Downloading the App and Creating an Account
You Will Need
- Sensi Password (found on the back of the Welcome Guide or thermostat face plate labeled "Sensi Security Code")
- Wi-Fi Network Name/SSID (ensure it is a 2.4GHz network)
- Wi-Fi Network Password
- Screwdriver
- Hardware included in Sensi Smart thermostat packaging
Download the Sensi app
The Sensi Smart Thermostat is a Wi-Fi enabled device. To install and configure your thermostat correctly, you must use the Sensi app. Download the Sensi app to your smartphone or tablet; it is a free download. The Sensi app requires the following Operating System (OS) software:
- Android (Google Play) version 5.0 or later
- iOS (Apple) version 10.0 or later
Note: In the iOS App Store, the Sensi App may only appear with an "iPhone only" search. On an iPad, you may need to adjust your search criteria.
Create an account
When you download the Sensi app, you will be prompted to create an account. This is required to access your thermostat remotely and use all Sensi features. Use a valid email address and a password of your choosing. Remember this email address and password, as your Sensi thermostat will be linked to it upon registration.
Installing the Sensi Thermostat
Installation
Once you have downloaded the Sensi app and created an account, you are ready to install the thermostat to your wall and connect it to Wi-Fi. If no thermostats are registered, tap the '+' sign to add a thermostat, then choose your purchased model (1F87U-42WF series or ST55 series). You can check your model number on the back of the thermostat faceplate.
Install Path
After creating an account and signing in, the app will ask if the thermostat is already on the wall. Choose:
- "No, it needs to be installed": This option guides you through the entire installation process, including wiring identification and connection, and Wi-Fi setup. Use this if the thermostat was not professionally installed.
- "Yes, it is on the wall": This option is for connecting your thermostat to Wi-Fi only, typically if a professional installed it.
No, it needs to be installed
This option will walk you through the entire installation process, including identifying and connecting your wiring, as well as connecting to Wi-Fi. The Sensi app provides a step-by-step guide.
Gather Tools and Package Contents
Gather the necessary tools for installation:
- Phillips and/or Flathead Screwdriver
- Drill with a 3/16" (4 mm) bit
- Wire Cutter
- Needle-nose pliers (may be needed)

Turn Off Power
Crucial Safety Step: Turn off the power to your heating and air conditioning system before handling your thermostat wires. Use your fuse box or the switch next to your furnace. Confirm power is OFF by trying to turn on heating or cooling on your old thermostat.

Remove Old Thermostat Cover
Remove the thermostat cover using a screwdriver or by pushing the pressure latch. Some covers pull off easily, while others may need a screwdriver to release.

Photograph Your Wiring
Important: The Sensi app will prompt you to take a picture of your existing thermostat and old wiring for later reference. This is helpful for troubleshooting with technical support. The picture will be saved to your camera roll or photo gallery.

Throw Away Any Jumper Wires
Sensi thermostats have a built-in jumper wire, so you will not need any jumper wires from your old unit. Remove any jumper wires you find.

Choose Wire Terminals
Select the terminal labels that have wires attached to them on your old thermostat. The app will indicate if you have a valid configuration. For compatibility information or if you receive an invalid configuration message, visit sensi.emerson.com/en-ua/compatibility.
A c-wire (common wire) is required for heat-only, cool-only, and heat pump applications. For more information on installing a c-wire, visit sensi.emerson.com/en-us/c-wire.

System Type
Select the type of system you have (e.g., Gas, Electric, Boiler/Radiant).

Label Your Wires
Using the provided wire label stickers, label your wires by removing one wire at a time from its terminal and applying the corresponding sticker. Your labels may not match exactly; for example, a 'W' wire might use a 'W/E' sticker. This is acceptable.

Disconnect Wires and Remove Base
After all wires are labeled, remove the old thermostat base from the wall. Secure the wires by wrapping them around a pencil to prevent them from falling back into the wall.

Install Sensi Base
Use the provided mounting screws to secure the Sensi base to the wall. Drill holes and insert wall anchors if necessary.

Connect the Wires
Once the Sensi base is mounted, insert the wires into the corresponding terminal blocks and tighten the screws to secure each wire.

Attach Cover
Push the front display onto the thermostat base until it snaps securely into place. Ensure any battery tags are pulled.

Turn On Power
Turn the power back on to your heating or air conditioning system.

Connecting to Wi-Fi
This section covers connecting your thermostat to Wi-Fi. If you chose "No, it needs to be installed," the app provided instructions for wiring first. If your Sensi thermostat was professionally installed or you have already installed and wired it but not yet connected to Wi-Fi, choose "Yes, it is on the wall." The app will then proceed directly to Wi-Fi connection.
BROADCAST SENSI NETWORK
On the thermostat, press Menu, then press Mode. The Wi-Fi icon in the upper left-hand corner will flash, and a version indicator (00, 11, or 22) will be displayed in the middle of the thermostat.

CONNECT YOUR SENSI THERMOSTAT TO YOUR WI-FI NETWORK WITH THE SENSI APP
Follow the step-by-step instructions within the Sensi app. The Wi-Fi connection process may vary slightly based on your device's operating system (iOS/Android), Sensi app version, and your Sensi thermostat version. For iPhone/iPad users, if you see "11" or "22" displayed, you may have the option to connect with Apple HomeKit.
After connecting to the Sensi network, you will enter the Sensi password (found on the Welcome Guide or thermostat back as "Sensi Security Code"). Then, you will connect to your Wi-Fi network.
Name Thermostat
You can select a suggested name or create a custom name for your Sensi Thermostat. Press "Next" to continue.

Register Thermostat
After successfully connecting, the app will prompt you to register the thermostat. You can choose the "Locate Me" option or manually enter your street address, city, state, zip code, country, and time zone. Press "Next" to continue.

Contractor Information
If a contractor professionally installed your thermostat and is a registered Sensi partner, they may have the option to input their phone number here. If no registered number is available, simply press "Next" to continue.
Start Using Sensi
Congratulations on successfully installing Sensi! Press "Start Using Sensi Thermostat" to open the main screen of the app.

Troubleshooting
Connecting to Wi-Fi Troubleshooting
If you are experiencing issues connecting to Wi-Fi, try these tips:
- Ensure the Sensi app is up-to-date and running the latest version.
- Reboot your smartphone.
- Reboot your router by unplugging it from the wall for a few minutes, then plugging it back in.
- After the router reboots and your Wi-Fi network has internet access, ensure your phone is connected to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network.
- For iPhone users: Ensure Keychain is On and Home Data is allowed for the Sensi app.
- For Android users: Go to your phone's Advanced Wi-Fi Settings and turn off the "Switch to mobile data" feature (this may also be called "Smart Network Switch" or "Avoid poor connections").
- For easier setup, consider turning "Mobile Data" off completely in your Connection settings.
- Try using another smartphone or tablet. Download the Sensi app and sign in with your existing account credentials.
Reconnecting to Wi-Fi
If you replace your router or change your Wi-Fi network password, you will need to reconnect your thermostat to Wi-Fi. The process may differ depending on your smart device. For more information, please see our support article: sensi.emerson.com/en-us/support/reconnecting-sensi-thermostat-to-wifi.
Notes
HVAC Configuration Menu
If you chose "No, it needs to be installed" and followed the app's installation process, your thermostat should be configured correctly for your system type. If you encounter an issue or wish to check your system configurations, you can manually configure your thermostat. Accessing your Sensi thermostat from other devices
When you log into your Sensi account with your email address and password, the app can control all thermostats registered to your account. If you share your account credentials, others can log in and control any thermostats linked to that account. You can change your email address and password within the app. Be mindful of who you share your information with, as there is no limit to the number of devices that can access the thermostat.
Forgot password
If you forget your Sensi account password, click "Forgot Password" on the app's login screen. A temporary password will be sent to the email address you use to log in.

Installing multiple thermostats
If you are installing more than one thermostat, follow the same installation process in the Sensi app. Once one thermostat is installed, open the Sensi app on your phone and tap the '+' sign on the main screen to add another thermostat to your account.
Accessing account information
You can use the Account area to access your email preferences, change your account information, and update the email address associated with your Sensi account.
- For iOS: Tap the person icon in the upper right-hand corner.
- For Android: Tap the three dots in the upper right-hand corner.
