Key Features
Dynamic VLAN Assignment
IP phones and PCs can authenticate on the same port but under different VLAN assignment policies. Users can move freely and enjoy the same network access level regardless of their physical location.
Static Routing
Provides a simple way to segment the network with internal routing through the switch, reserving the router for external traffic routing only, thus making the entire network more efficient.
Comprehensive IPv6 Support for Management, ACL and QoS
Builds current networks with future needs in mind, ensuring investment protection and a smooth migration to IPv6-based networks without requiring switch replacement.
IGMP Snooping and MLD Snooping
Facilitates fast receiver joins and leaves for multicast streams, saving costs and improving network efficiency by ensuring multicast traffic only reaches designated receivers without the need for an extra multicast router.
Robust Security Features
- 802.1x authentication
- DHCP Snooping
- Port-based security by locked MAC
- ACL filtering to permit or deny traffic based on MAC and IP addresses
Auto Voice and Auto Video
Automatic Voice over IP prioritization with Auto-VoIP simplifies complex multi-vendor IP telephone deployments, whether based on protocols (SIP, H323, SCCP) or on OUI bytes (default database and user-based OUIs) in the phone's source MAC address. This provides the best class of service to VoIP streams (data and signaling) over other traffic by classifying traffic and enabling correct egress queue configuration. When deployed IP phones are LLDP-MED compliant, the Voice VLAN uses LLDP-MED to pass VLAN ID, 802.1P priority, and DSCP values to the IP phones, accelerating convergent deployments.
Comprehensive QoS Features
- Port-based or 802.1p-based prioritization
- Layer 3-based (DSCP) prioritization
- Port-based egress rate limiting
DHCP Snooping
Ensures IP address allocation integrity by allowing only clients with specific IP/MAC addresses to access the network.
Dual Firmware Images and Configuration Files
Provides dual firmware image and dual configuration file for transparent firmware updates/configuration changes with minimum service interruption.
Protected Ports
Ensures no exchange of unicast, broadcast, or multicast traffic between protected ports on the switch, improving the security of converged networks. Sensitive conversations remain private, and surveillance video clips are forwarded to designated storage devices without leakage or alteration.
Dynamic ARP Inspection
Prevents man-in-the-middle attacks where an unfriendly station intercepts traffic by poisoning ARP caches of unsuspecting neighbors.
Multicast VLAN Registration
Eliminates multicast traffic replication for every VLAN by sending multicast traffic only to the dedicated multicast/source VLAN, resulting in more efficient network bandwidth utilization.
Example Application
Converged Network Application
The diagram illustrates a typical converged network application. It shows an internet connection leading to the NETGEAR GS724T switch. The switch is depicted with 24 RJ45 ports and 2 SFP ports. Devices connected to the switch include multiple laptops, a server rack labeled 'File Servers', and wireless devices (represented by Wi-Fi symbols). The connections show data flow between the internet, the switch, and the end devices, highlighting the switch's role in connecting various network components.
