Introduction

The PowerSafe® SBS® XC+ range from EnerSys represents their premier Thin Plate Pure Plate (TPPL) solution for demanding cyclic applications. These valve-regulated lead-acid cells and monoblocs are engineered for off-grid hybrid, unreliable grid, and renewable energy systems. Unlike conventional VRLA AGM technology, the PowerSafe SBS XC+ series integrates advanced carbon chemistry with proven TPPL technology, a robust EnerSys solution successfully deployed across various applications.

Applications & Advantages

In regions with unreliable grid power, telecom networks often depend on diesel generators. The PowerSafe SBS XC+ batteries address the challenges of off-grid telecom power by offering superior energy throughput and cyclic performance for extended battery life. Their ability to operate in controlled partial state of charge (PSoC) conditions reduces generator runtime, leading to significant operational expenditure (OPEX) savings through lower fuel consumption and reduced generator maintenance. Furthermore, these batteries help avoid generator replacement and contribute to a reduction in CO2 emissions and noise pollution.

The fast recharge capability, high cyclic performance, and resilience against deep discharge make the PowerSafe SBS XC+ series ideal for renewable energy applications and unreliable grid environments where uncontrolled partial state of charge operation is a risk. The overall performance and reliability deliver a competitive TCO through fewer battery replacements and lower operating costs throughout the network infrastructure's lifecycle.

Construction

  • Positive plates feature pure lead grids manufactured using a unique process.
  • Negative plates are designed for perfect balance with positive plates, ensuring optimum recombination efficiency, enhanced by advanced carbon for improved energy throughput in cyclic applications.
  • Separators are made from superior quality microporous glass mat, offering high absorption and stability.
  • Containers and lids are constructed from UL94 V-0 rated flame-retardant material, providing high resistance to shock and vibration.
  • Electrolyte is high-grade dilute sulphuric acid absorbed into the separator material.
  • Terminal design ensures a proven, high-integrity, leak-resistant seal.
  • Self-regulating pressure relief valves are incorporated to prevent the ingress of atmospheric oxygen.
  • Flame arrestors are built into each bloc/cell for increased operational safety.

Installation & Operation

PowerSafe® SBS® XC+ blocs and cells are designed for installation in cabinets or on stands, located close to the point of use, eliminating the need for a separate battery room. Products can be mounted in any orientation, except inverted. For 12V blocs, installation on their base is recommended; consult EnerSys for other orientations. For 2V cells in cyclic applications, horizontal orientation is recommended.

Voltage Settings

  • Float voltage: 2.29Vpc @ 20°C - 2.27Vpc @ 25°C.
  • Fast charge voltage: 2.40Vpc @ 20°C - 2.38Vpc @ 25°C.

Storage Life

Up to 24 months at 20°C / 12 months at 30°C.

Operating Temperature

Wide operating temperature range: -40°C to +50°C.

Maintenance

Low maintenance: no water addition required.

Standards Compliance

  • Designed to comply with international standards IEC 60896-21/22 and IEC 61427-1.
  • Classified as "Very Long Life" (> 12 years) according to the Eurobat guide.
  • UL recognised component.
  • Installation must comply with IEC 62485-2 standard and local/national regulations.
  • Classified as a non-spillable battery and approved as non-hazardous cargo for land, sea, and air transportation in accordance with ADR / RID, IMDG, and IATA regulations.
  • Management systems for product manufacture are ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 certified.
