Sonos Home Sound System User Guide

Introduction to Sonos

Sonos is a wireless home sound system designed to fill your home with music, movies, and TV audio. It allows you to listen in any room or every room simultaneously, offering flexibility to play different content in each space or the same music everywhere. The system is controlled via the free Sonos app, providing easy access to music services, podcasts, internet radio, and personal libraries. Products can be mixed and matched to build a personalized home sound system.

Getting Started

To set up your Sonos system, you will need:

  • WiFi Network: Have your network name and password ready.
  • Mobile Device: A smartphone or tablet connected to the same WiFi network, used for setup and control.
  • Sonos App: Download the Sonos S2 app (or S1 for older systems) from your device's app store.
  • Sonos Account: Create an account during setup, which is used to manage and expand your system.

Setup typically involves connecting a Sonos product to your home WiFi. For homes with slow or unreliable WiFi, a wired connection to your router can create a dedicated network for Sonos products. Ensure your mobile device and Sonos products are on the same WiFi network during setup.

Sonos Move

Rooms and Grouping

Sonos allows you to play music in individual rooms or group multiple Sonos products together to play the same music simultaneously. You can also send TV sound from a home theater speaker to other rooms. The Sonos app displays what's playing in each room and allows you to control playback by selecting rooms or content sources like Browse, Search, or My Sonos.

Grouping: Select multiple rooms to play the same music everywhere. Saved groups can be easily recalled. Press and hold the [Play/Pause] button on a speaker to add its current audio to another room.

Sonos Home Theater

Sonos products can create a full home theater experience. Enhance your setup by adding a Sub for deeper bass and a pair of rear surround speakers (Sonos One, One SL, Five, or compatible third-party speakers with Amp) for 5.1 surround sound.

Surround Settings:

  • Surrounds: Turn surround sound On or Off.
  • TV Level: Adjust surround volume for TV audio.
  • Music Level: Adjust surround volume for music.
  • Music Playback: Choose between Ambient (subtle) or Full (louder) for music playback.

Home Theater Settings:

  • TV Dialog Sync: Adjusts audio delay for lip-sync correction.
  • Group Audio Delay: Manages audio sync issues when playing to grouped speakers.
  • TV Autoplay: Automatically switches audio to TV when the TV is turned on.
  • Ungroup on Autoplay: Automatically drops the home theater speaker from groups when TV Autoplay is active.
  • Speech Enhancement: Makes TV dialogue clearer.
  • Night Sound: Reduces loud sounds and enhances quiet ones for balanced listening.
  • Remote Control Setup: Program your TV remote to control Sonos volume.

Playing Music

Music can be played on Sonos through several methods:

  • Sonos App: The primary control interface for browsing music services, radio, podcasts, and personal libraries.
  • Voice Commands: Use Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri (via AirPlay 2) with compatible Sonos speakers.
  • Speaker Controls: Use touch controls on the speakers for volume, playback, and track skipping.
  • Third-Party Apps: Control Sonos directly from apps like Spotify, Pandora, or Pocket Casts.
  • AirPlay 2: Stream audio directly from Apple devices.

Music Sources: Sonos Radio (free internet radio), music services (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.), music stored on mobile devices or computers, imported playlists, and other audio devices via line-in.

Volume Control

Volume can be adjusted using the speaker's touch controls, the Sonos app (for individual speakers or groups), or voice commands with enabled voice services. Hardware volume control can be enabled in settings to use mobile device buttons.

Voice Services

Sonos integrates with popular voice assistants:

  • Amazon Alexa: Requires Sonos app and Alexa app with Sonos skill enabled.
  • Google Assistant: Requires Sonos app and Google Assistant app.
  • Siri: Via AirPlay 2-compatible Sonos speakers using the Apple Home app (primarily for Apple Music).

Note: Voice control availability varies by country.

Alarms and Sleep Timer

Set alarms to wake up to music, radio stations, or playlists. A sleep timer allows Sonos to automatically turn off after a set period, perfect for falling asleep to music.

System Updates & Network Changes

Sonos regularly releases software updates to add features and improve performance. Automatic updates can be enabled. If your WiFi router or password changes, the Sonos app will guide you through updating your network information.

Product Settings & Customization

Within the Sonos app, you can customize various product settings:

  • Room Name: Rename speakers for easier identification.
  • Turn off WiFi: Reduce power consumption on wired products.
  • EQ Settings: Adjust bass, treble, balance, and loudness.
  • Trueplay Tuning: Optimizes sound for room acoustics (requires iOS device). Auto Trueplay available for portable products.
  • Volume Limit: Set a maximum volume for specific rooms.
  • Status Light: Turn off the status indicator light if distracting.
  • Touch Controls: Disable speaker touch controls to prevent accidental adjustments.
  • Battery Saver: For portable products, set to power off automatically.
  • Line-In Settings: Configure source name, level, audio delay, and autoplay for connected devices.

General Safety Information

Always read and follow safety instructions. Clean products with a dry cloth only. Avoid blocking ventilation openings and installing near heat sources. Protect power cables from damage. Refer servicing to qualified Sonos personnel. Do not expose apparatus to water or moisture.
