Getting Started
This guide provides instructions for setting up and using your Alcatel XL685 Voice cordless phone.
1. Connecting the Base
(Refer to Figure 1: Diagram showing the base station with power and phone line connections)
- Connect the two cables to the corresponding sockets at the bottom of the base station.
- Connect the telephone line cable to your router or wall socket.
- Plug the power cable into a power outlet.
Caution: Always use the power cable supplied with the device.
Note: To reduce electrical waste, it is recommended to reuse the telecom plug from your previous device if available.
2. Installing Handsets and Charging Batteries
(Refer to Figure 4: Diagram showing handset battery installation)
- Slide the battery compartment cover downwards to open it.
- Insert the 2 included rechargeable batteries as indicated, paying close attention to polarity.
- Slide the battery compartment cover back to close it.
- Place the handset on the base station or charger and charge for 15 hours before first use. The handset will beep when correctly placed.
Always use the rechargeable batteries provided in the box.
3. Initial Setup
After the first power-on, a welcome message will appear on the screen. Follow the on-screen prompts:
- Select Your Country: Choose your country from the list.
- Set Date: Enter the date in MM-DD-YY or DD-MM-YY format.
- Set Time: Choose between 12-hour or 24-hour format and set the current time.
4. Handset Description and Features

Keypad Functions:
- 1. Menu/OK: Access submenus, confirm options.
- 2. Call/Speakerphone: Make or answer a call. During a call, press to toggle speakerphone mode.
- 3. End Call/Exit: End a call or exit the current menu.
- 4. Phonebook/Scroll Up/Volume Up: Access the phonebook, scroll up through menu items, or increase volume.
- 5. Scroll Down/Volume Down: Scroll down through menu items or decrease volume during a call.
- 6. Call Block/Cancel: In standby, access the Call Block menu. When ringing, reject the call. Also used to cancel or go back in menus.
- 7. Speed Dial: Dial numbers stored in Speed Dial memory.
- 8. Call List: Press and hold to access the Call List.
- 9. Redial List: Press and hold to access the Redial List.
- 10. Flash (R): Press and hold to insert a Flash function.
- 11. Indicator Light: Solid = Audio Boost ON; Fast blink = Incoming call or handset paging; Slow blink = New message.
- 12. Audio Boost: Activate/deactivate audio boost in the earpiece to increase volume.
Display Icons:
- ? Call Block active.
- ? Handset registered and within base range.
- ? Handsfree mode active.
- ? Alarm set (solid light).
- ? Alarm ringing (flashing light).
- ? New voicemail received*.
- ? Ringer is off.
- ? Battery charge level indicator.
- ? Low battery (flashing).
- ? New missed call in Call List*.
- ? Answering Machine is ON.
- ? Accessing Redial List (flashing).
- ? Accessing Phonebook (flashing).
*Subject to service availability and subscription with your network operator.
5. Base Station Description and Features

Answering Machine Keys:
- [TAM ON/OFF]: Turn the answering machine on or off.
- [Play]: Play messages.
- [Stop]: Stop message playback.
- [Volume Up]: Increase speaker volume during message playback.
- [Volume Down]: Decrease speaker volume during message playback.
- [Skip]: Skip the current message and play the next.
- [Repeat]: Repeat the current message from the beginning.
- [Previous]: Press twice to go to the previous message.
- [Delete Current]: Delete the currently playing message.
- [Delete All Read]: Press and hold to delete all listened messages.
New voice messages will not be deleted by 'Delete All Read'.
Indicator Lights:
- Solid ON: Answering Machine is ON.
- Solid OFF: Answering Machine is OFF.
- Blinking: New voice messages received.
6. Handset Paging and Registration
Paging (Finding the Handset):
Press the paging button located under the base station (Fig. 1-C). The handset will ring for 60 seconds. Press any key on the handset to stop the ringing.
Registering a Handset:
If the link between the base and handset is lost, or if you want to pair an additional handset:
- On the base station, press and hold the registration button for approximately 8 seconds.
- On the handset, navigate to `Handset Settings` > `Registration`.
- When prompted for PIN?, enter the default PIN: 0000.
7. Phone Settings
Personalize your phone according to your preferences:
- Handset Settings: Access `Handset Settings` to configure ringtone, alert tones, contrast, equalizer, language, date & time, handset name, auto-answer, etc.
- Base Settings: Access `Base Settings` to configure ringtone, flash time, change PIN, delete handsets, etc.
If you wish to select a language different from the country's default, refer to the language translation tables provided in the original manual.
8. Alarm Settings
- Set Alarm ON/OFF.
- Set Alarm Time (HH:MM).
- Set Recurrence (Once/Daily).
- Snooze function available.
9. Phonebook and Speed Dial
Saving a Contact:
- Access the Phonebook, then select `Add New`.
- Enter the contact's name and phone number.
- You can assign a VIP status and a specific ringtone to contacts. VIP contacts are marked with a special symbol.
- Maximum of 100 contacts can be stored.
Calling from Phonebook:
- Access the Phonebook, select the desired entry, and dial.
Saving Speed Dial Entries:
- Access `Direct Memory`.
- Select a memory location (M1, M2, Key 1, Key 2, or Key 3).
- Enter the contact's name (optional) and phone number.
Dialing Speed Dial Numbers:
- For M1/M2: Press the key to dial.
- For Key 1/2/3: Press and hold the key to dial.
10. Making and Receiving Calls
- Make a Call: Press the call button before or after dialing a number.
- End a Call: Press the end call button.
- Answer a Call: Lift the handset and press the call button. Press the call button again for speakerphone. Use volume keys to adjust sound level.
- Internal Calls: Use the `Intercom` function to call other registered handsets.
11. Call Lists
- Call List: The phone stores details of the last 50 received calls. Access by holding the call button. Missed calls are indicated.
- Redial List: Each handset stores the last 20 dialed numbers. Access by holding the redial button and scrolling through the list.
12. Answering Machine Features
Answering Machine Settings (via Handset):
- Turn the answering machine ON/OFF.
- Set Answer Delay (2-10 rings).
- Set Answering Mode: `Record & Announce` or `Announce Only`.
- Set Outgoing Message Language.
- Record a Custom Announcement.
Remote Access:
Call your home phone number. While the greeting message plays, enter your remote access PIN (default: 0000) to access messages.
13. Call Blocking
This feature helps you avoid unwanted calls.
- Blocking Calls Individually: When the phone rings, press the reject/block button to end the call and get an option to add the number to the block list. Confirm to add.
- Adding Numbers to Block List: Access `Blocked Numbers` > `Add New` and enter the number, or add from the Call List.
- Deleting Numbers from Block List: Access `Blocked Numbers`, select the number, and choose to delete it.
- Automatic Blocking Modes:
- Allow Contacts Only: Only calls from contacts in your phonebook (normal and VIP) will ring.
- Allow VIP Only: Only calls from VIP contacts in your phonebook will ring.
- Turn Off Blocking: Disables the call blocking feature.
- Block Anonymous/Private Calls: Option to block calls with hidden or private numbers.
When call blocking is OFF, the block keys can still be used to reject calls and add numbers to the list, but they won't be automatically blocked unless the feature is reactivated.
14. Troubleshooting
If you encounter a problem:
- Remove batteries from all handsets for about 1 minute.
- Disconnect the base station from the power outlet, then reconnect it.
- Reinsert the batteries into the handsets.

15. Safety Information
- This phone is not designed for emergency calls during power outages.
- Do not use to report gas leaks or explosion risks.
- Do not open the device or power supply to avoid electric shock.
- Do not attempt to open batteries, as they contain hazardous chemicals.
- Place the phone in a dry location, away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.
- Keep the phone at least 1 meter away from other electrical devices to avoid radio signal interference.
16. Environmental Information
This symbol (♻️) indicates that your end-of-life electronic device must be collected separately and not disposed of with household waste. Local authorities have systems for collection and recycling.
