Netvox ZB11A Motion Detector User Manual
Introduction
The Netvox ZB11A is an infrared radiation (IR) occupancy sensor that functions as an End Device within a ZigBee network. It does not perform permit-join functions like a coordinator or router. When the ZB11A detects movement, it reports the event to the ZigBee network, enabling users to assign specific tasks to other devices based on these reports. The ZB11A also serves as a sensor (Zone device) in ZigBee security systems, notifying a central security unit (CIE), also known as a Control and Indicating Equipment device, to send commands to a siren device to trigger an alarm.
What is ZigBee?
ZigBee is a short-range wireless transmission technology based on the IEEE802.15.4 standard. It supports various network topologies, including point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, and mesh networks. ZigBee is designed as a general-purpose, cost-effective, low-power-consumption, low-data-rate, and easy-to-install wireless solution suitable for applications such as industrial control, embedded sensing, medical data collection, smoke and intruder warning, building automation, and home automation.
Product Appearance
The Netvox ZB11A Motion Detector features the following components:
- Indicator (Red/Green)
- Binding Key
- Infrared Sensor
- Auxiliary Key
- Sensor Sensitivity Adjuster
- Release Button
Installation Placement Guidelines
The following diagrams illustrate recommended and non-recommended installation placements:
- Recommended: Place at 2-2.2 meters from the ground.
- Avoid: Place away from heat or cold sources, air conditioners, refrigerators, and stoves.
- Avoid: Ensure no glass, curtains, or other obstructions are between the sensor and IR events.
- Avoid: Do not point the sensor towards direct sunlight.
- Avoid: Mount on a vibration-free surface.
Sensitivity Adjustment
The sensor's detecting sensitivity can be adjusted using the Sensor Sensitivity Adjuster. Clockwise adjustment increases sensitivity. The default setting is indicated in the diagram.
Projected Area Diagrams
The diagrams illustrate the sensor's detection coverage:
- Horizontal Projected Area: Shows detection zones A (11m, 30°), B (8m, 60°), and C (5m, 120°).
- Space Projected Area: Depicts the conical detection field, indicating varying sensitivity based on the direction of movement relative to the sensor. Movement perpendicular to the sensor's face is most sensitive, while movement along the sensor's axis is less sensitive.
Double-sided Stickers Installation
To install using double-sided stickers:
- Clean both surfaces to be stuck together.
- Peel one side of the sticker and apply it to the product base, pressing smoothly.
- Peel the remaining side and stick it to the clean wall surface, ensuring the arrow direction points upwards. Press firmly for approximately 20 seconds.

Setting up ZB11A
5-1. Turn On/Turn Off ZB11A
After powering on, ZB11A enters turn-off mode. To manually turn on, press the Binding Key once; indicators will flash once. If it's the first use or after resetting, ZB11A will attempt to join the network. To turn off manually, press and hold the Binding Key for 15 seconds; the indicator will show a slow green flash. A 10-second interval between turning on and off is recommended to avoid issues with inductors and capacitors.
5-2. Join the ZigBee Network
Once turned on, ZB11A searches for an existing ZigBee network and automatically requests to join. It can join if it is within range of a coordinator or router with the permit-join feature enabled.
- Enable the permit-join function (valid for 60 seconds) on a coordinator or router.
- Turn on ZB11A; it will search and join the network.
- The indicator flashes green once when a network is found.
- The indicator flashes green 5 times upon successful joining. No flash indicates failure.
5-3. Enroll in the ZigBee Security System
ZB11A acts as a Zone device in the ZigBee security system. After joining the network, it finds a CIE (Control and Indicating Equipment) device (e.g., Netvox Z201B) and sends a registration request for enrollment.
- No CIE device or incompatible CIE device: Indicator flashes green twice.
- Compatible CIE device, but enrollment fails: Indicator flashes green 4 times.
- Enrollment completed: Indicator flashes green 6 times.
NOTE: To prevent registration failure, avoid enrolling multiple Zone devices simultaneously.
5-4. Sleeping Mode
ZB11A enters sleeping mode for power saving in several scenarios:
- In the network: Sleeps for 5 minutes, wakes up every 5 minutes to stay online.
- Not joined to a network: Sleeps and wakes up every 15 minutes to search for a network.
- Network lost/device out of network: Wakes up every 15 minutes to find the previously joined network.
The device does not remain in sleep mode permanently; it checks for a network every 15 minutes. This can consume up to 30 times more power than normal operation. To prevent this, users are advised to remove batteries to power off the device.
5-5. Wake Up ZB11A
To manually wake up ZB11A, press the Auxiliary Key once.
- When in a ZigBee network, it sends device data (IEEE/Network address), and the indicator flashes green 5 times.
- If offline in a ZigBee network, it attempts to rejoin the network.
ZB11A remains activated for 2 minutes after waking up.
5-6. Battery
ZB11A reports low power (below 3.2V by default) to the ZigBee network. Related data includes Power configuration cluster (ID:0x0001) and Battery voltage attribute (ID:0x0020). The reporting voltage can be adjusted to 3.5V, 3.4V, 3.3V, or 3.2V. A minimal reporting interval longer than 5 minutes is recommended.
5-7. Infrared Sensor Detection and Report
When the infrared sensor detects movement, ZB11A reports to the CIE device and enters an Occupied status, indicated by a red flash once. In the Occupied condition, it detects further movement every 84 seconds (default 70% of 120s). If no additional movement is detected within 120 seconds, it goes to Unoccupied status and reports to the ZigBee network.
- After joining the ZigBee network, the infrared sensor is inactive for 1 minute.
- If not in a ZigBee network, ZB11A attempts to join after detecting movement.
- Users can adjust detection sensitivity via the Sensor Sensitivity Adjuster (clockwise increases sensitivity).
5-8. Tamper Alarm
ZB11A features a tamper alarm. If the cover is opened, it notifies the central security unit (CIE) to send a command to a Warning Device.
5-9. Restore to Factory Setting
To restore factory settings:
- Press and hold the Auxiliary Key for 10 seconds.
- Release the button when the indicator shows fast green flashes to complete the restore.
