INTRODUCTION
On sale since late 2021, the Ioniq 5 is Hyundai's first model based on their new E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform). Initially released with a 72.6kWh battery offering rear-wheel or all-wheel drive options. This fact sheet covers the mid-2024 update model.
Updates:
Late 2022:
- Battery size increased to 77.4 kWh; Epiq version added.
- Service intervals increased to 24 months/30,000 km.
September 2023:
- Addition of 58 kWh, RWD 'Standard Range' option.
- Model option names changed to Ioniq 5, Dynamic, and Epiq with associated trim and option revisions.
- Addition of N performance model with 84 kWh battery.
Mid-2024:
- Battery size increases: LR for non-N model to 84kWh, SR to 63kWh.
- Minor exterior styling changes, including a rear spoiler and rear window wiper; bumper change adds 20 mm in length.
- Centre console changed, more function control buttons.
- Body stiffened, suspension tweaked, more sound deadening.
- N-Line variant added.
DRIVING RANGE
The official Australian ADR 81/02 test cycle is based on the outdated European NEDC test cycle. Manufacturers generally quote the more achievable ranges found using the newer European WLTP test cycle. For assessment, NEDC is generally 30% too high, WLTP is a good estimate for mostly urban driving, and US EPA is better for mostly outer suburban to regional driving.
Variant | NEDC (Aust) | WLTP (Euro) | EPA (USA) |
---|---|---|---|
Ioniq 5 (SR) | Not rated | 440 | 392 |
Ioniq 5 (LR) | Not rated | 570 | 512 |
Dynamiq (2WD) | Not rated | 530 | 512 |
Dynamiq (AWD) | Not rated | 500 | 467 |
Epiq (2WD) | Not rated | 530 | 512 |
Epiq (AWD) | Not rated | 500 | 467 |
N Line | Not rated | 495 | TBC |
Ioniq 5 N (84 kWh) | Not rated | 448 | 356 |
Using the US EPA range, a 2WD, 84kWh base model Ioniq 5 could complete a return trip from Melbourne to Halls Gap, Victoria, with minimal heating or air conditioning use. A short DC top-up charge in Ballarat Central or Warrenheip would be recommended. For further charging options and locations, visit: https://www.plugshare.com/

CHARGING SPEEDS/REQUIREMENTS
Charging port
The Ioniq 5 is fitted with a CCS2 socket, allowing charging via Type 2 AC chargers as well as CCS2 DC fast-chargers.
Image: CCS2 charging plug and socket shows the CCS2 charging port on the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the corresponding charging plug.
Notes:
- The Ioniq 5 can be charged at any AC EVSE, but an adaptor is needed for older Type 1 (J1772) plugs. Charging is limited to 7.4 kW on a Type 1 plug EVSE.
CHARGING SPEEDS/REQUIREMENTS (CONTINUED)
AC charging:
The Ioniq 5 features a Type 2 AC socket. Charging rates are 7.4kW maximum for single-phase (32A) and 11kW maximum for three-phase (16A per phase).
Charging speeds and times depend on the EVSE capacity and chosen battery size. Table 2 shows approximate charging times for the Ioniq 5 with 63 kWh (Standard Range) and 84 kWh (Extended Range) battery packs.
AC: 0-100% time | DC: 0-80% time | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
10 A (power point) | 15 A (1 phase EVSE) | 32 A (Caravan outlet) | 16 or 32 A (3 phase public AC EVSE) | DC Fast charge (50kW) | DC Fast charge (250+kW) | |
63kWh | 25h | 17h | 8.5h | 5.6h | 66m | 20m |
84kWh | 35h | 23.3h | 11.6h | 7.8h | 87h | 20m |
DC fast charging:
The Ioniq 5 uses the CCS2 DC fast-charge connector and can charge at up to 175 kW for the 63 kWh battery and 233 kW for the 84 kWh battery.
V2X capability:
The Ioniq 5 offers Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality via a plug-in adaptor for the AC charge socket or an interior 3-pin socket. V2X is a generic term covering options for supplying 230V AC power from the battery, including: V2L (vehicle to load), V2H (vehicle to home), and V2G (vehicle to grid).
HOME CHARGING CONSIDERATIONS
For the shortest home charging time, an 11kW AC charger is recommended. However, lower-rated EVSEs may be more practical depending on existing power supply and needs, though they will increase charging times.
Important notes for any home EVSE installation:
- High charging rates are generally not needed for overnight charging.
- Homes typically do not have three-phase AC connected.
- Switchboard and/or electrical supply upgrades may be needed for homes over 20 years old. For more information, see Fact Sheets at EVchoice.com.au or articles in Renew magazine (edition 143 for EVSE wiring, edition 156 for EVSE buyer's guide).
