Charging Your Goal Zero Yeti
The Goal Zero Yeti 1000 Lithium can be charged via solar, wall outlet, or a 12V source.
Charging from Solar
There are three input ports for solar charging: two 8mm ports (front and inside the storage compartment) and one Anderson Power Pole port. Each 8mm port supports up to 160W, and the Anderson Power Pole port supports up to 240W. The total solar input capacity is 240W.
Important Note: When solar recharging, do not exceed 30V. Individual panels or panels chained in series exceeding 30V can cause serious damage.
Steps:
- Place solar panels in direct sunlight.
- Connect the solar panel plug to an INPUT port (front or storage compartment). A blue LED next to the INPUT port indicates charging. Battery segments on the LCD will blink. Solid segments indicate a full charge.
- Alternatively, use the Anderson Power Pole port with the appropriate adapter.
- Multiple Goal Zero Solar Panels can be chained for faster recharge times (up to 240W combined).
- You can charge from solar and a wall charger simultaneously.
Charging from the Wall
Use the included AC Wall Charger. Plug the Goal Zero Yeti into any wall outlet. The blue LED next to the INPUT port will illuminate, and battery segments will blink, indicating charging. Fully charged when segments are solid. Recharge time from the wall is approximately 18 hours.
The AC wall adapter may come in two pieces; connect them by plugging the cable into the box. The AC cable can be stored in the compartment or connected to the front panel input port.
Charging from your Car
Charging from a 12V source, like a car, is not recommended. If necessary, purchase an 8.0 mm to 12V charger from GOALZERO.com. Due to differences in battery chemistries (Lead Acid vs. Lithium Ion), charge rates and completeness may be inconsistent.
Using Your Goal Zero Yeti
How to use your Goal Zero Yeti
- Press the power button above each port you intend to use. Turn off unused ports to conserve power.
- A green LED light on the power button indicates the port is active.
- Plug in your devices to power them.
- If possible, keep the Goal Zero Yeti plugged into a power source when not in use.
- You can charge the Goal Zero Yeti and run your gear simultaneously.
Best-Use Strategy
Monitor the LCD Battery Display. Devices with high power requirements may drain the battery quickly. Be aware that energy conversion (DC to AC for the inverter) results in some efficiency loss, meaning you may not get the full rated capacity. Check device power requirements if experiencing shorter runtimes.
Cold Weather Usage
Cold temperatures can impact battery capacity. For sub-zero conditions, keep the Goal Zero Yeti in an insulated cooler connected to a power source (like solar panels) to maintain optimal battery performance.
Storage and Downtime Maintenance
Keeping your Goal Zero Yeti connected to a power source, like a solar panel or wall plug, during periods of inactivity helps maintain battery health. If the Yeti cannot be kept plugged in, fully charge it every 3 months and store it in a cool, dry place. Failure to maintain the battery can result in damage and void the product warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions
What type of battery is in my Goal Zero Yeti?
Your Goal Zero Yeti uses custom designed Lithium Ion batteries. These batteries store and release energy efficiently and are housed in a protective enclosure with a sophisticated battery management and protection system. It is critical to keep the battery dry, as moisture can bypass protection circuitry.
Can I replace the battery in my Goal Zero Yeti?
Yes, the battery is designed for easy replacement. The process involves:
- Turning the Yeti upside-down on a soft surface.
- Removing 10 screws from the bottom plate.
- Unscrewing 2 bolts connecting to the battery terminals.
- Disconnecting the data connector to the battery.
- Removing 8 screws holding the battery pack.
- Lifting out the old battery (note: it is heavy).
- Inserting the replacement battery and reassembling in reverse order.
Replaceable batteries are available from GoalZero.com. Contact Goal Zero at 888-794-6250 for assistance.
How do I know if my Goal Zero Yeti is charged?
Check the LCD Battery Display. It shows the charge level with 5 segments. It is acceptable to use the Yeti even when not fully charged.
How do I know if my device will work with the Goal Zero Yeti?
First, determine your device's power requirement (Watts). Then, check the Goal Zero Yeti's output port capacities (e.g., 1500W for the AC port) and surge ratings. For example, a 100W light would run for approximately 10 hours from a 1000Wh Yeti (1000Wh / 100W = 10 hours). Consider energy conversion losses, especially with the AC inverter. Research your device's watt consumption for best results.
Troubleshooting
If your devices are not recharging from your Goal Zero Yeti, follow these steps:
- Ensure the Output Port is turned on (green LED lit). If a light is red, it indicates a trip; press the button again to reset.
- Check the Battery Display. If it is at 20% or below, charge your Goal Zero Yeti.
- Check the LCD Display for warning icons:
- OVERLOAD: Power draw exceeds port's maximum allowance (indicated by red light in the port's button).
- BATT SAFE MODE: Activates when battery voltage drops too low for the cigarette lighter port (>10.5V). Other ports remain active to protect standard 12V devices.
- Verify your device is suitable for use with the Goal Zero Yeti by checking its power requirements against the Yeti's output port capacities and surge ratings.
For temperature warnings, allow the unit to cool. If the battery requires attention, contact customer support at 1-888-794-6250.

Education
BATTERIES 101
Goal Zero utilizes advanced battery technology. For optimal performance:
- Battery Exercise: Use your batteries regularly. Avoid leaving them uncharged for extended periods. Fully charge before storage.
- Battery Memory Myth: Unlike older NiCd batteries, modern Lithium Ion batteries do not require “deep cycling” (complete draining) and it can be harmful.
- The “Stadium Effect”: Battery charging may slow down as it approaches full capacity, similar to how a stadium fills up with fewer available seats.
- Read the Manual: Always refer to your device's manual for specific care instructions.
SOLAR 101
Goal Zero simplifies solar charging. Key points:
- Solar Panels Collect, Not Store: Panels collect solar energy to store in a recharger. Follow the COLLECT – STORE – USE principle.
- Charge Time Calculation: While manufacturers may use formulas like (Device Wh / Solar Panel Watts), real-world results on a sunny day are typically 50-75% of rated wattage due to various factors.
- Overcast Conditions: Solar panels still collect power via IR and UV rays, though efficiency decreases.
- Placement: Keep panels in direct sunlight, away from shade and windows, for maximum efficiency. Proper alignment towards the sun also increases solar efficiency.
