Downloading the App and Creating an Account

You Will Need

Download the Sensi app

The Sensi Smart Thermostat is a Wi-Fi enabled device. To install and configure your thermostat correctly, you must use the Sensi app. Download the Sensi app to your smartphone or tablet; it is a free download. The Sensi app requires the following Operating System (OS) software:

Note: In the iOS App Store, the Sensi App may only appear with an "iPhone only" search. On an iPad, you may need to adjust your search criteria.

Create an account

When you download the Sensi app, you will be prompted to create an account. This is required to access your thermostat remotely and use all Sensi features. Use a valid email address and a password of your choosing. Remember this email address and password, as your Sensi thermostat will be linked to it upon registration.

Installing the Sensi Thermostat

Installation

Once you have downloaded the Sensi app and created an account, you are ready to install the thermostat to your wall and connect it to Wi-Fi. If no thermostats are registered, tap the '+' sign to add a thermostat, then choose your purchased model (1F87U-42WF series or ST55 series). You can check your model number on the back of the thermostat faceplate.

Install Path

After creating an account and signing in, the app will ask if the thermostat is already on the wall. Choose:

No, it needs to be installed

This option will walk you through the entire installation process, including identifying and connecting your wiring, as well as connecting to Wi-Fi. The Sensi app provides a step-by-step guide.

Gather Tools and Package Contents

Gather the necessary tools for installation:

Visual Description: An app screen displays the title "Gather Tools and Package Contents" and lists the required tools.

Turn Off Power

Crucial Safety Step: Turn off the power to your heating and air conditioning system before handling your thermostat wires. Use your fuse box or the switch next to your furnace. Confirm power is OFF by trying to turn on heating or cooling on your old thermostat.

Visual Description: An app screen shows "Turn Off Power" with a caution symbol and instructions to turn off power at the fuse box or furnace switch.

Remove Old Thermostat Cover

Remove the thermostat cover using a screwdriver or by pushing the pressure latch. Some covers pull off easily, while others may need a screwdriver to release.

Visual Description: An app screen shows "Remove the thermostat cover" with instructions on using a screwdriver or pressure latch.

Photograph Your Wiring

Important: The Sensi app will prompt you to take a picture of your existing thermostat and old wiring for later reference. This is helpful for troubleshooting with technical support. The picture will be saved to your camera roll or photo gallery.

Visual Description: An app screen shows "Take a photo of your wiring" with an icon of a camera and text indicating the photo is saved to the camera roll.

Throw Away Any Jumper Wires

Sensi thermostats have a built-in jumper wire, so you will not need any jumper wires from your old unit. Remove any jumper wires you find.

Visual Description: An app screen shows "Throw away any jumper wires" with an arrow pointing to a jumper wire being removed.

Choose Wire Terminals

Select the terminal labels that have wires attached to them on your old thermostat. The app will indicate if you have a valid configuration. For compatibility information or if you receive an invalid configuration message, visit sensi.emerson.com/en-ua/compatibility.

A c-wire (common wire) is required for heat-only, cool-only, and heat pump applications. For more information on installing a c-wire, visit sensi.emerson.com/en-us/c-wire.

Visual Description: An app screen displays a grid of thermostat terminal labels (R, W, Y, G, C, etc.) where users select terminals with attached wires.

System Type

Select the type of system you have (e.g., Gas, Electric, Boiler/Radiant).

Visual Description: An app screen prompts the user to "Select furnace type" with options like Gas, Electric, and Boiler/Radiant.

Label Your Wires

Using the provided wire label stickers, label your wires by removing one wire at a time from its terminal and applying the corresponding sticker. Your labels may not match exactly; for example, a 'W' wire might use a 'W/E' sticker. This is acceptable.

Visual Description: An app screen shows "Label your wires" with examples of wire labels and a visual of labeling wires on an old thermostat.

Disconnect Wires and Remove Base

After all wires are labeled, remove the old thermostat base from the wall. Secure the wires by wrapping them around a pencil to prevent them from falling back into the wall.

Visual Description: An app screen shows "Disconnect wires and remove base" with instructions on securing wires.

Install Sensi Base

Use the provided mounting screws to secure the Sensi base to the wall. Drill holes and insert wall anchors if necessary.

Visual Description: An app screen shows "Install new thermostat base" with instructions on mounting.

Connect the Wires

Once the Sensi base is mounted, insert the wires into the corresponding terminal blocks and tighten the screws to secure each wire.

Visual Description: An app screen shows "Connect the wires" with a visual of inserting wires into terminal blocks and tightening screws.

Attach Cover

Push the front display onto the thermostat base until it snaps securely into place. Ensure any battery tags are pulled.

Visual Description: An app screen shows "Pull battery tag and attach cover" with instructions to push the faceplate until secure.

Turn On Power

Turn the power back on to your heating or air conditioning system.

Visual Description: An app screen shows "Turn on power" with instructions to restore power.

Connecting to Wi-Fi

This section covers connecting your thermostat to Wi-Fi. If you chose "No, it needs to be installed," the app provided instructions for wiring first. If your Sensi thermostat was professionally installed or you have already installed and wired it but not yet connected to Wi-Fi, choose "Yes, it is on the wall." The app will then proceed directly to Wi-Fi connection.

BROADCAST SENSI NETWORK

On the thermostat, press Menu, then press Mode. The Wi-Fi icon in the upper left-hand corner will flash, and a version indicator (00, 11, or 22) will be displayed in the middle of the thermostat.

Visual Description: App screens show "Start Wi-Fi Radio" and "Identify Sensi Model" with options for different display indicators (00, 11, 22).

CONNECT YOUR SENSI THERMOSTAT TO YOUR WI-FI NETWORK WITH THE SENSI APP

Follow the step-by-step instructions within the Sensi app. The Wi-Fi connection process may vary slightly based on your device's operating system (iOS/Android), Sensi app version, and your Sensi thermostat version. For iPhone/iPad users, if you see "11" or "22" displayed, you may have the option to connect with Apple HomeKit.

After connecting to the Sensi network, you will enter the Sensi password (found on the Welcome Guide or thermostat back as "Sensi Security Code"). Then, you will connect to your Wi-Fi network.

Name Thermostat

You can select a suggested name or create a custom name for your Sensi Thermostat. Press "Next" to continue.

Visual Description: An app screen shows "Name your thermostat" with suggested names and an option for a custom name.

Register Thermostat

After successfully connecting, the app will prompt you to register the thermostat. You can choose the "Locate Me" option or manually enter your street address, city, state, zip code, country, and time zone. Press "Next" to continue.

Visual Description: An app screen shows "Register Thermostat" with options to "Locate Me" or fill in details manually.

Contractor Information

If a contractor professionally installed your thermostat and is a registered Sensi partner, they may have the option to input their phone number here. If no registered number is available, simply press "Next" to continue.

Start Using Sensi

Congratulations on successfully installing Sensi! Press "Start Using Sensi Thermostat" to open the main screen of the app.

Visual Description: An app screen displays "Setup Complete" and "Start Using Sensi Thermostat".
