2. Settings and Alarms
Powering On/Off: The electric unicycle is switched on and off using the ON/OFF button. When powering on, hold the wheel in the upright position.
WARNING: Tilting the unicycle forwards or backwards will cause the wheel to move accordingly, keeping the pedals horizontal. The wheel does not self-balance sideways.
Transport Mode
The unicycle is shipped in transport mode. To activate riding position:
- Switch the unicycle ON using the ON/OFF button.
- Hold down the engine stop button and press the ON/OFF button 5 times.
- Switch the unicycle OFF and then ON again. The wheel is now in riding position.
The same procedure can be used to return the unicycle to transport mode.
Motor Cut-off
The motor cut-off button can be used to switch off the motor, for example, when lifting the wheel. The unicycle has an automatic wheel stop if tilted sideways by more than 35 degrees, facilitating parking on its side.
Smartphone App
The Begode app is available on the App Store and Google Play store, or at www.begode.com/app. Alternative apps include DarknessBot (iOS) and EUCWorld (Android).
Calibration
The neutral balance position of the pedals can be calibrated using the smartphone app. Hold the wheel pedal horizontally in a forward/reverse direction or at a desired inclination angle. New unicycles are pre-calibrated. NOTE: During calibration, the wheel must be vertical laterally; otherwise, unwanted pedal lift or lowering may occur during turns.
Software Updates
Begode regularly updates firmware. New software can be downloaded from the official after-sales service (voltride.com) or via the smartphone app. Keeping the software up-to-date is advisable.
Settings
The smartphone app allows adjustment of pedal "stiffness":
- Soft: Pedals tilt more, wheel reacts slower.
- Hard: Wheel reacts more sharply, suitable for steeper inclines.
- Medium: An intermediate position.
Other settings and adjustments include:
- Tire Pressure: Recommended pressure is 1.5 to 3.2 atm, adjustable based on rider weight, style, and terrain. Higher pressure improves rolling and range but makes the wheel stiffer.
- Shock Absorber: For models with shock absorbers, adjust travel, softness, and damping.
- Accessories: Lightweight Hexa pedals and mudguards are available as optional extras. Aftermarket support cushions, pedals, and body protectors can also be fitted.
- Tires: The unicycle can be fitted with tires suitable for asphalt or off-road riding. Tire replacement is recommended to be done by an official workshop due to complexity.
- Bluetooth Speakers: Can be connected to a smartphone.
Alarms
The unicycle provides audio alerts:
- Speed Alarms: 2 or 3 beeps, configurable in the app based on set speed.
- 80% Peak Power: 5 beeps.
- Speed Limiting (Battery Depletion): Wheel pushes up on the front of pedals, beeps vary with battery level:
- Up to 14.4 km/h: 3 beeps per 2 seconds.
- Up to 7.2 km/h: 2 beeps per 2 seconds.
- Below 7.2 km/h: 2 beeps per second.
Rider must not attempt to push pedals to horizontal position, as this can cause the wheel to lock up and result in a fall.
- Battery Low: 5 beeps, 1 beep per second. Avoid running the battery this low due to increased risk of falling and battery damage.
- Controller Overheated: 2 short beeps. Triggered at 80°C, causing the wheel to push up on the pedals. Rider must react immediately by reducing speed or aborting. Can also occur when braking on a descent with a fully charged battery.
- Overvoltage: 3 beeps per 2 seconds. A dangerous alarm warning the rider to slow down immediately to maintain balance.
- Sideways Wheel Spin: 5 beeps. If the wheel does not balance immediately after being lifted, switch it off and on again.
Alarms can be customized in the smartphone app.
3. How to Ride an Electric Unicycle
Learning to ride an electric unicycle typically takes between 5 minutes and a few days, depending on the individual. It is similar to learning to ride a bicycle.
Recommendation: Take basic training from the dealer or an experienced rider. A video guide is available by scanning the QR code: https://youtu.be/t6o8ZMlo5ko
Essential Safety Gear: ALWAYS wear a helmet, arm, knee, and elbow protectors, and ankle boots. A helmet with chin protection, protective clothing (motorcycle jacket/trousers) with back protection is highly recommended.
Direction Signals: Signal turns by hand. A straight right hand for a right turn, a straight left hand for a left turn. The brake light illuminates when braking; raising the right hand can also signal braking. Be aware of your surroundings, including what is behind you. A rear-view mirror or helmet-mounted mirror can be helpful.
Visibility: In dark or low-visibility conditions, ensure your unicycle's lights are working and you are clearly visible. Consider attaching additional front and rear lights to your helmet and wearing reflective clothing or a vest.
Practice Area: Before riding on public roads, practice in a safe, open area. Use an instructor if needed. Ensure you can react to unexpected situations by braking or swerving.
WARNING: Abrupt braking or braking in a bend can lead to loss of control and serious injury.
Always ensure your path is safe and ride at a speed appropriate to the conditions. Braking distances increase in wet conditions.
Traffic Laws: Understand and obey all applicable laws, rules, and restrictions for unicyclists. Do not ride on roads unless expressly permitted. If riding on pavements, do not obstruct pedestrians and adhere to speed limits.
Liability: The manufacturer, importer, and distributor are not liable for accidents or consequences arising from the use of the electric unicycle, including technical failures. The user is responsible for choosing a riding style that minimizes injury and damage in case of unexpected failure.
4. Charging
To charge the unicycle:
- Turn the unicycle OFF.
- Plug the charger into the wall outlet first.
- Connect the charger to the unicycle's charging port.
Charging from 0% to 100% takes approximately 6 hours with the standard charger, or about half that time with two chargers.
It is recommended to charge the unicycle at room temperature.
WARNING: DO NOT charge the scooter if the charging port or power cord is wet. DO NOT charge or use the battery if it is damaged or shows signs of water contact. Always replace the charging port cover after charging.
Diagram Description: Shows the charging ports located under the trolley handle.
5. Serial Number
Each Begode electric unicycle has a unique serial number, essential for identification, support, and potential insurance. The serial number can be found on the rim of the unicycle's motor or viewed within the companion smartphone app.
Keep the serial number saved for future reference.
Diagram Description: Illustrates the potential location of the serial number on the unicycle's motor rim.
6. Maintenance
Regularly check tire condition and pressure. Recommended pressure is 1.5-3.2 bar, adjustable based on rider weight, style, and tire type. Riding with low pressure can cause punctures or rim damage. DO NOT ride if the tire is damaged or does not hold air.
Ensure the unicycle's shell and components remain tightly secured, especially after impacts. Check for cracks in the casing where dust and moisture could cause damage. If found, the wheel requires immediate servicing and repair.
Electric unicycles require less maintenance than electric scooters as they lack components like handlebars or folding mechanisms. However, sensitive areas still need regular inspection.
Warranty Maintenance Intervals:
- 1) 300 km after purchase.
- 2) Every 1000 km or at least once a year for regular maintenance.
Maintenance is performed by the official partner, Voltride Service (voltride.com).
Cleaning
Use a damp, soft cloth to clean the unicycle. Use a brush for stubborn dirt. DO NOT use alcohol, solvents, or a pressure washer. DO NOT immerse the unicycle in water, as it is not waterproof and water damage voids the warranty.
Storage
Switch off the unicycle and disconnect the charger. Store with the battery charged to approximately 50-60%. Check battery level every two months and recharge if necessary. Store in a dry room at 15-25°C.
WARNING: Like any mechanical component, electric unicycles are subject to stress and wear. Components age differently. If a component's expected service life is exceeded, it may fail unexpectedly, causing injury. Cracks, scratches, and discoloration indicate high stress and potential need for replacement. Regular maintenance checks for these defects, and users should also monitor for them.
