the Secondary Handle (Figure C)

Figure C illustrates adjusting the second handle (5) for optimum balance and comfort. Lift the locking clamp (14) on the secondary handle. Gently slide the secondary handle (5) up or down the tube (13) to the desired height. Secure the locking clamp (14) once the desired position has been achieved.

Adjusting the Height of the Tool (Figure D)

Figure D shows the telescopic mechanism for adjusting the tool to a comfortable height. There are multiple height settings. To adjust the height setting, release the height adjust locking clamp (15). Gently pull the tube (13) up or down to the desired height. Close the height adjust locking clamp (15).

Releasing the Cutting Line

In transit, the cutting line is taped to the spool housing. Warning! Before assembly, remove the battery from the tool. Remove the tape holding the cutting line to the spool housing (7).

Operation

Warning! Let the tool work at its own pace. Do not overload.

Charging the Battery (Figure E)

Figure E shows the charging process. The battery needs to be charged before first use and whenever it fails to produce sufficient power. The battery may become warm while charging; this is normal. Warning! Do not charge the battery at ambient temperatures below 10 °C or above 40 °C. Recommended charging temperature: approximately 24 °C. The charger will not charge a battery if the cell temperature is below approximately 10 °C or above 40 °C. The battery should be left in the charger, and charging will begin automatically when the cell temperature is within range.

  • To charge the battery (4), insert it into the charger (16). The battery will only fit one way; do not force. Ensure the battery is fully seated.
  • Plug in the charger and switch on at the mains. The charging indicator (16a) will flash green continuously (slowly) while charging. The charge is complete when the charging indicator (16a) lights green continuously. The charger and battery can be left connected indefinitely with the LED illuminated. The LED will change to flashing green (charging) state as the charger occasionally tops up the battery charge. The charging indicator (16a) will be lit as long as the battery is connected to the plugged-in charger.
  • Charge discharged batteries within 1 week. Battery life will be greatly diminished if stored in a discharged state.

Charger Diagnostics

If the charger detects a weak or damaged battery, the charging indicator (16a) will flash red at a fast rate. Proceed as follows:

  • Re-insert the battery (4).
  • If the charging indicator continues flashing red at a fast rate, use a different battery to determine if the charging process works properly.
  • If the replaced battery charges correctly, the original battery is defective and should be returned to a service centre for recycling.
  • If the new battery gives the same indication as the original battery, take the charger to be tested at an authorised service centre.

Note: It may take as long as 30 minutes to determine that the battery is defective. If the battery is too hot or too cold, the LED will alternately blink red, fast and slow, one flash at each speed and repeat.

State of Charge Indicator (Figure E)

The battery is fitted with a state of charge indicator. This can be used to display the current level of charge in the battery during use and during charging. Press the state of charge indicator button (4a).

Fitting and Removing the Battery (Figure F)

Figure F illustrates battery fitting and removal. To fit the battery (4), line it up with the receptacle on the tool and slide it in until it snaps into place. To remove the battery, push the release button (4b) while simultaneously pulling the battery out of the receptacle.

Setting the Tool to Trimming or Edging Mode (Figures G, H, I)

The tool can be used in trimming mode (Figure G) or edging mode (Figures H, I). In trimming mode, the trimmer head should be in the position shown in Figure G, with the edge guide (9) lifted to the closed position. If it is not:

  • Remove the battery from the tool.
  • Press and hold the head release button (17).
  • Whilst holding the handle, rotate the head (8) clockwise.
  • Release the head release button (17).
  • Lift the edge guide (9) into the closed position.

Note: The head will only rotate in one direction.

For edging mode (Figure H), the trimmer head should be in the position shown in Figure H, with the edge guide (9) lowered to the open position. If it is not:

  • Remove the battery from the tool.
  • Press and hold the head release button (17).
  • Whilst holding the handle, rotate the head (8) anti-clockwise.
  • Release the head release button (17).
  • Drop the edge guide into the open position. Ensure that the edging guide (9) is all the way down; an audible click will be heard.

Note: The head will only rotate in one direction.

Switching On and Off (Figure J)

Figure J shows the controls for switching the tool on and off. To switch the tool on, press and hold the lock off button (3) then squeeze the trigger lever (1). Once the tool is running, you may release the lock off button (3). To switch the tool off, release the trigger lever. Warning! Never attempt to lock the trigger lever in the on position.

POWERCOMMAND™ Button (BCSTA536 only) (Figure J)

The POWERCOMMAND™ feature allows you to advance the length of cutting line available while trimming. To extend the cutting line, fully depress the POWERCOMMAND™ button (18) while trimming and then release. Note! The trimmer will stop cutting when the POWERCOMMAND™ button is pressed and will resume cutting when released. For maximum line length, press the button multiple times until you hear the cutting line hitting the guard. Note! Do not continue to press the POWERCOMMAND™ button once the maximum length is reached. This will result in overfeeding and will consume string quickly.

Hints for Optimum Use

General

In order to achieve optimum cutting results, only cut dry grass.

Trimming (Figures K, L)

Figure K shows how to hold the tool for trimming. Gently swing the trimmer from side to side as shown in Figure L. When cutting long grass, work in stages from the top. Take small cuts. Keep the tool away from hard objects and delicate plants. Cutting line will wear faster and require more feeding if the cutting is done along pavements or other abrasive surfaces or heavier weeds are being cut. If the tool starts running slowly, reduce the load.

Edging (Figure M)

Optimum cutting results are achieved on edges deeper than 50 mm. Do not use the tool to create edges; use an edging spade. Guide the tool as shown in Figure M. To make a closer cut, slightly tilt the tool.

Fitting a New Spool of Cutting Line (Figures N, O)

Replacement spools of cutting line are available from your BLACK+DECKER dealer (cat. no. A6481). Three spool packs of cutting line are also available (cat. no. A6485).

  • Remove the battery from the tool.
  • Figure N shows how to remove the spool cover. Keep the tabs (23) depressed and remove the spool cover (24) from the housing (7).
  • Remove the empty spool (25) from the housing.
  • Remove any dirt and grass from the spool cover and housing.
  • Take the new spool and push it onto the boss in the housing. Rotate the spool slightly until it is seated.
  • Figure O shows the line exit. Unclip the end of the cutting line and guide the line into the eyelet (26). The line should protrude approximately 11 cm from the spool cover as shown.
  • Align the tabs (23) on the spool cover with the cut outs (21) in the housing.
  • Push the cover onto the housing until it snaps securely into place.
  • Warning! If the cutting lines protrude beyond the trimming blade (22), cut them off so that they just reach the blade.

Winding New Line onto an Empty Spool (Figures P, Q)

You may wind new cutting line onto an empty spool. Replacement packs of cutting line are available from your BLACK+DECKER dealer (cat. no. A6170 [25m], A6171 [40m]).

  • Remove the empty spool from the tool as described above.
  • Remove any remaining cutting line from the spool.
  • Figure P shows the start of winding. Feed 2 cm of cutting line into the hole (31) in the spool.
  • Bend the cutting line and anchor it in the L-shaped slot (27).
  • Figure Q shows winding the line. Wind the cutting line onto the spool in the direction of the arrow. Make sure to wind the line on neatly and in layers. Do not criss-cross.
  • When the wound cutting line reaches the recesses (28), cut the line. Let the line protrude approximately 11 cm from the spool and hold a finger on the line to keep it in place.
  • Proceed as described above to fit the spool on the tool.
  • Warning! Only use the appropriate type of BLACK+DECKER cutting line.

Troubleshooting

If your tool seems not to operate properly, follow the instructions below. If this does not solve the problem, please contact your local BLACK+DECKER repair agent.

Warning! Before proceeding, remove the battery from the tool.

Appliance runs slowly

  • Check that the spool housing can rotate freely. Carefully clean it if necessary.
  • Check that the cutting line does not protrude more than 11 cm from the spool housing. If it does, cut it off so that it just reaches the line trimming blade.

POWERCOMMAND™ feed does not work (BCSTE636 only)

  • Remove the spool cap.
  • Pull the cutting line until it protrudes approximately 136mm from the spool. If insufficient cutting line is left on the spool, install a new spool of cutting line.
  • Ensure the line is not crisscrossed on the spool as detailed in Figure Q. If it is, unwind the cutting line, then wind it back on the spool neatly so that the lines do not cross.
  • Ensure the beginning of the cutting line is pulled tight against the spool.
  • Align the tabs on the spool cap with the cut outs in the housing.
  • Push the spool cap onto the housing until it snaps securely into place.
  • If the cutting line protrudes beyond the trimming blade, cut it off so that it just reaches the blade.

If the POWERCOMMAND™ line feed still does not work or the spool is jammed, try the following suggestions:

  • Carefully clean the spool and housing.
  • Remove the spool and check if the lever in the spool housing can move freely.
  • Remove the spool and unwind the cutting line, then wind it on neatly again. Replace the spool into the housing.
