Ths manual has all the feature operatons and troubleshootng necessary to nstall and operate your new VTech product. Important safety instructions When usng your equpment, basc safety precautons should always be followed to reduce the rsk of fire, electrc shock and njury, ncludng the followng: 1. Follow all warnngs and nstructons marked on the product. 2. Adult setup s requred. 3. Ths product s ntended as an ad. It s not a substtute for responsble and proper adult supervson and should not be used as such. 4. Ths product s not ntended for use as a medcal montor. 5. Do not use ths product near water. For example, do not use t next to a bath tub, wash bowl, ktchen snk, laundry tub or swmmng pool, or n a wet basement or shower. 6. CAUTION: Use Only Suppled Battery. Do not dspose of batteres n a fire. They may explode. 7. Use only the adapters ncluded wth ths product. Incorrect adapter polarty or voltage can serously damage the product. The power adapters are ntended to be correctly orented n a vertcal or floor mount poston. The prongs are not desgned to hold the plug n place f t s plugged nto a celng, under-the-table or cabnet outlet. 9. Unplug ths product from the wall outlet before cleanng. Do not use lqud or aerosol cleaners. Use a damp cloth for cleanng. 10. Unplug the power cords before replacng the battery pack. 11. Do not cut off the adapters to replace them wth other plugs, as ths causes a hazardous stuaton. 12. Do not allow anythng to rest on the power cords. Do not nstall ths product where the cords may be walked on or crmped. 13. Ths product should be operated only from the type of power source ndcated on the markng label. If you are not sure of the type of power supply n your home, consult your dealer or local power company. Important safety instructions (continued) 14. Do not overload wall outlets or use an extenson cord. 15. Do not place ths product on an unstable table, shelf, stand or other unstable surfaces. 16. Ths product should not be placed n any area where proper ventlaton s not provded. Slots and openngs n the back or bottom of ths product are provded for ventlaton. To protect them from overheatng, these openngs must not be blocked by placng the product on a soft surface such as a bed, sofa or rug. Ths product should never be placed near or over a radator or heat regster. 17. Never push objects of any knd nto ths product through the slots because they may touch dangerous voltage ponts or create a short crcut. Never spll lqud of any knd on the product. 18. To reduce the rsk of electrc shock, do not dsassemble ths product, but take t to an authorzed servce faclty. Openng or removng parts of the product other than specfied access doors may expose you to dangerous voltages or other rsks. Incorrect reassemblng can cause electrc shock when the product s subsequently used. 19. You should test the sound recepton every tme you turn on the unts or move one of the components. 20. Perodcally examne all components for damage. 21. Be aware of possble loss of prvacy whle usng publc arwaves. Conversatons may be pcked up by other nursery montors, cordless phones, scanners, etc. 22. Chldren should be supervsed to ensure that they do not play wth the product. 23. The product s not ntended for use by persons (ncludng chldren) wth reduced physcal, sensory or mental capabltes, or lack of experence and knowledge, unless they have been gven supervson or nstructon concernng use of the applance by a person responsble for ther safety. Other electronc products such as HAM rados and DECT cordless phones may cause nterference wth your audo montor. Install the baby unt as shown below. Make sure that the power outlet s not controlled by a wall swtch. Bundle the power adapter cord neatly wth a twst te. The baby unt turns on when t s powered up. Power adapter The POWER lght remans on when the baby unt s turned on. Baby unt · Use only the baby unt power adapter suppled wth ths product. To order a replacement, contact VTech on 1 300 369 193. · The adapters are ntended to be correctly orented n a vertcal or floor mount poston. The prongs are not desgned to hold the plug n place f t s plugged nto a celng, underthe-table or cabnet outlet. · Make sure the unt and the power adapter cord are out of reach of chldren. 2 Getting started Parent unit battery installation You can power up the parent unt by connectng t to AC power or to the rechargeable battery pack provded. Even f the parent unt s connected to AC power, we recommend you also nstall the battery pack. Ths guarantees contnued operaton n case of a power outage. Install the battery as shown below. 1. Insert the battery nto the battery compartment wth the wres hangng out. 2. Plug the battery connector securely nto the socket nsde the battery compartment. The parent unt turns on when t s powered up. Place the wres neatly nsde the battery compartment. 3 Getting started Parent unit battery installation (continued) 3. Algn the cover flat aganst the battery compartment, then slde t towards the center of the parent unt untl t clcks nto place. · If the parent unt wll not be used for a long tme, dsconnect and remove the battery pack to prevent possble leakage. · Use only the battery pack suppled wth ths product. To order a replacement, contact VTech on 1 300 369 193. 4 Getting started Parent unit installation Install the parent unt as shown below. Make sure that the power outlet s not controlled by a wall swtch. Bundle the power adapter cord neatly wth a twst te. When the battery pack s nstalled, the LOW BATTERY lght turns red when the unt s connected to charger. The LOW BATTERY lght remans red when the unt s connected to charger. The followng table summarzes the LOW BATTERY lght behavour and actons to take. Battery indicators Battery status Action LOW BATTERY lght s off. No battery s nstalled when t s connected to AC power; or the battery s nstalled wthout chargng by AC power. Make sure the parent unt battery s nstalled and connected to AC power. LOW BATTERY lght flashes red. The battery has very lttle charge and may be used for only a short tme. Charge the battery wthout nterrupton, and keep t connected to AC power. LOW BATTERY lght remans red steadly. The battery s chargng. To keep the battery charged and connected to AC power when not n use. When you charge the battery pack ntally or t s not used for a long perod of tme, charge t for 11 hours contnuously. It takes longer to charge the battery when the parent unt s turned on. To shorten the chargng tme, turn the parent unt off. 6 Getting started Baby unit overview Nightlight Amber when (nghtlght) turns on. (Nightlight) Press to turn the nghtlght on or off. POWER light Green when the baby unt turns on. (On/off) Press and hold to turn on or off. Microphone Power jack 7 Getting started Parent unit overview Sound level indicators Lght up when there are sounds detected from the baby unt. The number of ndcators that lght up depends on the loudness of the sound. Lght up whle adjustng the speaker volume. The number of ndcators that lght up ndcates the current volume level settng. /VOLUME/ Press to decrease or ncrease the speaker volume. (On/off) Press and hold to turn on or off . Power jack 8 LINK light Green when the baby unt turns on. Flashes green when the parent unt s not lnked to the baby unt. LOW BATTERY light Red when the battery s chargng. Flashes red when the battery s low and needs chargng. Off when no battery s nstalled and the parent unt s connected to AC power; or when the battery s nstalled wthout chargng by AC power. Speaker To lsten to sounds transmtted from the baby unt. Belt clip Battery compartment cover Getting started Positioning and operating range Positioning the audio monitor Place the parent unt wthn the operatng range (see below) of the baby unt. We recommend you place the parent unt at least 1 metre away from the baby unt to avod audo feedback. If you stll experence audo feedback, move the parent unt and the baby unt farther apart. At least 1 metre Audio settings You may need to turn the speaker volume on the parent unt louder to hear the sounds transmtted from the baby unt (see page 12). Operating range The operatng range of the audo montor s up to 300 metres outdoors or 50 metres ndoors. The actual operatng range may vary dependng on the envronmental condtons and other nterferences such as walls, doors and other obstructons. It s the caregver's responsblty to stay close enough to take care of any eventualty. 9 Getting started Test your audio monitor before use It s mportant to test the audo montor when t s nstalled ntally, and at regular tmes thereafter. Test your parent unt and baby unt f they have not been used for a long tme or you suspect they are defectve. To test your audio monitor: 1. Place the parent unt and the baby unt n the same room to test the product. Make sure the baby unt s at least 1 metre away from the parent unt. 2. Install the baby unt and the parent unt as descrbed on pages 2 to 5. Both unts should turn on when they are powered up. 3. When the parent unt s lnked to the baby unt, the LINK lght turns green steadly. If the parent unt s not lnked to the baby unt, the parent unt LINK lght wll flash green. 10 Baby unit operation Power on or off the baby unit · Press and hold for 2 seconds to turn on the baby unt. The POWER lght turns green. · Press and hold for 2 seconds agan to turn off the baby unt. The POWER lght turns off. Nightlight on the baby unit When you have turned on the nghtlght on the baby unt, t wll turn off automatcally when no sound s detected wthn 15 mnutes. To turn on the nightlight: · Press on the baby unt. The Nightlight turns amber. To turn off the nightlight: · Press agan on the baby unt. The Nightlight turns off. 11 Parent unit operation Power on or off the parent unit · Press and hold for 2 seconds to turn on the parent unt. The LINK lght turns green. · Press and hold for 2 seconds agan to turn off the parent unt. The LINK lght turns off. If the parent unt s not lnked to the baby unt, the parent unt LINK lght wll flash green. Speaker volume You can change the speaker volume (lstenng volume) from (Level 1) to (Level 5), or turn t off to (Volume off) The speaker volume s preset to (Level 3). To adjust the speaker volume: · Press /VOLUME or VOLUME/ when the parent unt s not n use. 12 Appendix Parent unit battery It takes up to 11 hours for the battery pack to be fully charged. The battery needs chargng when: · A new battery pack s nstalled n the parent unt. · The parent unt beeps four tmes every mnute. · The battery pack s properly nstalled. · LOW BATTERY lght flashes on the parent unt. CAUTION: · Use Only Suppled Battery. · Do not dspose of the battery pack n a fire. Check wth local waste management codes for specal dsposal nstructons. · Do not open or mutlate the battery pack. Released electrolyte s corrosve and may cause burns or njury to the eyes or skn. The electrolyte may be toxc f swallowed. · Exercse care n handlng the battery pack n order not to create a short crcut wth conductve materals. · Charge the battery pack provded wth or dentfied for use wth ths product only n accordance wth the nstructons and lmtatons specfied n ths manual. · Observe proper polarty orentaton between the battery and metallc contacts. · To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not expose ths product to water or any type of mosture. 13 Appendix Troubleshooting If you have dfficulty wth ths product, please try the suggestons below. For customer servce, contact VTech on 1 300 369 193. My audio monitor does not work at all. · Make sure the baby unt and the parent unt are nstalled correctly (pages 2 to 5). · Make sure the parent unt battery pack s nstalled (pages 3 and 4) and charged correctly (page 6). For optmum daly performance, charge the parent unt when t s not s use. · Make sure the power adapters are securely plugged nto the outlet not controlled by a wall swtch. · Make sure the power adapter cords are plugged firmly nto the baby unt and parent unt. · Make sure the baby unt and the parent unt are turned on. · The parent unt may be too far away from the baby unt. Move the parent unt closer to the baby unt (but not less than 1 metre). · Unplug the electrcal power to the baby unt and parent unt. Wat for approxmately 15 seconds, then plug t back n. Turn on the baby unt and the parent unt. Allow up to one mnute for the baby unt and the parent unt to synchronze. · Charge the battery n the parent unt for up to 11 hours. · If the battery s completely depleted, t may take up to 30 mnutes to charge the parent unt before t can be used for a very short tme (page 6). · Completely remove and nstall the battery agan. If that stll does not work, t may be necessary to purchase a new battery. · Large obstructons may mpact the recepton. Try to relocate the baby unt, away from large obstructons such as walls and doors. · Other electronc products such as HAM rados and DECT cordless phones can cause nterference wth your audo montor. Try nstallng your audo montor as far away as possble from these types of electronc devces. The audio monitor produces high-pitched noise. · The parent unt may be too close to the baby unt or another parent unt. Make sure the parent unt and the baby unt are at least 1 metre away from one another. 14 Appendix Troubleshooting (continued) My parent unit plays any sounds from the baby unit and I think it is too noisy. · You may need to adjust the speaker volume on the parent unt (page 12). My parent unit does not play any sound when there is noise from the baby unit. · Make sure the parent unt s powered up by connectng t to AC power (page 5) or to the rechargeable battery pack provded (page 3). · Make sure the power adapter and the parent unt are plugged n correctly and securely (page 5). · Make sure the parent unt s turned on (page 12) and the speaker volume s not set to (Volume off) (page 12). · The parent unt may be too far away from the baby unt. Move the parent unt closer to the baby unt (but not less than 1 metre). · If the parent unt s powered by the provded battery pack, make sure there s sufficent charge. Charge the battery n the parent unt for up to 11 hours. · Other electronc products such as HAM rados and DECT cordless phones can cause nterference wth your audo montor. Try nstallng your audo montor as far away as possble from these types of electronc devces. · Large obstructons may mpact the recepton. Try to relocate the baby unt, away from large obstructons such as walls and doors. · Completely remove and nstall the battery agan. Turn on the baby unt and the parent unt. Allow up to one mnute for the parent unt and the baby unt to synchronze. The LOW BATTERY light flashes on the parent unit. · Charge the battery n the parent unt for up to 11 hours. · Completely remove and nstall the battery agan and use t untl fully depleted, then recharge the battery n the parent unt for up to 11 hours. · If the above measures do not correct the problem, replace the battery. 15 Appendix Troubleshooting (continued) The battery does not charge in the parent unit or the parent unit battery does not accept charge. · Make sure the battery s nstalled n the parent unt battery compartment correctly. The LINK lght on the parent unt should be on. · Completely remove and nstall the battery agan, then charge for up to 11 hours. · If LINK lght on the parent unt s not on, refer to The LINK light on the parent unit is off below. · If the battery s completely depleted, t may take up to 30 mnutes to charge the parent unt before t can be used for a very short tme (page 6). · Purchase a new battery. Refer to Parent unit battery installation (page 3) and Parent unit battery charging (page 6). The LINK light on the parent unit is off. · Make sure the parent unt battery s nstalled (page 3) and charged (page 6) correctly. · Make sure the power adapter and the parent unt are plugged n correctly and securely. · Unplug the parent unt power adapter. Wat for 15 seconds before pluggng t back n. Allow up to one mnute for the baby unt and parent unt to reset. The parent unit beeps and is not performing normally. · Make sure the baby unt s turned on. · Move the parent unt closer to the baby unt (but not less than 1 metre). The parent unt may be out of range. · If the parent unt s powered by the provded battery pack, t may not have enough charge for the parent unt to perform normally. Charge the battery n the parent unt for up to 11 hours. · Reset the parent unt and the baby unt by turnng them off and unpluggng the electrcal power to the parent unt and the baby unt. Wat for 15 seconds and plug them back n agan. Turn on the parent unt and the baby unt. Allow up to one mnute for the parent unt and the baby unt to synchronze. 16 Appendix Troubleshooting (continued) · Other electronc products such as HAM rados and DECT cordless phones can cause nterference wth your audo montor. Try nstallng your audo montor as far away as possble from these types of electronc devces. The link between the baby unit and the parent unit is lost every now and then, and I'm experiencing sound interruptions. · Move the parent unt closer to the baby unt (but not less than 1 metre). The parent unt may be out of range. · Reset the baby unt by unpluggng the electrcal power to the baby unt. Wat for 15 seconds and plug t back n agan. Turn on the baby unt and the parent unt. Allow up to one mnute for the parent unt and the baby unt to synchronze. Common cure for electronic equipment. · If the audo montor s not respondng normally, try the followng (n the order lsted): 1. Dsconnect the power to the baby unt and the parent unt. 2. Remove the battery packs n the parent unt and then nstall agan. 3. Wat a few mnutes before connectng power back to the baby unt and the parent unt. 4. The baby unt and the parent unt should turn on when they are powered up. 5. Wat for the parent unt to synchronze wth the baby unt. Allow up to one mnute for ths to take place. 17 Appendix Operating range The baby unt and the parent unt can communcate over only a certan dstance - whch can vary wth the locatons of the baby unt, the parent unt, the weather, and the layout of your home. When the parent unt s out of range, the parent unt beeps and the LINK lght flashes. To mprove recepton, move closer to the baby unt (but not less than 1 metre). Maintenance Taking care of your audio monitor Your audo montor contans sophstcated electronc parts, so t must be treated wth care. Avoid rough treatment Place the baby unt and parent unt down gently. Save the orgnal packng materals to protect your audo montor f you ever need to shp t. Avoid water Your audo montor can be damaged f t gets wet. Do not use the parent unt and/or baby unt outdoors n the ran, or handle t wth wet hands. Do not nstall the audo montor near a snk, bathtub or shower. Electrical storms Electrcal storms can sometmes cause power surges harmful to electronc equpment. For your own safety, take cauton when usng electrcal applances durng storms. Cleaning your audio monitor Your audo montor has a durable plastc casng that should retan ts luster for many years. Clean t only wth a soft cloth slghtly dampened wth water or mld soap. Do not use excess water or cleanng solvents of any knd. Remember that electrcal applances can cause serous njury f used when you are wet or standng n water. If the baby unt and/or parent unt should fall nto water, DO NOT RETRIEVE IT UNTIL YOU UNPLUG THE POWER CORDS FROM THE WALL.
